well, it happened. CISPA has been passed. What do you think? I am going to exchange program in a month so I will not feel the full effects at the start but what do you guys(and girls) think?
Well it's a US law so i won't be affected...
Though even if i was i wouldn't be massively put out.

I'm not the type to post "I don't care" in a thread, but seriously, it's my only reaction.
If the internet changes in some sort of fundamental way, I suppose I'd find something else to do while I'm supposed to be working/doing homework. Also, and I'm sure I'll catch heat for this, but I'm not opposed to figuring out ways to deal with Cyber Attacks and all that jazz. I do have a bit of an authoritarian streak, though.

I am very political so sorry if this whole "political" thing upsets people. I stick to bills and events rather than listening to things about internet hackers. Also this is the responce? Im suprised, most people I know hate these bills.

Most people you know probably haven't read the bills.
This reminds me of a song.

Most people dont use myspace and they still says its junk. I will agree however, a large ammount of people think on the lines of "oh facebook and wikipedia are talkng about it ill check in!" where the bill was more pro big internet sites.

At the risk of repeating myself:

It passed in the House, still has to go through Democratic Senate, and Obama said he'd Veto it.
So I'm kinda meh.
It would never come to a vote. I don't think the Senate has actually voted on something thats non crisis in years. What the hell do they even do? Is anyone even there?

They removed rules regarding sharing information about potential intellectual property theft from the final version of the bill, so at least it has that going for it.
Obama's threatened to veto it BTW.
The main problem I have with it is that it has no real rules on what they DO with the data after it's been collected.

I dislike CISPA because it severely limits people's privacy. Some people argue that the Constitution never guarantees people the right to privacy. That's true. The Constitution also never says you have a right to defecate, but that doesn't mean the government is allowed to shove a plug up yer butt.

How does it limit your right to privacy? It allows private cybersecurity entities to share evidence with the Federal Government.
It is worth pointing out that 'evidence' = Data these entities ALREADY collect and that they share it to stop/solve cyber attacks/hacking that have significant costs to businesses and the Gov't (which means they have a cost to us tax payers).

Were that the only thing it did. What that portion does is allow big business enterprises (and their pocket security firms (or the other way around)) to share your personal info with the federal government without your consent or permission. Given the ubiquity of such databses and the lack of a realistic alternative to them for citizens and the quiet nature of the transaction between entities it essentially gives the government carte blanche to gather all forms of info about US citizens to be used for whatever nefarious purposes they dream up tomorrow. The right to privacy was already all but dead for citizens but this is still a pretty big brick through that window.

They can't do that now?
They have to subpoena the records in a fairly public fashion (unless they do it illegally which they do sometimes).

No, if the government wants to compel production of the records, they have to subpoena them. But if the company cooperates, the government doesn't need to subpoena them.
I don't see anything in the bill that eliminates the subpoena requirement to compel records.

But it protects both entities from being sued, does it not?
