Greetings to you all.

I'm a new Dakka member but I've lurked for a long time. I'm more of a hobbyist than a gamer. I collect all sort of stuff to paint. However, I've actually been getting the itch to PLAY. To try my hand and see how I fare as a general. WHFB has always fascinated me from a lore/fluff standpoint and I'm certain it would be my game of choice were I to play. I have to admit to some hesitation though. I've heard rumors that WHFB is a dying breed. Rumors that the player base in general is shrinking more and more each year. Now, I think there is a club local to where I live that plays and plays regularly but I've yet to actually confirm this. My question to you all is this: should I jump into WHFB with both feet with the idea being to play the game or is the future of the game too much in question? I can pick an army myself but I'd hate to commit to something that is fading.

Thanks in advance.

Those rumors are false on the whole.

It is possable that the game may be dying in certain areas as interest shifts, but there are plenty of places where it is still very strong.

Out here in CA its very strong with many local GTs and an excellent and dedicated player base.

I think one of the reasons that people think it is dying out is that many of the Warhammer Fantasy focused podcasts seem to have died out. I too am just getting back into Fantasy (haven't played since first edition when the undead were just undead, none of this vampire/tomb king nonsense), and it seems that right after 8th edition a lot of the podcasts around Fantasy have kind of died out.

I think it's very regional.
In my FLGS, it's dead. Apparently 40k was taking over, and 8th ed. put the last nail in the coffin for those who still played Fantasy.
However, in my gaming group, we always play Fantasy. We used to play 40k, but well... Fantasy grew on us instead of die.

So it depends where. You should look into your local gaming groups.

Near me, at my local club, we used to almost never play fantasy. Now its almost every week.
So, I would agree with The CF in that it is regional, tastes change and then change back.

Here in South Orange County CA WFB is very much alive and well and at my local GW it is played more than 40k.

If you play, others will join you. It's a rare wargamer, in my experience, that can resist the allure of a new system. Especially one as rich and well supported as WFB.

In my area its becoming the main game system played. I put this down to the fact that WHFB is full of win and that with 6th ed 40k on its way people have lost the urge to want to start a new army or add to there collection until they know whats getting the nerf hammer in 6th.

Damn I cant wait to the GW legal team codex comes out now there is a dex that will conquer all.

I can't ever imagine it fading, and I doubt there are many areas which don't at least have a club or two where it is popular. At least at my club, other games and systems fade in and out of popularity, but it is a very rare club night when there is not at least 1 game of WFB going on.

My concern would be the cost, and fortitude needed to complete a new army from scratch, rather than the difficulty of finding new players.

Thanks everyone.

That's pretty reassuring. Wednesday night appears to be WHF night at the FLGS here so I'm going to stop by and see what's going on. As for an army, it's come down to elves. Wood elves or high elves. I'm not sure which I like more. They both look cool in their own way.

Current edition 40k rulebook and army balance has given more converts to fantasy than Iv'e ever witnessed, so now is a great time to get into it.
