Twisted Trueborn with Blaster

Hi there! I bought a box of deathmarks the day after the FAQ hit as the 2+ AP1 flamer made me cackle with delight. I want this list to be competitive and very annoying to play against, while avoiding typical necron list types.
HQ (royal courts split into the units they are deployed with)
Overlord with MSS, ResOrb, SempWeave, Phaeron, Warscythe
Overlord with MSS, ResOrb, SempWeave, Phaeron, Warscythe
Elites
5x Deathmarks, 1 Stormtek with Lightning Field, 1 Despairtek with Veil (1 O-Lord goes here)
Triarch Stalker
Triarch Stalker
Troops
14 warriors, 1 Destrotek with Gaze, 1 Stormtek with Lightning Field (other O-Lord goes here)
5 warriors in a Ghost Ark, 1 Destrotek with Pulse
5 warriors in a Ghost Ark, 1 Destrotek with Pulse
Fast Attack
NOTHING!
Heavy
Monolith
AnniBarge w/ gauss
AnniBarge w/ gauss
Strategy:
Big blob is scary and hard to assault and is backed up by 2 ghost arks feeding dead warriors back into it. Stalkers nom up vehicles and barges pew pew infantry/vehicles/whatever needs deadification. Monolith is threatening, and possibly will deep strike depending on terrain/deployment/dice gods. Deathmarks in reserve are stupid evil and deep strike in with the full fury of 10 rapid fire relentless sniper shots, the flamer and 4 staff shots.
All of my visible infantry are not fun to assault. The blob has defensive 'nades and both groups have MSS lords and lightning. I know my deathmark team is overcosted, but they kill anything that needs killed and I have had them charged by assault terminators and win.
Here's what I'm looking for help with: I have 38 points left. What do I spend it on/what do I drop and add to make this more competitive? I have all the models except for the stalkers, 1 cryptek and a ghost ark.
Thoughts? Be as harsh as you want to. I am trying to create a creative list that deviates from the scarab/wraith/tremor trends that can be competitive and funs as hell to play.

I'd been hoping someone would make a list that would abuse the "Death & Despair" combo!
Regarding the list in general, it seems like your Overlords are a little heavy.
Actually, if you replace one of them with Zandrekh (then you can drop the extra ResOrb) and put them both in the same unit with the big block of Warriors, that would make for an interesting tactical combination.
(besides, can you even have anyone else deep strike in with your Deathmarks? I thought, according to the FAQ, the only things that could deep strike were models that had the deep strike special rule? (eg. Destroyer Lords). I seem to recall there being some massive debate about whether a Harbinger of Despair could even enter the field via deep strike with its Veil of Darkness)
If you want to make this particularly cheesy, though, one suggestion: replace the two Stalkers with a second Deathmark unit of 5 + DespairTek (aka. D&D squad) and a C'tan Shard with Grand Illusion.
Why?
Well, Hunters From Hyperspace (HFH) will only work on the one enemy unit that has been marked, right?
With only one D&D squad, you only get to use that 2+ wound AP1 flamer trick against one target. Once the marked target has been removed, the D&D squad just goes back to being a regular Deathmark unit with a Cryptek in it (not bad, per se, just not amazing anymore).
A second D&D squad means a second HFH marked enemy unit (remember: every Deathmark unit can benefit from any other Deathmark unit's HFH marker). That way, not only can you easily (hopefully) take out two units, but if something happens to one of your D&D squads, you've still got the other to fall back on.
Now for the cheese supreme: Grand Illusion.
This C'tan power lets you essentially "redeploy" some of you units after normal deployment. One of the things this lets you do is stick units that have been deployed on the field back into reserve.
The combo?
1- Deploy 2 D&D squads like normal (place HFH markers on 2 enemy units when deploying).
2- Activate Grand Illusion power, place D&D squad(s) into reserve.
3- have D&D squads come back on to field from reserves later in game (as soon as they re-enter play, their HFH rule activates... allowing you to place MORE HFH markers!).
Using this exploit, you can mark 3-4 enemy units... do you think many armies can hold up against losing 3 or 4 of their best units to a S8 AP1 flamer that wounds on a 2+?
(the only thing to keep in mind is, you'll probably need to have the Harbingers of Despair carry Veils of Darkness, just so they'll be able to get around to all the different marked enemy units)
Regardless, your list concept has me intrigued. I may see if I can come up with something along these lines...

(useing 1 hand so not going to bother with spell errors because arm is numb )

I like the zahndrekh idea.. but dropping the overlord out of the deathmarks is a death sentence when they get shot up and assaulted. Res orb makes them damn hard to kill and charging them means getting mindshackled, d6 s8 hits, 2 s7 power wep attacks. That makes the team of five suiciders awfully ugly.
As long as the despairtek has a veil, the FAQ allows for deepstrike from reserve.
RAW allows for the grand illusion/hfh trick. They are deployed and redeployed again from reserve, allowing for multiple marks. However, many opponents will either reserve their armies to avoid marks... and technically if you deploy first' there is nothing to mark. Too much risk to dump points into a c'tan imo (though i love the model).
4 multimelta shots are hard to give up for more risk and kamikaze units for me... and stalkers offer more stupid strong av13.

Made a 2000 point list using this concept (3 D&D SQUADS!)
...
but I'm 55 points over.
(considering dropping the Monolith or the A.Barges and using the points to get some Tomb Blades)

Monoliths are no good anymore. I'd dump it for another annihilation barge and use the extra 110 pts to fill up the ground crew warrior squad.
The bigger problem with the list is that it does not have enough AT. If you face anything but light transports, you will have very hard time doing any real damage. This is especially true if you dump one of the stalkers for a second unit of snipers. Even with two stalkers and some lanceteks, you just don't have enough to crack armor. The annihilation barges are only good against AV10-11.

So your whole list revolves around one easily defeatable combo?
Large warrior blobs are good stuff, but a lightning tek won't really increase their survivability any. I'd recommend a normal MSS/Scythe lord tucked into the unit over a tek; this will give you 2 scarabs, lots of scythe swings, and a greater chance of winning or tying combat. Def grenades are OK.
Overall I feel the Lith isn't needed, Stalkers won't get much out of this list (as they combined with your two destro teks are your only ranged AT). I just think its definitely missing... something, but I can't put my finger on it.

I agree the lith is nothing special... but i luffs it so much it's gonna stay.
I honestly haven't had a hard time with armor in the games i have played but i would love some suggestions on how to get some more antitank in the list!

Hiya, I've been experimenting with a list with a few similarities in some pick up games recently. Generally the following.
2000 pts;
Imotekh the Stormlord.
Illuminor Szeras.
5 Deathmarks, Despair Tek with Veil
19 Warriors, Lord, Scythe, MSS, Res Orb.
5 Warriors, Lord, Scythe, MSS
- Ghost Ark
5 Warriors, Lord, Scythe, MSS
- Ghost Ark
5 Scarabs
5 Scarabs
5 Destroyers
Monolith
Tomb Spyder, Fabricator Claw, Gloom Prism.
Tomb Spyder, Fabricator Claw, Gloom Prism.
My experience so far;
- Imotekh hasn't been very impressive. Generally his Lightning is a bust and the Night fight is dropping Turn 2. I can see him having more impact if the law of averages starts asserting itself though.
- Szeras has been great value, I've ended up using each augment at least once in various games, whichever one you get is a huge boon. On top of that he gives the defensive grenades without taking away the slot for the Lord in the big squad, so effectively giving them the benefit of a double royal court.
- The 'Death and Despair' squad, when it arrived timely, worked a treat. Had problems other times with the getting them on too late when I needed them earlier though, again 'meh' rolls. For just 155 points, a nice ace up the sleeve, love em.
- The Monolith has been essential. The thing is, It's another scoring unit by virtue of being able to pull any of the Warrior squads onto an objective marker, and when you're playing 2000 points with 3 Troops that operate in a Phalanx formation, albeit tough ones, having the 'Lith be able to operate somewhat independently elsewhere makes the army not fall apart playing objective control missions.
- Scarabs great, most people know how good they are, or soon learn.
- Spyders are truly the 'Support' of 'Heavy Support'. Gloom Prisms are essential, they stack, the main part of the army fights together so the 3" range is not a handicap. You don't want your Warrior brick subject to stuff like Fear of the Darkness, Jaws of the World Wolf, blah-de-blah. The Monolith loves the Fab arrays, Arks less so much as once penned they're goneski.
- Destroyers haven't set the world on fire. I have the models so they made the cut, but it wouldn't be hard to find a better use for that 200 points.
- Oh, the hidden Warscythe/Mindshackle Lords with 5 Warrior meatshields are working well. Charging into combat from the opentopped Ark, and the damage the Lords can inflict once there always seems to be a surprise to people.

Ohhhh, I had been wondering why you were sticking Lords in Ghost Arks! (seemed like a bit of a waste, but I guess if that tactic worked for you, more power to ya)
Just wondering, though: are you only running two Spyders? (or are those supposed to be two UNITS of Spyders, hopefully 3 per unit?)
I agree you should ditch the Destroyers for now (maybe they'll get better after 6th Ed. updates Preferred Enemy to include shooting?)

I've been playing an escalation league and use deathmarks with a VODtek. They have been hit and miss. I've had them drop and take out a IG Command squad on their first turn, only to be wiped off the board by return shooting the next turn. I've had them wipe out a full 20man unit of CSM in two turns, and then VOD to safety. I've also had them completely whiff against a 5-man tac. squad and get obliterated over the next 2 turns. More importantly... I've had them sit in the sideboard when I really, really needed them. I'm just not finding them to be consistent.

Problem getting the Chrono in is it means I lose the Res Orb and Warscythe in that squad. Rather than doing that I've been hoping in vain that Imo will just roll a damn 3+; he hasn't been obliging.
Yeah it's just two Spyders. It's not a scarab farm list. They are really there for the Psychic defense, and the Fab arrays are nice to haves. They blob does not appreciate psykers messing with it.
The potential is there to just to drop 5 Destroyers and add four Spyders. Maybe not a bad idea. Only thing against that is I've never really felt the need for more Scarabs than what I had in the games I've played, or more Spyders (for CC).
I've tried Transmog Crypteks in the 5-man Arks in one game, and the typical Destroteks as well.. The Lord option is atypical from observation of other lists but actually seems to be a real gem, because with a charge they can clear out opposing scorers on an objective far more decisively. Pre-assault placement from an open topped vehicle is easy, the Lord charges into the squad leader, the warriors pin the rest in place and you can see how it would pan out from there
Admittedly more of a fun pick up game list than a finely tuned competitive tournament one though.

I agree - they are an unreliable gimmick - ok for pickup friendly games but too risky for competitive play.

Regarding Death&Despair squad: I've only ever considered them as single-serving-kamikaze-squads (their only job to take out the enemy's best unit).
In this regard, they've worked every time (for me, anyway).
If they survive after the unit they were marking are gone, they're still somewhat useful... just not as awesome as they were before, when they were benefiting from the "Hunters From Hyperspace" rule.

I'll continue to play with that unit, but only because I'm locked into it for the escalation league I'm in. As far as HfH, I think they should get to do another marker if the unit marked previously isn't on the table anymore. I think that they will get significantly better once 6th comes around, but I'm not holding my breath for that.
One way to make this unit more reliable is to always deploy second, deploy the unit on the board, and VOD near their target in your first turn of moment. That way, they won't be stuck in reserves when you need them (and not relying on the Etheral Interception rule).

Does including two DespairTeks per unit help? (or would you consider it a waste of points, because as soon as the HfH marker is gone, the Abyssal Staff is no where near as good anymore)
Also, what happens when you CAN'T deploy second? Do you leave them in reserves and just hope they're able to come in at a convenient time?

Ok, here's my possible short-term and long-term modifications. I have enough money coming in soon to basically add the ghost ark and the stalkers, but probably not another barge, so the lith stays for now, especially since I painted it up nice and pretty.
1. HQ
Overlord with MSS, Phaeron and Warscythe
Zahndrekh
Elites
5 Deathmarks with Veiltek
Triarch Stalker
Triarch Stalker
Troops
14 warriors (HQs go here): Destrotek with Flame Gaze
5 warriors in a Ghost Ark with Pulsetek and normal Destrotek
5 warriors in a Ghost Ark with Pulsetek and normal Destrotek
Fast Attack
5 scarabs
Heavy Support
Annihilation Barge with Gauss
Annihilation Barge with Gauss
Monolith
2. HQ
Overlord with MSS, Phaeron and Warscythe
Zahndrekh
Elites
5 Deathmarks with Veiltek
Triarch Stalker
Triarch Stalker
Troops
14 warriors (HQs go here): Destrotek with Flame Gaze, Lord with MSS, warscythe
5 warriors in a Ghost Ark with Pulsetek and normal Destrotek
5 warriors in a Ghost Ark with Pulsetek and normal Destrotek
Fast Attack
4 scarabs
4 scarabs
Heavy Support
Annihilation Barge with Gauss

Bear in mind I can kick out the warriors in the barges (especially if/when one wrecks) and portal them with the monolith, which gives it some use.

Since the despairtek can't really harm any vehicles, I've thought it appropriate to include a Stormtek from time to time. Most of the time though, I would include a lord with a res orb to add some resiliency. You would need to keep them in deepstrike reserves, yes. I haven't faced anyone canny enough to force me to deploy first yet. We'll see when that happens. I have my eye on a C'tan shard with Withering Worldscape and Grand Illusion for larger games, that would help if the Deathmarks somehow got stuck without a target. The other time you'd want that unit in reserves is if the unit you want to mark is also in reserves. In that case, you might want to deepstrike them via Ethereal Interception when that unit comes in, but way away from his units. Then, VOD over during your turn. @katfude I like list 2 better, but not for any reason that I can explain. It just feels a bit tighter, though you may want to go with 1 larger group of scarabs. Otherwise, they are too easy of a kill point.

Why not add another cryptek with the flamer into the deathmark squad for a mere 30 points?

@ JohnnyCage My rational for not adding another despairtek to the unit really is focused around the experience I had in a game recently.
Admittedly, my deathmarks were on a tear. In 2 turns of shooting, they had obliterated a 20 man unit of CSM... that's just with 5 Deathmarks and 1 VOD/Despairtek. That tied me with him on killpoints (scarabs hadn't gotten a charge off earlier and were destroyed by his berzerkers). I NEEDED to take down his empty rhino for the win. Deepstriking the Deathmarks near the rhino, I realized how long my odds were against hurting it. The flamer doesn't work against vehicles. The sniper rifles are str 3 against armor, and only 6's on the to-hit rolls will do anything.

hmm, I can see why you would think to take the StormTek with you.
The ResOrb Lord, though, I would consider a waste (I don't anticipate needing the unit much after they've accomplished their goal. As far as I'm concerned, their job is to appear, wipe out an enemy unit, and mission complete. If they're able to provide some service afterwards, then more power to them, but that's just icing on the cake. Besides, if they get assaulted, there's precious little you'll be able to do about it with just one Lord).

Granted, the flamer wounding on a 2+ is pretty sick, but 1/3 of games are kill point. I feel bad about a suicidal group that doesn't net me at least 2 kill points. I'm not completely sure on how to do that (maybe 6th will allow 'reactive' shooting combined with Ethereal Interception, and they'll be able to VOD out of there before getting hosed).

Ok, I've now nailed down the list I will use for the foreseeable future (won't be able to afford anything else/kinda want to build up some Tau):
HQ (both in warrior blob)
Zahndrekh
Overlord w/ MSS, Phaeron
Elite
5 Deathmarks with Veiltek
Triarch Stalker
Triarch Stalker
Troops
15 warriors with a Gaze of Flametek
5 warriors in a Ghost Ark with a Pulsetek and Destrotek
5 warriors in a Ghost Ark with a Pulsetek and Destrotek
Fast Attack
5 Scarabs
Heavy
MONOLITH!!!11111oneone
Annihilation Barge
Annihilation Barge
2000 on the nose. I will probably some day have the willpower to give up the monolith (maybe if I get my ass kicked because of it in my list). I want to stick with it at least until I see if 6th edition buffs it up at all.
I lose a lot of CC in my blob, but I have a LOT of anti-infantry ability and can give myself Counter Attack when the baddies close in. Both big guys have Staffs of Light, but I see a lot of GK/ MEQ, and it keeps with the shooty theme.
Generally I will deploy like so:
Stalker Ark Warrior Blob Ark Stalker
With deathmarks in deepstrike reserve and the scarabs and monolith in whatever position is most threatening. Monolith will atempt to get near an objective and defend it, and will pull a 5 man warrior group out of an ark over to it to claim it later.
How's that float your boat?

Yes it does.
I've been rocking these units since the codex dropped, and absolutely swear by 'em. I always take two units as a staple now.
Also, to the OP: you're wasting points in bringing the Stormtech with the Death & Despair units. The Stormtech costs as much as 2x Deathmarks, doesn't have rending shots, and isn't AP 1 like the Despairtek. In fact, you'd be better off using a second Despairtek (although this is really overkill) Also, if you're bringing the Overlord in that unit, then there's very little point in choosing the Warscythe over a regular Hyperphase Sword: the +2 Str bonus is meaningless as you're wounding on a 2+ either way, and both deny armour saves.

What about after the HfH marked enemy unit is gone? (you won't get that 2+ wounding forever, after all... though, really, why is an Overlord with the Deathmarks?) Though, azazel the cat, you seem to have the most experience with the D&D squad. How do you usually run them? (with ResOrb Lords? 2 DespairTeks? Other means of keeping them useful after their initial HfH markers are gone? etc)

I run two units like this: 1x Despairtek w/ VoD 5x Deathmarks That's all, generally. It's only 155 points and on average will deal 8 unsaved wounds to a Space Marine tac squad during the shooting phase. If I'm bringing the C'tan for the Grand Illusion trick, then I'll try to include a second Despairtek in each unit, because I want those units ot survive longer, and they really are glass cannons. However, normally I'll just send the two units after something squishy in the backfield like Long Fangs (the D&D units' favourite snack) I'll generally VoD the D&D unit within flame template range (I'm quite well-known in my gaming group for pulling off insane Deep Strikes) and after wiping out the marked unit, I will either use both units to work together in order to gang up on a third enemy unit (unmarked) or else hide them in a safe corner somewhere, and use them to VoD onto enemy objectives to contest during the final game turn. It's this latter part that makes them such a threat even after they've killed their marks, because it will either force your opponent to change tactics if they understand that they might lose due to contested, or else it will completely catch your opponent by surprise. (And if you're playing a kill point scenario, these guys work great at roaming the battlefield, picking off stragglers in units that didn't get completely wiped out) EDIT: Basically, after the HfH markers are gone, I treat the squads like empty drop pods!
