Subject: GW to change it's "core merchandise"?

Hi!
Yesterday I went to the local toy store that happens to have some GW stuff to buy exactly one pot of a brownish color. As I paid, the clerk said "That's gonna be 2 Euros". I say "No it should be 3" (I don't want to rip them off - the next GW-selling store is half an hour drive). The clerk says "No, a lot of the GW stuff is 30% off. We're gonna get new colors soon, and GW is about to change it's core merchandize so we also have 30% off on all the stuff on the stairs and some more". So I pay the 2 Euros for the paint and go back to the stairs. They indeed sell a lot of GW boxes for 30% off - and *new* stuff. Land Raider Redeemer, Stormraven, Dark Angels Battleforce, Terminators, Sang Guard, SM Scouts, a lot of Necron Boxes (NOT second wave) and a whole lot of Warhammer Fantasy. On the other hand, stuff like Chimera and Drop Pods are not discounted.
As 30% discount is cheaper than the cheapest online store I know of. I used that as a justification and ended up buying
Land Raider Crusader/Redeemer - 5 Euros cheaper than waylandgames
Stormraven - 5 Euros cheaper than waylandgames
Assault Terminators - 2.5 Euros cheaper than waylandgames
and some Necrons for a friend - also cheaper.
Now apart from gloating about being so lucky (and a bit broke - I just had money for a pot of paint), does this make any sense? I see GW ditching some units for 6th edition. But getting rid of a Storm Raven, Land Raider, first wave Necrons, new Blood Angels models? Does that make any sense?
Cheers,
Kosta

Nope. It doesn't. I suspect the clerk was misinformed.

I have a strange feeling they'll introduce a sprue for of SMs and make it something for C: SM as well.

I know most of the FLGS I frequent have a consistent 30% mark down. For me, that puts GW products at just about what they're actually worth in man hours and manufacturing costs.

I can't see them doing a massive change of the core models like that, especially all at once. The clerk was probably wrong.

When a local toy salesman says that GW is changing from a miniature company to a fastfood chain and selling all its old stuff, it must be true, right?

Now I don't know anything about the actual models being revamped but I do know that when GW came out the new paints my FLGS did put a sale on all of his old paints to make room for the new batch he had coming in.

@SGrimhart: Yeah that probably makes sense. I think they had waaaaay too much stuff on their shelves and they need to make space

GW could be changing around/updating their inventory codes though.
I remember this happening with fairly decent frequency when I worked at the local GW store before it closed up. All the 'current' product that was about to be re-coded would be taken off the shelf and declared 'dead product' as the sales system would no longer recodnise it after HQ did the till updating.
We'd be tasked with boxing up all the dead product and getting it ready for shipping back to HQ. Occationally, HQ stiffed us and we'd be left with a couple big boxes of product we couldn't sell... Luckily, it simply ment an early Christmas for the staff after having the crap sitting around for 8 months!

our indipendant retailer here also sells GW stock at around 25-35% off as normal pricing, and when the new paints came out we got 2 for 1 on the old stuff. i think those non gw stores just try to sell and move product at cost to keep business going. im not sure but i think they get bonus or whatever based on volume, not actual sales price.
i am just guessing at that tho...
