Its finally been officially announced. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/05/03/the-elder-scrolls-online-confirmed-for-2013/#comments.
personally the only good thing that I can take from this announcement is that the project lead was involved with DAoC so there is a faint possiblity that it may be a decent mass PvP game. Its much more likly though that it will be yet another WoW clone just like SWTOR.

Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

Not sure how I feel about this. Though being the Elder scrolls junkie that I am, I'll probably pick it up if I can get around to building a new comp by then.

My one rpg that I play is going to be ruined. I hate MMO's. I have tried a bunch and not one has kept me playing more then a week. I will try it just out of curiosity, but It will be kinda lame I'm sure.

Its not being made by Bethesda so it will have little or no impact on future single player games.

My initial reaction to this was "God damn it."
Edit: At least Zenimax is doing it so Bethesda can work on other, better projects. Only reason to touch this game will be to explore Tamriel.

And besides, Skyrim only kept me entertained for 2 weeks.

THREE FACTION PVP?
DAOC DEVELOPERS?
This is looking good...
Edit: Apparently the guy who wrote the story for ME1 and ME2 is doing the storyline for this game, and that can only be a positive.

How is this looking good? DAOC was a steaming pile of gak.
Three faction PVP is nothing new either.
The most deciding factor for this game to be in any way interesting, is the combat. Looking at both DAOC and elder scrolls combat.... I don't expect anything good to come from this. If it's a WoW clone it'll fall flat on it's face, if it's just the Skyrim combat.. same deal.

DAOC was the best PVP MMO ever made - period. That's all I care about.
Mass Effect quality story, Elder Scrolls background, and DAOC PVP? Recipe for success.
3 factions will be...what?
Aldmeri Dominion, Imperial Empire, and....the Argonian Kingdom that has risen up now?

Supposedly it will use the same engine as SWTOR so its not looking good.

Interest levels in the negative. The only MMO I'm casually interested in is GW2, and that's because its free to play after initial purchase business model.

I won't argue with that. Planetside was an excellent game.
The fact that this game DOES use the SWTOR engine is unsettling. That engine is terrible and brought me many problems with SWTOR.
If they haven't fixed that engine, then the game won't be possible for me to buy - regardless of who is making it.

It's set 1000 years before Skyrim apparently.
Skyrim takes place in 201 4E. 3rd Era lasted 433 years. 2nd Era lasted 897 years. Will probably take place between 200-500 2nd Era then.
If it takes place exactly 1000 years before in 366 3E then.
Orsinium is still a territory.
Dark Brotherhood was recently founded. (Potentially meet the living Night Mother?)
The Akaviri are ruling most of Tamriel.
Tiber Septim has not been born.

Being set in the 2nd Era, its probably going to have Talos' primordial empire, the ancient elven civilizations, and the Akavari as factions.

I hope they try less to make it like an MMO and more to make it like a great Elder Scrolls game that just so happens to have some multiplayer aspects.

I have now lost all interest. The odd feature sounds interesting, namely the hidden quest lines, but aside from that it all sounds painfully generic.

Rofl, I can see nothing good come from this. The age of WoW is already ending and people are discovering that WoW's mechanics are utterly outdated and new mmo's are vastly improving on it in every way. WoW clones will soon be a thing of the past.

WoW's mechanics where outdated before they even made the game. It's rather sad how little innovation their is with mmos. Making a mmo based on the elder scrolls should be the best thing ever. Unless they do something stupid like making another WoW clone with a new skin.

Well you have to consider several things.
1) MMOs can be potentially profitable moreso than single player RPGs. As a result, companies are moving towards MMOs or are selling tons of overpriced DLCs to make up for the fact that video game prices have stayed steady around $50-$60 for a long time despite increased operating costs.
2) Bethesda isn't even making it, Zenimax Online is...so Bethesda will continue working on TESVI (I hope).
3) Thanks to Oblivion's success, TES has gone from being unknown outside of nerd circles to being possibly the most popular western RPG series there is. Even non RPGers play Skyrim. Everyone freaking plays it. It's absurd how much crossover appeal it has... I can't find exact sales figures for it, but I found an article stating that it had sold over 10 million copies by December 2011.
