So, i have quite a bit of space marines. Roguht 2500 points. Im not sure if i want to expand much or not.
But i was thinking of maybe starting a necron army this summer. But i have no idea where to start. I know buying a codex would be a good start but im not sure where to go from there.
Maybe a battleforce?
I want to make sure i can get a good deal and make and effective army fast.
Pleasr and thank you.

Cannot really go wrong with a Battleforce or two. If you are truly new to Necrons and not an "old timer" with buckets of Warriors already, its a most excellent deal. Add a Command Barge and you've got a plastic-HQ to get going. Enough to start fighting and a solid core you'll likely use in all your future games.

I was thinking of buying the battle force. a command barge. and the buying and extra set of legs to make the both the death marks and immortals from the battleforce.
and yes i am new.
I was also thinking of buying a bunch of cheap warriors off ebay.

Warriors are boring as anything you can imagine (like waiting for a party to start with nothing to do) you have to hold up every arm in place to stop it sagging from the weight of the gun i find. when you've spent 12 hours assembling your warriors and cutting off all the sprue crap from your forty warriors you them have to paint then. yay forty lots of half an hour of the exact same thing. you could start with 24 warriors / 2 boxes, 10 immortals / 2 boxes, 5 lychguard / 1 box, 1 overlord, 1 cryptek (maybe, they're cheap and easy to assemble with plenty of practical uses)
and you will have a fairly competitive starting list which wont take so long. your so to speak second wave of models could be some transports, destroyers with upgrade packs or some tomb blades, wraiths and some deathmarks for those cc monsters and heroes. with the release of the new necron advance orders now is the time to be buying. A triach stalker would always be a cool addition to any army with s7 and all those guns + the epic look
thats my two cents

I think a solid base of Warriors is almost always a good choice for Necrons (barring some highly specialist lists). You get 20 in the Battleforce, which makes it distinctively unattractive for "old-time" necron players. But if you don't have any, it's a good solid core.

Generally, it's easy with Necrons to go off on a tangent with Stalkers and Wraiths and whatnot. But some solid-sized units of Warriors (and/or Immortals) will help you make your Reanimation protokolls go alot further. And the Ghost Arc is also amazing.

I would "start" with the solid stuff. Battleforce (Ghost Arc, Warriors, 5 Immortals, some Scarabs). Add maybe another 5 Immortals and Command Barge. That is the stuff you (almost) always need.

From there, I would experiment and proxy and try if you wanna go a shooty route (which some Stalkers, Destoryers, etc.. could supplement) or a CC-route with some Wraiths and Lychguard or perhaps a "trickery-"route with buckets of Cryptecs and perhaps a C'Tan shard etc.. . But not everything from these variants synergises well. So I'd always recommend to get a feel for the army with the basic stuff first. My 2 cents.

What is up with the My Little Ponies? I saw one as Horus recently.

I'd check out the rumours for second wave. Necron players are getting wraiths, tomb spiders, bikes and the triarch stalker. My Necron player friend would personally recommend the wraiths. Not only do they look really good but get whips that reduce enemy initiative to one. In an army where everything is I2 this is a major advantage. Combining this assault with lychguard with warscyths (str7 power weapons) gives you a serious hard hitting close combat weapons. My mate likes to imbed a destroyer lord in with the wraiths (says its like a gentleman and his hounds on the hunt )this means they can move 12'' and assault.

The triarch stalker just looks plain cool although its a bit low on armour.

Obviously battleforces fill out your army cheaply but if you want to get a tailored army from the go then I suggest buying the codex first n thoroughly read through it to figure out what you thinks worth taking.

Also, the difference between Immortals and warriors is really tiny. An immortal I think is only 17pts whilst a warrior is 14pts. My mate took only twenty in a 1500pts points and still had room for a monolith n two doom arks n some lords. With better armour and a better gun they really are better troops to take and my necron mate does just that. However at five per unit they are much more expensive in terms of money.

My Little Ponies?

It's something you should go watch a few episodes of.

Also, to the guy complaining about building 40 warriors:

It's pretty much the same for any army. Except who the heck takes 12hrs to build 40 of an infantry choice? >.>

Is there a permanent stickied thread for Chaos players to complain every time someone/anyone gets models or rules besides them? If not, there should be.

Ah, alas I believe my frail and simple mind cannot comprehend the deep and thought-provoking subtlties of My Little Pony. No. Its like the ending to Mass Effect I just, try as I might, can't figure it out I'am afraid. It is, truly a terrible state of mind I suffer from if I must say so.

Just went on a 2 hour pony research journey. Strangely, it was worth it.

Stalker looks wicked and in my opinion has great support capabilities.

It depends a lot on your style of play. As has been mentioned there are alot of nice units and it is easy to go off on a tangent and get a shiny unit (in my case Wraiths) which are great but dont blend with your army well.

i run a shooty army so am showig restarint and not buying Wraiths or Spyders. i always field scarabs as there can eat tanks and tie up nasty walker (dreads) for a few turns.

for a shooty army a Stalker coudl be nice as it as a great force multiplier. With your marine army being 2500 i'm guessingyou normally play on faily modest tables, so 24" is actually decent (meanign you coudl user the large blast weapon an twin-link multiple units at once!).

Anni/Command Barges are a great bargain! You get a cheap Heavy choice and a plastic HQ model, essentially for free.
