So I have a list with Pedro Kantor and a MotF. I was wondering whether or not it would be better to have (in a 2000 point list) 1 Sternguard squad and five dreadnoughts, or 2 Sternguard units (maxed out, no combi weapons) and four dreadnoughts. The Sternguard would also come at the cost of a Scout unit. Making the best of both worlds would mean 3 and 3, but I really like Dreadnoughts.

I think dreadnought spam must be 4+.

That's how I run mine at least.

As for the Sternguard, drop 1 veteran from each unit to give 5 combi weapons in each and to give you the option of putting one of your HQs in with them....

Well its gonna depend on what else your list consists of. Also how you wish to play your list. Continuing on it can depend on how your dreadnoughts are outfitted. Truthfully too many variables to tell you a straight forward answer. Though Sternguard do look really nice as a troop choice. There is a certain appeal to the reasonably cheap combi weapons. Overall give us a better picture of your army and that makes things easier

My list (originally)-

Pedro Kantor
MotF with Conversion Beamer

5 Sternguard+ Razorback w/ TL LC
2 Dreads with TL LC and ML

5 scout with camo and sniper rifles + Telion
10 Scout with camo and sniper rifle
10 Tactical Marines with ML+Razorback w/ TL LC
10 Tactical Marines w/ Meltagun, Multi-Melta + Drop Pod w/ locator beacon

2 Dreads w/ 2 TL AC each
Reg. Dread + Drop Pod

I may take out a AC dread for maxing out the SG, or even remove a unit of scouts ot add more SG.

Seems to me like you have plenty of scoring units as it is. I would reduce or drop the 10-man scout unit to gear up your sterns and dreads.

No assault unit though? Who's Pedro gonna hang with?

I was going to have Pedro faff about with the Sternguard. Honestly, my goal with this army is to not get into CC as much as possible. However, in a larger game (2500 points) I might take a Vanguard squad (w/ SS and LCs) and put Pedro with that unit.

I was going to say give him an Honor Guard, until I actually looked at the unit entry. You could throw him in with some Assault Termies in a Raider, but it'd be a massive point sink.
