Subject: Large Bang Heard Over Much Of Southern England
So about an hour ago my house shook and I heard a very loud bang, five minutes later my facebook erupted with people commenting on it and now this pops up.
I've heard sonic booms before, and they will certainly rattle your windows and shake your house. Fighter pilots flying too close to civilian areas will do that from time to time.
Maybe it was a meteor? Or the coyote trying to drop a piano on the road runner's head?

Most likely a sonic boom from a fighter jet or something. I have heard the space shuttles sonic boom may times when it was coming in for landing at cape Canaveral. It's a loud bang just as you described.

According to my mate (who works on the squadron) it was a Typhoon scrambling as part of a readiness exercise for the Olympics.

What sort of emergency does a helicopter let off that means that they scramble Typhoons to intercept?
If the helicopter were forced to come down in water, you would want to get eyes on it as quickly as possible to improve chances of rescue.
Or if the helicopter were entering controlled airspace without getting clearance, you would want to make sure it isn't up to anything malicious, which is what it sounded like here.
It said the aircraft were already on their way to the helicopter by the time the helicopter pilot realised he was transmitting on the wrong frequency and switched to the correct one.
It's standard procedure, though typically the "escorts" will intercept below the speed of sound. This was probably just a pilot error.

I didn't want to be the one to say it, but you would scramble fighters to shoot something down rather than organise a rescue. But they certainly could be used to spot a crash in water too which is a more innocent reason.

I'm guessing the typhoon is just going to blow the helicopter out of the air and take some nice pretty aerial photographs.

What exactly is a Typhoon going to accomplish if say there is a Mumbai style attack in London?
TERRORISTS IN THE CAPITAL? QUICKLY! BOMB EVERYTHING!
It might not do too much in terms of actually preventing the attack...but it would likely make people feel a whole hell of a lot safer seeing that the military's out in force.

With all that money we are spending I hope the various terrorists organisations make the most of it. Wouldn't want it all going to waste now would we...
Also, that seems quite high. Are some security operations being privatised? Or is that just the logistical cost of moving police and army personnel?
