This Is Where the Fish Lives

I have been slowly building an Ultramarine army but I recently got a little burnt out painting so much blue. I took a trip to my FLGS and grabbed some Grey Knights off the shelf and threw one together last night so I could spend my kid-free afternoon today painting it up.

This is what I came up with:

This was more of an experiment to see if I could make a decent GK. Overall I think I did a decent job, considering I'm new to the hobby. I was nervous to try some OSL, but if I get the courage at a latter date, I'll give it a shot. Looking at the picture, I found a mold line I missed. I might go back and tackle it later.

Yes, the sword was airbrushed, as was the whole model using a zenithal technique I saw in a tutorial here.

Tube rock is made from 1/2 inch cork. Basecoated in VMC German Grey. I drybrushed Codex Grey on that and put a light drybrush of Space Wolf Grey on that. The snow is made by mixing baking soda and PVA glue in a thick paste and spreading it on when I wanted it (I used a modeling tool to do it). I sprinkled some extra baking soda on top and left it to dry. I made the icecicle by melting a clear plastic rod from a flight stand with a candle and stretching it out. I affixed it to the base with gel superglue. It took about 15 minutes from start to finish and I think it turned out great.

Thanks for the tips! If I end up doing some snow bases I'll probably try this style. I like it over the static grass snow. Though the icicle...... I just see myself ending up with plastic burns

Initial success, or total failure.

You can also use hot glue to make them. Slowly push the trigger and drag the gun along something smooth. When it cools, find pieces tha look like icecicles and cut them!
