Was wondering if there is a good base colour to apply for putting on shinning gold on the trim of my CSM

I usually use either scorched brown ( charred brown from Vallejo as an alternative) or bestial brown, depending on how dark i want the undertone to be.

I use heavybolter's method for some stuff, other stuff I paint gold, wash with sepia, then layer w/gold and highlight with a 50/50 mix gold and silver.

I've had pretty good success with bestial brown, then i dry brush gold for a weathered look, or paint it on in layers for a shiny new gold look.

Chaos black with Gold drybrushed over top. It gives it a nice faded/weathered look

I've found that bronze works really well as a basecoat for gold.

Tin bitz works (worked??) really well over black.

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

I also use a bronze or copper base to get some shiny yellow-like base colourage before doing a couple of smooth layers of shinier gold.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

I like to use a base of calthan brown foundation paint then mix burnished gold/snakebite leather and layer this over, followed by pure gold, then a wash of devlan mud and a re highlight of gold, if i want a brighter point of reflection i add a small amount of mithril silver to gold and highlight.

good luck with it all!

Back in the English morass

I use Vallejo English Unifrom, then brazen brass and then shining gold finished with a watered down wash of Ogryn flesh.

Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

Used to start with Tin Bitz over black whch then the gold was applied.

However I now use Bestial Brown followed by the gold.

For my Black Consuls, I used black primer, Calthan Brown then shining gold. It worked quite well.

I would use a 50/50 mix of Shining Gold and Scorched Brown. With the new colour range released, they sell this straight from the pot. It's called .. bugger, I've misplaced my pot it seems.. I'll edit this when I find it with the name >.<

Since I don't use Citadel colors, the universals would be:

1. Basecoat with sepia
2. Layer of copper
3. dry brush with golden
