hello dakka,

firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong forum; if there's a better place for it please let me know!

I'm looking for some help assembling my first 40k list. I am a complete 40k noob; I've yet to play my first game. I've read through the rule book and SM codex a time or three, watched many battle reports and read through some of the SM tactica articles here on dakka. I've made a few lists in battlescribe based on the models I have, but I really have no clue what's going to play well together. so, dakka, I come to you

here are the models I have available:

- full collection of aobr SM models (captain, dread w/mm and stormbolter, 5-man squad of shootie termies with no special weapons, 10-man tac marine squad with missle launcher and flamer)
- another 10-man tac marine squad box
- command squad box
- 5-man assault marine squad
- rhino box + the razorback weapon bits
- land speeder box
- sniper scouts box

I'd like to keep my list as WYSIWYG as possible in terms of wargear selections. I have all the bits for each model that came in their original boxes, but nothing beyond that. I'm not against picking up a few weapon bits here and there to round out a squad's choices, but I'm not at the point where I want to buy 4 boxes of devs just so I can field one dev squad with 4 matching heavy weapons (as an example)

I'm looking for list suggestions based on the models I have available (doesn't have to use all of them). I'm not aiming for any particular point total; whatever would be appropriate for me to learn the game with. any pointers on how to field said list would be a plus, of course

cheers,

v

Captain w relic blade from AoBR model

Command squad w 4 plasmaguns
Razorback w TL assault cannon

Dread w mm, DCCW and HF

5 terminators, would be great to buy single term with CML off ebay if you can here to take to 6

10 tacs w flamer, ML

10 tacs w combimelta, melta, lascannon, rhino w dozer blade

Snipers w telion

10 assault marines w thunderhammer, 2 plasma pistols ie get another box of these guys if you can

Speeder typhoon w MM and missiles

So im advocating you get razorback, more assault marines, single termi w CML and convert a telion

Would be solid to learn with although would probably struggle against heavy armour list

First off, welcome to 40k.
My suggestion would be to start off with a list of 750 or 1000 points.
If you start off with an army like

Captain and command squad in rhino/razorback

2 tac. squads

dreadnought.

That's about 750 points and should give you a good feel for the army.
I would suggest another rhino or razorback to put your guys in.

Yeah, a captain, 2 tactical squads and a rhino for each squad is basically the bread and butter of a space marine list. Add what you like / thinks will work well and you'll have a decent list.

Baneguard hits the nail on the head for a basic starter army.

When I played bog standard codex space marines, the thing I found worked best was a lot of something, eg, lots of devasators, lots of assault marines or just a bucket load of tactical marines, play to your strengths. Run a solid hq eg captain that goes with your army, although space marines are meant to be this super flexible force on the tabletop spam what other armies don't, eg tacical marines, dreds or devasators. Just don't try to outplay something that's specfically built for that, eg outshoot ig or tau or take assault marines against blood angels. Hope this helps

When you say Salamanders I just wanted to point out Vulkan is not so suitable for your units.

Do you want a list that uses your units and Vulkan?
Or a list without?

I don't have vulkan at the moment, so let's say without also, I just realized I have another rhino/razorback (showed up in the post this morning, though I have no memory of ordering it :p)

I can tell you vulkan is worth the buy, 190 points, stats of a captain, 2+, 3+ with all his wargear, but the best thing he gives you is the army benefits, take this from a salamander player!

Yeah, if you plan on taking vulkan, you have to make sure that atleast 80% of your army benifit from him, else take something else.

I'm sure I'll add vulkan to my list at some point because, aside from fitting in perfectly with my army, he seems to be one of the better character choices. for now, though, I'm trying to work out a list based on the models I already have available.

I am against named characters

See so many Vulkans... Always similar list, dont expect opponent to be delighted as chances are he played a list like yours recently

My suggestion is craft a list that is different with fluff that gives them some history and character, will be more enjoyable and will be 'yours'

You don't have to have vulkan, its just very characterful, though you don't have to have vulkan to have a very characterful salamanders army. Iv'e seen heaps of salamanders without vulkan that were fun to play against and competitive.
