So last week I played a game where my opponent was being distracted throughout the game by other people. As he was only paying attention during his turn, he wasn't watching a lot of my rolls, and even when I had someone else "watch my rolls" he still said I had to reroll my rolls cause he didn't watch.*

So, my poll is basically a way to find out how much this happens to you, and how much you hate it.

IMPORTANT: THE FIRST 5 OPTIONS ARE FREQUENCY, NEXT 10 ARE HATE NUMBERS ON A SCALE OF 1 TO 10.

*For the record , I got him back. My.mum called to see where I was going on Monday, while he rolled all 5s for his Plasma Spam Command Squad against my 3 Tacticals, my last Troops. I was at the other end.of the room and he didn't even get someone to watch to verify. Rerolled and got a single 2 to hit and 3 Gets Hots, all of which killed.a model, even with Aopthecary's FNP. I love Karma.

Over my way its kind of a house rule. Either waste time waiting on him, or reroll your dice. Especially bad when yiu get a gokd or even game changing roll. That's what the person watches for.

I have had people text a little bit during game, or get distracted, but very, very rarely is it anything major. I often go check out other games real quick during my opponents movement phase, even in tournaments. But I think if its slowing down the game you should say something.

I don't mind a guy having a quick bit of banter with someone else, as that sort of friendly ribbing happens all the time in game clubs. I used to play against a guy who would be known to walk away if he wasn't tethered to the table, and even during his turn I had to remind him what his own stuff did. It's pretty rare though, wargaming requires a bit of an attention span and people who've been into that sort of hobby longer tend to stay on task.

If someone can't be bothered to pay attention during your turn, then move his models around when he isn't looking. Don't try to pretend that you didn't move them if he calls you on it (that would be cheating). But if he can't show you the common courtesy of paying attention to the game he's playing with you, try for any advantage you can.

I haven't had too many people not watch me roll dice, I tend to make a point of doing it so they can see, but I have no problem with people forgetting to move troops or shoot. That's just poor generalship to me and I cheerfully exploit it!

I generally dislike it, since I don't like interrupting people and am therefore left to wait, dice in hand, to make my rolls.

I get distracted too (I don't seek distractions, though) but I can multi-task, and tend to listen to whomever is talking to me whilst watching the table and listening to my opponent too. Not many people trust this, however, so I find myself having to tell them they can roll more often than not, but that involves cutting off the person talking to me; either way I appear rude, though, so I generally try and incorporate what is said to me into my reply to show that I listened.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

This doesn't happen real often to me at all except for trips to the bathroom or something, which is totally understandable.

Our house rule is that (generally, unless it's a game changing roll or something) if one player is absent, the other player can continue with his turn as long as he's supervised and vouched for by someone else in the LGS. Some guys are really trusting and will let you just continue on without supervision. Cheating is not common here at all.

While I play in my own house, with my friends, I can see where someone is coming from. If you really aren't feeling a game, you simply won't pay attention because that "yeah, let's play some 40k!" feeling has now severely diminished by turn 4.

However, it seems like this guy was just a mook. Snap at him. No one likes being snapped at, and if he gets mad at you, the game ends all the sooner and you can find someone else to play with.

I take a lot of time to paint my models and make an army list. Plus, I rarely get out to play, so whem I do, I want it to not piss me off. Texters, visitong buddies, iPods, etc turn me into the crusty old bastard that gets frustrated quickly and becomes a rules nazi...

Long and short of it: be respectful of your opponents. Friends and texts will still be around after the game...

(NOTE: I've never played)

Could you, upfront, agree to a house rule that if you make the other person wait (without it being something reasonable, like a bathroom break), the waiting player gets some sort of mechanical advantage? Being new I'm not sure what bonus or broken thing to suggest, but I was sorta inspired by squidhills suggestion that you move your opponents units while they're away - except without the sneakiness. Instead, you BOTH agree up front to wait for eachother to do the rolls, but if you make the other wait, you suffer some form of 'cheating.' And then specify the 'cheating' and whatever exceptions to the rule you wish (bathroom breaks, important calls, etc).

I sorta like this because it sets up clearly at the start that the gameplay should be brisk (or as brisk as possible) and respectful. Sometimes all you need to do is remind people that it's important to be respectful and do it in a fun and fair way that everyone agrees to at the outset.

I find that when people have expectations that they don't articulate, this can lead to frustration if these expectations aren't met. Articulating expectations up front - before the frustrations arise - is usually a good time to do it.

It doesn't happen that often, but when it does it's annoying...however, I've been there before. Once, I had a girlfriend was over for "game night" at my apartment, and I was barely paying attention I had to have my friend repeat himself a lot ...I've never made people re-roll dice, though; that's just silly.

And if you're drinkin' well, you know that you're my friend and I say "I think I'll have myself a beer"

Spectators need to offer that respect to players too... Only time I comment or say something to a person playing is in between turns.

When I'm playing with a distracted opponent , I just speak louder while declaring what I'm doing and roll my dice... If he can't be bothered to pay attention to what I'm doing at that point , tough s**t, I'm not rerolling my dice for him
