alright, im sorry If this comes across as a "poor me" thread but really, I just need to vent.
I'm frustrated that after spending 200$ on this game, I could never pull a victory outof any game. My army just keeps getting tabled and annihilated by everything else I just kinda feel like I just suck at this hobby.
i have been playing since last december, and If anyone looks at the threads I made, almost all of them is asking why I keep loseing. I just feel like I suck at this hobby. all my models are proxy's or constantly falling apart, and I feel just plain pointless durning games as my opponent seems to dance all over the table killing all my guys without taking a single loss. I feel like a tosser as everyone cheers for the person other than marines even if I'm doing badly. one guy even told me "you suck" after he saw I couldn't destroy one thing durning a game.
so, yea, this is a "poor me" thread. sorry...

What you probably need most is someone to work with you to show you the ropes. Perhaps there's someone older at your FLGS that you could ask advice from?
I know that if someone approached me and asked to help them learn how to play the game, I'd certainly take the time to do it.

Stick it, try stuff out, see what works.

Thanks to all who responded. I remember someone said he never won a game until 7 months after he started. so I guess my 5 month dive into it shouldn't expect to find gold every time x-x and since I have blood sugar issues, I should really eat better so I dont get so depressed anyway, loosing still sucks, but I will share my list for 1,000pts and the armies at my local GW is more or less this: x3 necrons, x4-6 chaos marines, x4 MEQ's (space marines, blood angels, space wolves) x1 tau, x1 daemons, x3 eldar, x1 tyranid and x1 ork here is my 1,000pt list as you asked (I got help writing this from my GW manager using the things I got) 1000pts: HQ: Epistolary librarian-150pts Troop 1: 10 man tactical squad, melta gun, rocket launcher, rhino-210pts Troop 2: 10 man tactical squad, melta gun, lascannon, rhino-220pts Troop 3: 5 man tactical squad, combi-melta, lasback-175pts Elite: Dreadnaught w/ cc arm and multimelta-105pts Fast: typhoon-90pts Fast: Attack Bike-50pts Recently I got eaten by space wolves, tea-bagged by footdar, got stuck trying to beat down necrons, and today A deamon prince sacraficed my libby and dreadnaught wile plauge marines puked on my space marines I am still playing around with the libby powers (took vortex and force dome against chaos ) and I need to put an attack bike together (or give my tactical guys diffrent weapons) I also was playing around with the idea of putting 10 marines in a rhino with the libby (troop 1) and have troop 2 drive along side it while the TL lasback and lascannon half of troop 2 sit in the back with the typhoon. So in theory I would have 15 marines, my HQ, dreadnaught and attack bike go forward while the 2 lascannons and typhoon sit back and try to blow things up Also was thinking of taking cato for Tankhunter tactical squad (troop 2) Edit: And thanks for help with this, Was really feeling down about getting stomped by plague marines

Possibly recommend a Drop Pod for the Dreadnought, maybe another attack bike? From experience they tend to die if there is only one. Libby powers depend on who you are facing - Null Zone is brutal against Daemons. Sicarius is best at 1500+ points as he is quite expensive. Also the libby cannot fit into the Rhino with 10 Marines. With this army it is quite maneuverable, so use that to your advantage. The list doesn't seem too bad, just clock up some more experience.

You are going to lose a lot while you learn the game. Don't take it the hard way. Just try to make sure you learn something new everytime you lose.
I've been playing 40k for 15 years now, and I do pretty decent. I've been playing Fantasy for about 2 years now, I break about 50/50. I've played Flames of War for about 4 months, I've won one game.
Your list doesn't look horrible, it should be able to handle a wide variety of foes. You just need to learn the ebb and flow of the game, and that just takes time, and a lot of beatings.
Buck up, victories will come. Just try to enjoy the game in the mean time, and don't be afraid to ask for some tips from your opponent at the end.

Really? *checks codex* arrg. hmm. Maybe I should put him with the 5 man squad? or just push 10 guys forward? those 5 man combat squads tend to die a lot x-x
and yea, I do need to play around more. I also need to build that darn attack bike x-x I was afraid before because everything in my army just falls apart with a glance, but hopefully that will get fixed with citadel glue.
And Thanks to everyone who responded to this low blood sugar induced pitty thread I should really learn to watch the clock on that. but anyways thanks for helping this noobie out ^^ I'll tryand run this list a few more times to really get the feel of it better and I should just have fun.

A few minor things you can change.
Epistolary is not a good use of points on a SM librarian.
Missile Launchers should be your weapon option on your tactical squads.
The Dreadnaught should have 2 autocannons, or if you perfer 1 autocannon and one assault cannon. This is good for transport killing. do not advance with this unit.
Land speeders die too quickly on their own for them to be worth it in my eyes.
The Attack bike should have a few friends.
What models do you have available?

I'd probably think about adding a heavy support unit as well, say a squad of Devastators. I've been playing a few years now and I've won only a few games. If you play with the right people, losing isn't bad at all. A lot of times they'll tell you how they were able to table you, as well as how you could have countered it. Unfortunately, we don't always have much choice in who we play if we want a game bad enough, but you can still learn something.
I would also try to familiarize myself with other codices. When you're playing against an army for the first time, it's tough not knowing what all they have, how many attacks certain units get, etc. It's easy to charge a unit you shouldn't, or inadequately defend against a unit that doesn't look that tough, but gets a boatload of attacks. Hang in there, you'll be fine.

Hang in there, I also got smashed the first 3 years I played. Not continuously, but I didn't fair very well and my first game nearly made me quit the game entirely. I hung in there and many losses later, a few friends with council and mentor-ship games, and even a trip to a different country across an ocean I found the play style I am both comfortable with and half decent at. Three years later I win about 60-70% of the games I play with my IG.. but in reality (as awesome it can be to play) the more important thing is to make friends out of the most intense games. That way, you will learn from them and grow your skills with theirs. If all else fails, ally with with them and then go play an Apoc game with them where the points are made up and winning doesn't matter. It's all about fun.

Dude I've been playing for a few years and for the most part I lose more than win, now I play Chaos Marines but I digress.
From what I see you might want to set the heavy weapons in a Devastator squad as I find having standard marine squads are at there best when mobile and that renders heavy weapons ineffective.
Some longer range weapons for the dreadnought is a good idea as well, autocannons being a popular choice.

I honestly cannot remember the last time I beat my brother, and his friend and I its either a draw or he wins. Come to think of it, I can't remember the last game that I won. Don't feel down, just enjoy it, and try to paint your models better than everyone else, so you have some consolation. On a side note, my brother is a far and away better painter than I. And I still enjoy myself!

Anyway, as every1 else said do not despair and try to have fun Also getting a friend teaching the rules and how to and what to and what not is also a good idea My buddy who is playing competitively tabled me during the first 2 turns on my first match But I am improving Initially I was always losing, now I am getting most of the games as draws I am going to win my nemesis SOON!!!

Find someone who is fun to play against (i.e. not a jerk). Play a lot of 500 or 750 point games against him. 500 points is perfect for a beginner: It's fast, there's only a few units and if you loose, you can play a third, fourth, maybe fifth time?
The "few units" is really important I think: When I play bigger games, a lot of times, my units start getting in each others way or I start misjudging or forgetting a unit. I started out playing small games and am slowly working my way up With my Blood Angels, I can easily play 1500 points now, but with my Tau, I still get in my own way. I guess shooty is harder than assault for that matter...
However, the downside of small games is: If e.g. you have few anti-X and you opponent spams X, it might be over before it started. That's also the reason why not to play against jerks at that point level

Also remember, close combat is the bane of your lists existence. The only half decent cc you have in there is the Dreadnought( DO NOT let him touch monstrous creatures, anything else is fine, just not monstrous creatures)
So stand back, shoot, and shoot some more. Focus on letting your long range AT de-transport your opponent, before moving in with your own tac squads to shoot his troops down.
Dont forget, no CC for you, and focus focus focus that beautiful marine rapid fire (onto one unit until its dead, then repeat) Caveat* NEVER strictly adhere to this advice, if charging a deadly CC unit to hold it up or prevent it from getting the charge bonus saves you more pain than it causes, then do it.*

You need to play against people who aren't enormous postulant donkey-caves. Anyone worth playing against would be willing to give you this advice himself. Anyone worth playing against would never let the words "you suck" leave his lips. Look for the people in your store who offer you kind advice and hang out with them. You're a starting player - you need advice and encouragement.
Seriously... "you suck..." what the gak is wrong with some people?
Anyway, 40k is more about list building than some games, but it's still also a lot about what you do on the table. This is why you neet to play with some decent people who were raised in houses instead of mouthbreathing ass-tards who were raised in barns - you need to play against opponents who will give you friendly tactical advice after the game, if you ask for it.
That said, you are running a hybrid list - part vehicle, part unmounted infantry - and a lot of the advice I've gotten is to stay away from such lists. Half your army is much more mobile than the other half, which can make your forces easy to divide and conquer. Playing a hybrid list takes a lot of discipline, and requires you to give up some of the mobility of vehicles to keep your forces together, where they can support each other.
And find better opponents. You shouldn't feel sorry for yourself - I mean, feel how you feel, I don't mind - you should feel angry that these turd-faces are treating you so poorly.

wow, never thought I would see so many posts Alright, thanks for all the advice guys! I'll try not to play arseholes in the future (although, really, it's more or less two TFG's there) and I'll just play to have fun. also maybe grow a backbone and tell that player to stop. But I do play against some pretty good guys who do give me tactical advice. sometimes it is my problem of not eating right so I get mopey.
@ thakabalpuphorsefishguy yea figured that out last game when some beserking plague marines ran me over. Didn't really stand a chance x-x So I'm guessing I should just huddle up in a corner and shoot shoot shoot against guys like that? on a side note: it is embarassing when i can kill necrons in CC
Thanks again guys! I plan on going there again on wendsday and playing a good game against someone. maybe i'll post then?

Like everyone else said, losing sucks but it happens a bunch. Taking a loss in this game is hard, just because of the time and effort put into lists and games. "Sucking at something is the first step to being kinda good at something." - Jake the Dog
Look into getting some TH/SS Terminators and a Land Raider for them to ride. This is usually considered a staple in a C:SM list, and they usually perform well. They'll beat down mostly anything they get into combat with and they're tough enough to draw some fire.
The Libby is a sweet HQ and allows you to keep Combat Tactics, but have you thought about one of the other Special Characters in the codex? Vulcan will make all your MM more killy(and TH Terminators if you obtain some) and he's a nice beatstick in himself.

my recommendation for your army list is this:
epistolary upgrade off, use the free points to turn the plaserback tac squad into some Sternguard vets. They'll give you better fire power.
Also since yor pretty well pure shooting baseline razorbacks might work well on your 2 10 man tac squads. CS the melta into them and keep the heavy weapons in cover.
Also I recommend acquiring your enemies codexes. knowing what your enemy's units can do will really help your target priority/movements. since you are vanilla marines, everyone else knows exactly what you can do.
It will also let you catch "mistakes" that grant your opponents advantages, trust me looking back i can see alot of guys i played got away with some suspect behaviour simply because i did not know any better.
This can be done expensively by buying them or cheaply through google. I personally have all the current codexes on PDF but every army i play I own a physical copy heh.

From what I can see, you like to shoot. I recommend doing the following:
Drop the attack bike, the third troops and typhoon (for now)
Change the first two troops to both rocket launchers, make their rhinos both lasbacks and give the sarges power weapons
Epistolary doesn't do much for the points, I would suggest using him without any upgrades for now and keep him in support range, with no invul he's not a melee guy.
Keep your dread nearby your lines for defense.
Look into getting a thunderfire cannon or two, you have the ranged anti-tank, not the anti infantry. They are cheap point's wise and can reinforce ruins for better cover saves, plus they are deadly vs infantry.
Look into using sternguard and the libby, both in a drop pod or without. Gate of infinity plus sternguard is fun. Use locator beacons for better effects.
