So, I need some help. I am new to the hobby and have only played two games. I bought, built and painted my grey knights without any strategy in mind. I need some help in figuring out how I should play what I already have and/or what I should add to my army.

Both games I have played I got romped by a Tau army.

Here's what I have:

10 Terminator Models
-2 Psilencers (w/halberds)
-1 Incinerator (w/Power Sword)
-7 Halberd and Storm Bolter

5 Interceptors
-1 Psycannon
-1 Power Sword
-3 Halberds

5 Purgators
-4 Psycannons
-1 Power Sword

1 Dreadnought
-Multi and Fist

Draigo
Librarian with warding stave

I am not against switching out some bits but mainly I am looking to optimize what I already have and add more strategically picked models.

So I am not a GK player however I do a ton of reading on Warhammer 40k and the general consensus seems to be psycannons are the way to go. At long range they give you anti-tank punch with psybolt ammunition. On the dread since GK lack a real form of long range fire support doubling up AC with psybolt ammunition will let you sit back and take out vehicles. Especially those nasty Tau railguns. +1 Str on those AC can cause problems. I have never seen a GK player use Purgation Squads so I have to say I would imagine dropping them is a good idea. Remember the more psycannons you have in your squads the better off your going to be. At least that is the idea I get from reading many competitive GK lists. You are not going to out shoot the Tau especially from across the board so if possible I would say get a transport or two in there. Yes it will probably get blown up but that extra movement you can give your guys to start the game helps you out. Another thing might be to upgrade a squad to paladins and give them a variety of weapons. This will allow you better wound allocation (spreading out wounds over models with different wargear instead of having to take all the wounds on a single model before moving to the next) Again I do not play Grey Knights just some observations from my readings and comparisons to your list.

Draigo, then use the termies as paladins
rebuild one as an apothecary, then use the other models as a strike squad to make the minimum 2 troops. Fill out the points with what you have spare.

This is Draigowing, and even the massive amount of fire-power Tau can pump out is almost negated by the 2+/4+ and FnP from the apothecary.

Thanks for the info. I am planning on adding a few psyfleman dreads like you said. I think I will also drop the purgation squad and separate the psycannons into strike squads.

Someone else suggested getting rid of the HQ and getting an inquistor.

Psycannons cant add psy bolt ammo to them, they are just psycannons.

@ the OP
i would say play a few games with a small Draigo wing, you have two 5 man teams of terms you can run them as palidins for your troops. your dread you can give scout from your Grand Stragity and hit from the side, or make him scoring and hold objs.

You can make a good few lists out of this to get an understanding of how GK are to fight with, just change your list and keep playing.

If Tau are giving you trouble you could DS or outflank your terms, use your libby to cast shrowding if hes hitting you with railguns so you get a good cover save, and just get into CC and tear his xeno *** apart.

Honestly I'm new too and doing GK. Psilencers are best against Daemons otherwise they're kinda crap compared to psycannons so I'd switch those out. Originally I had my dread with autocannon, psybolt ammo, and an assault cannon. But it's really at it's best with 2 autocannons and psybolts...I know everyone does it but for good reason lol. And maybe take 2 of them if you can. Purgators I'm not really a fan of as I'd rather have the dreads and they're 45 points cheaper than the 5 man 4 cannon unit. Also interceptors I'm kind of neutral to. They're kinda pricey for being a faster strike squad. But if you're having success with them keep them. What point games are these 1500 it looks like? Draigo and Libs are solid HQ choices but that's a 3rd of the points at 1500. I think another unit (maybe purifiers) would work better. Probably drop the Lib as Draigo can make more things scoring since you only have 2 as it is. Ormake things scouting if it's not objective based. Just my 2 cents...hope it helps and good luck.

I tried this in my first game. My paladins ended up taking 40+ shots when I tried to get into close combat. They were gone in one turn. Although I did roll a lot of ones.

You on a roll for the silly 'X army is OP' posts today?

Again, GK are not a win button.

I don't see how this is 1000 pts. I mean even if you aren't paying for the psycannons and other upgrades you're at around 1170. Draigo 275, Lib 150, 10 terms 400, 5 interceptors 130, 5 purgs 100, dread 115. And that's without the upgrades.

If I were you I'd get some psyfle dreads.. two would be beneficial.

If you don't know what those are, they are a dread with 2 Twin-linked autocannons and issued with psybolt ammunition.

Secondly your squads are kind of everywhere. That purgation squad almost certainly could use a transport, preferably a rhino. They only have 24" on their psycannons, so it would probably be best to go cruising speed first turn and then deploy them in a strategic location in cover where they can actually get shots off. Without the transport that unit is very susceptible to fire considering each marine carrying a psycannon is worth as much as a terminator and considerably easier to kill.

Also, someone mentioned deep-striking which is something to keep in mind.

I started a thread about this the other day and of all the armies in the game, Tau are generally thought be the worst in CC and are pretty much the only army without a viable CC unit. Therefore, deep-strike and get close, or get a bigger squad of interceptors and shunt towards them. Once you get into CC with any of their units they will likely fold. Don't worry too much about any multi-wound suits because you have force weapons and they don't have any psychic defense as far as I can recall.

Wow..great advice. I am going to go with it. I think my next addition is 2x psyfledreads and 2x Rhinos and then a couple sets of grey knights. i think I am also going to get a plain inquisitor for lower points in the HQ. That way I will have a few options.

Thanks.

I'll be trading out the Dreadknight for two Dreads with Two TL Auto Cannon and Psybolt Ammo, when I get the funds.

I wouldnt recommend going for three Psyfleman Dreads. If any close combat unit ties them up, you'll be pretty screwed against vehicles. I always take the Venerable Dread and it has worked for me really well in this situation.
