I had an awesome time in London yesterday! There were loads of ace demo games, far too many cool minis all vying for my money, and I also managed to bag silver in the sci-fi single cat of the painting comp! Woot!

Any other Dakka members have good day there yesterday? Got any stories or cool pics to share?

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away...

I was there with my son and a mate. Arrived around 10.30 and walked straight in on our pre-paid ticket. Was struck by how busy the event was this year, just seems to get bigger every year... Range and quality of games were awesome and inspiring.

Personally, I took advantage of the Hasslefree pre-order offer and spent a shed load with them. Also got some bases from micro-art, wish I'd shopped around though as found them cheaper with another trader! Got some Black Scorpion cowboys, but a little disappointed to see the qaulity of the figures now they're in plastic. My lad bought some of the Crooked Dice Doctor Who minis and even got given a free copy of their Canary Wharf Dr Who game as he was dressed up as the 11th Doctor!! He also got the Ainsty Tardis console... BIG Dr Who fan...

Was tempted by a few other traders but the wallet spoke louder than the heart and I held off

Found this over at http://www.blmablog.com/2012/04/salute-2012-video.html

Totally shattered by the time we got homebut was another great show, the Excel venue is perfect, much better than Olympia 2 or the Kensington & Chelsea Town Hall...

Great fun - I queued in the cash queue, but still managed to get in by about 10.15.

Picked up a PACK Mini for trips, using the £10 Battlefoam discount ticket in the goody bag. Then got some Hasslefree Pirates (Commissars), Mongoose Judge Dredd models (Arbites) and a razor saw to convert them all with.

Was a bit stressed for time as I had a date that night, but I had a good time nonethesless. I picked up the new Primarches novel and a print of the cover to go with it, both signed by McNeil, Dunn and Thorpe. Also pre-ordered an Enforcer, although the guy at the counter appeared to mess up my order by not taking my money ?? Also got a set of Maxmini's Pre-Heresy Jump Packs and didn't come anywhere in the painting contest, was up against some tough competition.

Tell me about it! I felt very lucky to have scraped through against some incredible minis.

I just emptied out my crap from yesterday and discovered a few more minis that I forgot I had bought! That kinda explains where a few more quid went to, but i'm still at a loss as to where the rest of it went!

Well I had a blast there and was lucky I went in the car because I had to go and empty my bag twice before the day was out!

I got in at about 10.10 and thought I'd head over to FW to collect my Enforcer and Skinwolf before it got manic. It was already three deep then!

So instead I went for a wander round the East half of the room where most of the bigger retailers were and strolled up to the scrum that was the "bring and buy". Damn it was every man for himself there, but managed to get my hands on a Heroquest that looked mostly complete but like a smuck put it back.

Then strolled back to FW and fought my way to the counter. I was only going to get Modelling Masterclass 2 (I did, its great!) but then lost any sense of budgetary composure and walked away with a Demios LR, 2x Demios Rhinos, 2x Relic Contemptors, various arms and some Termies. Tyrant's Legion it is then!

After a visit to the car and some lunch I hit the West half of the hall picking up the odd thing here and there from the usual suspects but I came across a few stand out Companies/Games I hadn't heard of before;

Tablescape - This chap was selling tough pre-painted terrain items (amongst other things). The shipping containers were great value (3 for £16), light but tough and they looked good too. Made from expanded polystyrene (but with a hard plastic like finish) this is a great place to detail tables.

Hawk Wargames - Just showing miniature for a new 10mm sci-fi game they are publishing. Keep an eye out for these guys its really pretty but I was particularly taken by their buildings. There's another thread here on Dakka just started in N&R.

Crooked Dice - I played their afternoon session of 7TV and had a whale of a time playing it. It's a skirmish wargame based around 60/70's TV shows and played very much tongue in cheek. Their On Her Majesties Crooked Service show game pitted 6 players (3 good Charlie's Angels types vs The Guru and his Minions!) on differing missions in and around the Gurus mountain-top complex. The game bounced along nicely and the table itself was a work of art. My Angel (and team of mountain rescue guys) armed as she was with a big spanner bashed her way into the HQ retreat and destroyed the Doomsday weapon.

Great Fun, I bought a copy of the rules on the spot. Now to build a secret base, but for good or evil.......?

Did you get a yellow copy of the order form? I'd give 'em a call Monday or Tuesday to check what's happened, either way.

Definitely give them a call tomorrow or Tuesday, then - probably Tuesday, to give them a day to get everything organised.

They're old news, Orki - they were on display at the Forge World Open Day. The flyer is the Avenger, IIRC, and the Squig is from Monstrous Arcana.

Got a few pieces of Tablescape's stuff, and I too bought a set of the 3 crates, Nice and easy bit of scatter terrain. I've also got a couple of the big storage tanks they do as well.

The Hawk Games stuff did indeed look most interesting.

He challenged me to stand on them to show how tough they are! I backed down as I didn't want to be the 20st bloke stomping on scenery, it could have given the wrong impression!

Yes there was a bit of that going on all over the place. I could barely keep my eye off the models, er model soldiers I mean!

Special mention to the lady dressed up in sixties attire that was taking photos of the 7TV games, she really looked the part and was very funny.

In all seriousness I hope most of them were gamers as I have to say I was impressed at the number of women attending the event rather than cynical attempts at sex sells (I'm looking at you Miniature Wargames Stall and your almost entirely attractive female staff!), as this gave a rather more inclusive community than the soap dodgers we might sometimes assume make up gamers.

I should say that I was keeping an eye out for you Red for that pint but gave up when I realised that about 50% of the audience was made up of tall blokes with beards and long hair!

Brilliant event, my first salute.

Went crazy with groundzerogames and critical mass games and a bit of Black Hat and antenocitti... all 15mm, then went to check Frothers tables and chat with friends there... delivered some sculpts etc... Later on meet up with some clients and finally got some hasslefree minis to close the day... Oh and traded in a genestealer old magus muhahaha.

I was very impressed again with the wayland stand. Huge is not a big enough word.

The only critique I could give was the space to move between stands was a little tight with so many beer guts (including mine) getting in the way, but I guess that's all down to costs of floor space so may not be something you can do much about.

In terms of stock, it was great, you had a selection of everything, although would have liked to see some comparisons with the RRP (maybe you did, but I didn't see anythinglike this?) - was tempted by a Stormraven but wasn't sure what the discount worked out to be. Have since checked your website and kicked myself that I didn't get one, oh well maybe next year when I've cleared some of the lead / plastic that is now sitting on the table eagerly awaiting paint...

Will Wayland be at any other UK shows this year? I'm planning on going to Warfare (Reading) and SELWG (Crystal Palace)

We are booked to go to SELWG, and are looking where we can get to with a reasonable sized stand. almost certainly getting into some more European shows.

Re the space between racking.... well we started off 2 years ago with 1m, now its approx 1.8m. That means the stand has grown massively and of course the space costs money.

The racking was all custom built for us too, and you might have noticed the colours too.

We will look at adding RRP/Sale prices on items, that is a fair point but does mean pricing takes twice as long.

Maybe Wayland need to offer a 'diet discount' - trim down those waistlines, get money off and more room on the stands !! Sounds like a winner

Seriously though, I thought your set-up was great, although I feared that there may be a few unscrupulous punters pocketing the odd item without your team being able to see the whole stall at all times... Hope not though as I would hope that the wargaming community is better than that. Maybe though get the guys above to patrol the stand...

For the RRP signage, maybe a 'ready reckoner' either with the main sellers listed or a general x% off GW RRP with the odd example. Could have these printed up on A4 laminates or similar and stuck to the end of each rack? The big high street retailers do this on those 'blue cross' one day sales. The item displays full price but the signage tells you what you'll pay for different values - saves them reticketing every item of stock...

I also thought the set up you guys had was very well done, I did wonder if you were risking losing stock via a five fingered discount but I suspect most of the people there wouldn't do that plus you seemed to have plenty of eager bodies about keeping an eye on things.

I spoke to several of your "blueshirts" and they were all very helpful and polite... must be a good batch yes ?

A wee bit more space would be handy a'tween the rows but what you had was workable.

The layout was perhaps a bit perplexing. If there was a theory or order to what was where it wasn't apparent -- but that's being really nitpicky here. Part of the attraction of an event like this is just being able to browse. But maybe some elevated signs saying what's in each section might be handy.

I followed the old boy on the left into the hall from the car park. Not bad as a claim to fame!

The Wayland stand was pretty well laid out and as a bit of a chunky monkey couldn't fault the isle widths.

I did want to head over there early and pick up the show model but didn't find the satnd till late in the afternoon. I want to say Wayland needed one of those big high banner/flags to aid navigation, but it was more than likely there and i'm just a bit of a berk.

Thanks for the input guys, we do listen. Last year there were complaints of long queues, which I hope you agree we resolved.
The space was expanded to make it less claustrophobic which should have helped. The racking arrived 2 days before and there were bits and pieces still to complete - the cards and holders to identify what was where etc. But the major banners were held off as they will all would have been thrown away as we are about to create new ones to match the launch of the new site.
