So Dakkanauts, I'm looking to setup a regular game of Descent with some family/friends once again, and two of us are involving our girlfriends.

Neither are big gamers, but they've played board games in the past(traditional family ones and recent Last Night on Earth). Neither have a huge interest in the Descent style universe, but they're big fans of Harry Potter and some of the more traditional fantasy books and movies.

My question is, any tips on helping them learn the rules?

Descent isn't the easiest of games to pick up and play so I'm wondering how to make it easier for them. One of them has played before but we often ended up playing for her because she'd forget options for play and the more complicated parts eluded her.

I was thinking perhaps of creating some flash cards with certain situations or options? Breaking down the rules into something more simple? I figure once they've got the base rules they'll play no problem. It's not like we have to tell them how to play monopoly or any of the more commonplace board games.

Descent is pretty damn intense for the casual gamer. You don't have any of the recent D&D dungeon crawl boardgames, like Castle Ravenloft, or Legend of Drizz't? I don't know if a casual player is ever going to get into Descent. Not to be pessimistic, but that's my experience.

While it takes much long to get ready, do to the models, they need to be put together. Super Dungeon Explore It a very non-gamer friendly game, and really cute (a plus for most girls). The rule book could be better writing so I would play a game with some of your game friends to work out the kinks, before you play with your family/friends.

Edit: Forgot to put the game name in.

Peter: As we all know, Christmas is that mystical time of year when the ghost of Jesus rises from the grave to feast on the flesh of the living! So we all sing Christmas Carols to lull him back to sleep.
Bob: Outrageous, How dare he say such blasphemy. I've got to do something.
Man #1: Bob, there's nothing you can do.
Bob: Well, I guess I'll just have to develop a sense of humor.

I would also recommend starting with one of the D'n'D boardgames. Those are very straightforward to learn, and co-operative.
