The Night Lords Soul Hunter and Blood Reapers are fun reads. I really liked Helsreach. Aaron DB is a great Black Library addition, second only to Dan Abnet in my opinion.

If you like Inquisitors, I liked the Eisenhorn Omnibus.

The Night Lords novels are the best books BL has ever put out. I read a lot of sci-fi, both licensed and not, and the Night Lords books are novels good enough that I can actually think of them as good fiction first and Warhammer books second.

Brothers of the Snake left me extremely cold, and I didn't really dig the part that's obviously 300 but with Space Marines. It's the only Abnett book I didn't like.

Can't say anything about Dan Abnett, but ADB is seconded without a doubt. He does the Templars justice in Helsreach.

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

I might pick up a few books if I were you since if you're like me you can burn through BL books very quickly. Also, Amazon typically has them used for about half price. The Ultramarines Omnibus, while unimpressive, was a good amount of content for 5 bucks used.

Also known as the book where Aaron Dembski-Bowden stole my heart and never let go. It's hard to find copies of it now though; trawl eBay and Amazon for it.

I swear, if he's at Adepticon next year I might have to go just to ask him to sign my copy of Cadian Blood.

That poor book has seen so much wear and tear though.

Are you a fan of Chaos Space Marines?
Storm of Iron~ Follows the Iron Warriors and their siege of a fortress. Its fantastic for actual real character development.

The Night Lords books above are also good.

Fifteen Hours is the life of a Imperial Guardsman which in depth describes first taste in combat, along with the average live expectancy. Its a great noval.

Minor note:

"Fifteen Hours" is not something to be considered the 'life of a Guardsman' by and large. It's the 'life of a Guardsman who is thrown into an impossible situation courtesy of bureaucratic shenanigans'.

The Blood Angels Omnibus is a great read.

Outside of that:

One would assume he was asking for 40k related books, hence it being in 40k discussions. If he just wanted book recommendations, there's an off topic section for a reason I suppose. Granted most of your suggestions are very good so I can't fault you too much

Another vote for ADB, I have yet to be disappointed and I have very high standards when it comes to fiction. I struggle to finish a lot of the black library stuff I read but his is excellent.

Well I did include the BA Omni.

And The art of war is about war, and Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy is about space travel, so they relate to 40K

The Zombie Survival Guide is about zombies so it relates to Warhammer as a whole, albeit Fantasy.

The only ones that are a stretch to relate to Warhammer are the Shining and Dune. The Shining could be modified slightly to fit right into a remote winter base on an agri world. Dune, I guess it has tanks and war as well.

Dune is the book out of those that is closest to a 40k book, since GW lifted the setting and terminology of 40k from Dune and Judge Dredd chiefly.
