So just had my first ever Kill Team, 200pts fecking brilliant. Short and sweet yet just as rewarding as a full scale battle. So here's my question, what Kill Team list do you use or would like to try out just for fun.

For my game last night I had:

Landspeeder tornado with HB
7 man tac squad - 1HB, 1 plasma gun, 2 bolters, 3 BP/CCW.
HB had relentless, plasma gun had FnP and I gave one of the BP/CCW preferred enemy

It was only a friendly game with a mate so we weren't to bothered on pts going over. The amount of firepower I had was ridiculous but seriously good fun.

My mate was running a troop heavy list almost 30 models he kinda regretted it after I told him they all acted as solo but it was still fun. It went to the last man in the end.

So back to the main question, what Kill Team lists do you use or would like try for fun?

Firstly, under the old Kill Team rules, you're not allowed to have a Land Speeder. Under the new Kill Team rules, the Tactical Squad has to be legal under the Codex's guidelines, which means no heavy/special weapons until you're at ten men.

Under the new Kill-Team rules I'd probably try making a single Inquisitorial Henchmen warband just for the hell of it, mostly Death-Cult Assassins and special-weapon-armed Warrior Acolytes.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

Well if we're talking friendly games...

8 Khorne Berzerkers - Skull Champion w/ power weapon
Fluffy and for the blood god..

Also I haven't tried it yet but 7 Reavers with 2 Cluster Caltroops looks extremely fun (you can imagine your opponents face when you skip your shooting and assualt phases thanks to bladevanes)

I like running 3 Eldar Jetbikes with a Shuriken Cannon backed up by a Destructor Warlock. Very mobile with S6 long range firepower and a nice horde thinner.

A list that I've done remarkably well with is Harlequins with Kisses lead by a Power Weapon/Fusion Pistol Troupe Master and a Death Jester. Stealth, Infiltration, and Feel No Pain are my preferred rules.

Finally, Sternguards with two heavy bolters and a bunch of combi-weapons are pretty awesome, with Lightning Claws on the sarge. Relentless/Slow and Purposeful for the heavy bolters and Preferred Enemy or FNP on the Sergeant puts out a lot of pain.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

@AnomanderRake - My mistake forgot to say I play Black Templars. Also for skirmish games we're going to use the new rules and for campaign based missions it's going to be a mix of the two.

Hm, I'm actually supposed to play my first game of Kill Team on Friday, so I suppose I should take a crack at this. I tend to play fluff over competitiveness.

195 pts Space Wolves Kill Team
-----------------

Troops:
5 x Grey Hunters (flamer, Preferred Enemy) - 75 pts

Elites:
5 x Wolf Scouts (heavy bolter, Relentless) - 80 pts

Fast Attack:
5 x Fenrisian Wolves (Feel No Pain) - 40

That's actually pretty difficult, once you try. Points run out very quickly!

By "Old Kill Team Rules" Do you mean the one with the Klaxon Counters, Las-traps, Brute squads, Brute boss, etc? The good version that is the only way you should play killteam?

Did you mean the more complicated version that is harder to learn and takes longer to play?

Thanks for telling me what I should play, but I prefer the new version of kill teams much more.
30 minute game, simple rules, sans bullcrap stuff you need to learn. Just heroic individuals doing heroic things.

As for a lists, my two favorites are:
5 rangers, relentless
3 shining spears, preferred enemy, fnp

it has problems with hordes, so sometimes I run this list and just shoot and scoot around.

I'd like to try hording it up a whole bunch at the low points level. I don't know how effective it would be, but 29 shoota boyz and a nob with bosspole and heavy armor get you to 200. I wouldn't be sure what abilites to add, except FNP on the nob. But it's an orky list that has a Green Tide feel even at that points level. Never played this type, but I might try this out for fun!

I've fought something very similar to that, nobledukeofGork.
At one hand, it's easy to kill orks. On the other, theres just so many of them that any army without 15+ shots a turn can't whittle them down in time. My ranger+shining spears lost pretty bad just due to attrition. Not enough shots and the rangers couldn't move. My all jetbike list won though, as I wouldn't let the orks charge, and 16 twin linked str4 shots + 6 str6 shots were too much for the orks to handle.

On one hand it's good that each model is independent for you, because if the enemy charges an ork, they are now in the range of 10+ orks return charging them next turn.
On the other hand it's bad for you, because you can't generate cover by spreading out half the squad in terrain. The front exposed ranks get chewed up once they hit no mans land. Also it's bad because 30 models independently moved gets tiring when the other guy has 10.

Can you buy praetorians in squads of two? The current Kill Team rules require you to follow normal purchasing of units with the FOC exceptions...

Another problem is that Pinning does absolutely -all under the Kill Team rules unless you house rule it: make models within 1d6" of the pinned model (and likely dead, unless it's a multi-wound model) also take a Pinning Test. Now your Eldar Rangers are effective against hordes!

I run into the same problem with Harlequins in combat. If I'm only in b2b with a single model, I'm dishing out 4-5 attacks against it. It would be nice to consolidate into another combat if you have attacks remaining. Use two attacks, kill the guy, consolidate into CC with another model, use another 2 attacks, kill the guy, consolidate into another combat with no attacks left.

Personally I've always been partial to trying my luck with an Infantry Platoon.

PCS: Powerfist, 2x meltagun, 2x flamer
Infantry Squad 1: Plasma gun, autocannon
Infantry Squad 2: Plasma gun, autocannon

It'd take a while for them to knock me down to half-strength, that's for sure.

Also, as Rake mentioned, this would be a great way to muck around with Inquisitorial Retinues.

You can only put a special rule on one of the models, not the unit as a whole. So only one ranger would have relentless. On top of that a model can only take 1 special rule, you can't stack them.

@Gavin_thorne,
True, pinning is completely useless without a house rule. All in all, the rangers were pretty pathetic for their cost. But they are the coolest snipers in 40k (to me, at least) and I am powerless to swap them with something more viable like dire avengers.
As for your harlequins, I feel your pain. Assault is very sub-par compared to shooting in kill teams.

@harry,
When I wrote my lists, I just meant that one model in the rangers had relentless, and two different models in the shining spears had the other rules. One with FNP, another with preferred enemy.

I like your platoon list. 25 models, chilling in cover is pretty hard to take out quickly. Lots of shots at 24" to take down hordes, with some strategic flamers when they start packing in for assaults. Meltas for that jerk who brought a dread. Meltas + plasmas for that jerk who brings 5 terminators. Autocannons for maximum range tomfoolery, very important for light vehicles and speedy bikes.
It's got the guts to win, you should try it out and let us know how it goes.

I've never played a Kill Team match but have been eagerly considering it as a fun thing to play when there isn't time for a full game. It always seems like an easy way to get people into 40K, a 200pt army is easy to afford and can become a stepping stone for a full force.

The SoB Seraphim is my favorite looking unit in the game, but with nearly everything being pewter and the unit not being particularly amazing I just can't justify building a whole army for them. So I made this list:

Celestian Squad - 80

Seraphim Squad - 120
2x Dual Hand Flamers

It seems decent enough for friendly games, or games where vehicles aren't allowed.

...unless the contrary holds.

I don't think that there is anything easier to win against then 5 terminators, especially CC termies. When I took my Storm Trooper squad against them I lost one guy in return for a total party kill. However in the next match the Storm Troopers were annihilated by a DE list with bikers and a venom, hence my eagerness to take autocannons this time.

DemetriDominov wrote:Storm Troopers. Just.... Storm Troopers.

They're not bad if you play smart with them, but they really struggle against fast vehicles like skimmers and jetbikes. Their AP3 is rarely useful as you need to catch your opponent out in the open, which doesn't happen much. Most of the time you'll end up inflicting a wound with Str3, Ap3 that has just as much chance as killing that guy in cover as a Str3 Ap- lasgun.

Seraphim are hard to play with. They can close the distance between shooting armies quickly but that does mean a whole turn, or even two turns, out of cover. It worked against my Storm Troopers, but frankly that was the worst shooting rolls I'd ever had in a long time. Even average rolls would have decimated them, and a it is they only barely took me out. Personally I'd drop the Celestians to make room for a whole Sister of Battle squad, as you should probably be going for weight in numbers rather than combat effectiveness.

I ran this in a Kill Team tournie and won:

*3 Bases of Scarab
-(1x) Eternal Warrior, (1x) Preferred Enemy, (1x) Feel No Pain

*Immortals (x5)
-Tesla Carbines

*Warriors (x5)

It was ruled that reanimation protocols still operated as long as one model of that type was still on the field (because Necrons would blow without it... unless you're a jerk and went to Wraiths.) Was fun. Beat my last opponent with immortals standing back up and gunning a bunch of gaunts dead and him failing his "below 50" Ld test.

Also, I let someone borrow this and he almost placed had I not had to beat my own list to go on!

*Lone Wolf (Fleet... LULZ!)
-TDA, SS, CF

*Grey Hunters (x6)
-PG (Relentless), MotW (Preferred Enemy)

A Fleet lone wolf in a 200 point game is absolutely MEAN. I have seen one absorb the firepower of a guard gunline for two turns in 1500+ matches.

1x Warrior Acolyte with power armor and a plasma rifle (feel no pain)
2x crusaders (Prefurred enemy and furious charge)

That sounds nasty. But horde armies will probably have you on the run there, especially if they have any shooting.

My mate tried this very list... it went to the last man with my list

Landspeeder tornado with HB
7 man tac squad - 1HB, 1 plasma gun, 2 bolters, 3 BP/CCW.
HB had relentless, plasma gun had FnP and I gave one of the BP/CCW preferred enemy

He got a lucky few shoots with the big shoota at the landspeeder and me failing my cover on it...

This is my mates next list he's gonna try

5 Lootas
1 Mekboy w/ Rokkit Launcha
3 Deffkoptas

Bang on 200 I think, no idea on the spec rules tho
S7 Range 48" is kinda scary (thankfully they can't shoot for )

Any ideas for a counter? Using vanilla codex this time round.

Was thinking this might be a laugh: 195pts

Legion of the Damned Squad
4 Legion of the Damned Squad, Bolt Pistol x4, Bolter x2; Meltagun - FnP, Heavy Bolter - Stealth
1 Sergeant Bolter, Combi-Plasma - Scout

Slow moving.. Yes but able to absorb a huge amount of shots.

My chaos marine list is
5 marines with mark of nurgle (aspiring champion with power weapon as leader and FNP special rule)
10 cultists with a heavy stubber (cultist champion has fleshbane and heavy stubber has relentless)

The cultists charge in, while the heavy stubber moves about and provides cover fire, while the cultist champion looks for characters to kill and earn boons. the marines act as support with the aspiring champion taking out elites as he is armed with a power axe.

Nid list is
3 warriors with 1 venom cannon(leader and FNP) 2 deathspitters(1 with it will not die, the other with armourbane)
6 genestealers

2 of the warriors are focused on staying alive as long as possible and just being where they are most needed, whilst the 3rd is there for any enemy armour, on average 3 shots with armour penetration of 12 he should be able to handle anything in games of this size. the genestealers work independantly and pick off models from the edges of the formation, jumping in and out of cover.
