Hi,
I am planning on converting some AOBR termies to assault type and I was hoping to convert them from scratch built shields and hammers.
But i am lost for ideas at the moment so I was hoping for some help from Dakka on any good resources for stormshield conversion or scratch builds.
At this stage Im looking at plasticard for shields and will be knowcking some out and i will let you know how i go
So if anyone knows any good techniques or were i can find some please let me know.
Thanks in advance.

They are meant for power armour models but you might be able to get away with them with terminator shoulder pads. Or just use them in the scratch build.

You could always use some spare tank hatch bits. Just file off the hinges, decorate with purity seals, etc.

I used the same method for riot shields on my arbites, I'll try and find a picture of it.

If you have/can acquire some thin plasticard, you can do some surprisingly elaborate looking detailing with minimal effort by adding symbols/designs in layers. Layering forms, even if it's simply repeating a shape in descending scale, does a lot to add to the illusion of complexity. If you could manage to press mold a suitably sized skull, it wouldn't be all that hard to make a rough copy of the stock bit's crux terminatus design. If you choose a different shield shape, a simple inset rim and a one or two layer chapter symbol shouldn't give you too much trouble, either.

You can try what I do and print the shapes for shields onto heavy cardstock paper from your pc, cut them out and then saturate them with superglue to stiffen the paper. Works quite well and is easy.

Here's an example of a Storm Shield inspired by the Forgeworld Black Templar shields. I just added some costume chains and purity seals after it was done. If its too thin at this point and I want to give it more heft, I glue it right down to a piece of plasticard and then cut around it and sand the edges, using it as a template of sorts. Adding studs and rivets is also a good idea.

Here's an image of the template I created to make my own storm shields for Black Templar and Inquisition. i just cut out the shapes and glue them together in layers like a normal model.

Some examples of my scratchbuilt storm shields:

Spoiler:

I use "plasticard" (with quotation marks since it's not really plasticard and more of, well a "No Parking" plastic sign I bought in the bookstore) for those. I cut them out in different layers, attached them with superglue and added bits and battle damage. Nothing complicated, really.

As part of the Inquisition I will be stealing that model and melting it down so it's epicness may never shared again. You ask why? Because it has evoked extreme jealousy into the heart of this Inquisitor, and that is a sin, and so therefore this beauty must be purged.

Logic? Don't ask questions.

Thanks, I guess? Please don't melt my mini, it is a salvaged miscast Finecast model... and he has been through a lot of pain.

Here's another scratchbuilt SS, although it doesn't show well (the bald guy is holding it). It's the same shield as the one on the second photo of my first post (beside the hammer). As I have said, cheap flat plastic + superglue + cutting + bits = scratchbuilt storm shields.

I'm wondering if i should do tutorials for them? They're quite easy to do and a step-by-step wouldn't hurt, I think?
