These are some photos of the sergeant of the newest tac squad I've started working on. Having only painted miniatures since February, I tried a bunch of new things here too, mainly airbrushing and oil washing... both of which I love now. Feel free to comment or criticize!

Looks pretty good, i like the blue, i would suggest perhaps putting some icons or text on the tabard as blank scrolls look like pillow cases to me. otherwise i think hes fantastic!

Micro pens are great for that sort of thing, you can get them at Micheals or other fabric stores mostly at least where im at.

I have been toying with the idea of adding some free hand to the cloth, I just don't have a lot of confidence in my free handing ability. I have a micro pen but to be honest, I've stopped using it in favor of a fine tipped brush (at least on purity seals and such).

I suggest free handing too. I put fist logos on all my tabards/loin cloths. They look more "interesting"

you can practice freehanding on paper. start big, then go smaller and smaller every time your happy about the result.
what also helps is to paint over a printed design the first couple of times. after a few turns your fingers will know the shape and you can allmost freehand with your eyes closed!

So I heeded everyone's advice and add a little free hand flair to the sarge. I practiced on some paper and did a light outline with pencil. I think it turned out okay and looks good sitting on my desk. Definitely gives the model a little more life.

He looks great as is, but you could try out some different shades of blues to help give the armor some definition as well. From the pic it looks like its all one solid color blue. Also you can give gold great highlights by using scorch brown and gold highlighting, and then washing with sepia, and hiting a smaller highlight with mith silver. Or you can go the NMM routes of golds which looks good too! I do that on my chest armor and the other method on trimed gold. Like I said it looks great esp since you have been only painting since Feb. That is a short learning curve! Also since you have an Airbrush look into OSL and zenthil highlighting.

He is actually three shades of blue. A base coat of Midnight Blue, zenithal highlighted with Ultramarine Blue, then lightly highlighted with a lightened Ultramarine blue. Unfortunately, the top picture is smaller than I intended so the effect is lost in the picture. It is most noticeable on the rear view and you can really see it from the side. The pigments take away from the effect on the rear leg armor too, but they aren't secured so i might wipe some off to show the blending a little better.
The Aquila is painted with Vallejo Liquid Gold (best gold paint ever!), and I agree, it could use a slight silver highlight. Thanks for the input!

The additions make all the difference. From table-top 'eh' quality to 'damn that's great!' Awesome work, amigo.

No problem at all. I like the dirty feet area as well.
