Veteran Wolf Guard Squad Leader

So I am starting my scone space wolves army and I'm basing them of Bran Redmaws great comapy. Now in imperial armour there is conflicting background saying that wolves prefer to go bare headed to show strength and courage, whereas all the images have them helmeted. Now I have read battle of the fang and it seems in that story many wear helmets due to the cold as it is that cold that space wolves can't stand it. With my latest batch I have modeled some bare headed and others not, should I model on helmetes mag-locked to their belts to show that grey hunters would not go into battle without helmets but are not actually wearing them? Thoughts would be welcome and appreciated

I wasn't sure were to post this, if it needs moving please tell me and I'll happily move it

They tend to go bareheaded because many of them prefer to use their own senses over the machine senses of the suit (and they do have better than human senses without the gear).
You also get a more intimidating fanged snarl with a helmet off. It helps if you can see the teeth.

Ok so helmets I shouldn't include to many helmed men. Should i though model them mag-locked to their belts with their grenades or not?
I am asking because I don't know if it will look right or just be disproportionate in any way, but thanks for the feed back chromedog

It really is down to personal preference, but what I do is have every Space Wolf - whether Wolf Lord, Wolf Guard, Grey Hunter or Long Fang - with a bare head, as this allows them to use their own senses as well as making them more inspiring / easier to identify - as a Space Wolf, you wouldn't want a situation where you perform a truly epic act (say taking down a Herald of Khorne in melee), only for the Wolf Lord to not know at a glance exactly who performed that feat!
The sole exception to this rule is for my Lone Wolves, as they feel they do not have a personal identity or any reason to aspire to glory until and unless they have absolved the sin of outliving their pack.
Oh - it's worth mentioning that any other Space Marines I do are actually sensible and wear their helmets! With the exception of Librarians (as I figure a helmet could interfere with their powers,) every Marine in any other army I do goes helmeted. Including Sergeants, Captains, whoever.

^ I like your style.
Like the poster above me, none of my Wolves wear helmets (except Urik, but his helmet is unique wargear). The bits in the Wolf Guard and Space Wolf Pack boxes exude personality, and the bare heads really lend that savage, individualistic tone to the army. That's why my army goes helmet-less. It's just one more of those small differences that set SW apart from other chapters. I think armies with helmets look good too, it's just not the way I wanted to portray my great company.
It does take a little creativity if you don't like re-using the same head in your army, though.

I went for a bit of both... My Blood Claws are all wearing helmets. Everyone else, some have helmets on, some have them clipped to their belts, and some (mostly those with more extreme hair or beards that wouldn't conceivably fit into a helmet in the first place) just don't have one at all.

Thanks for the feedback guys, i really apreciate that. As promised i'm posting some photos of the test model, firstly by himself and secondly with the rest of the squad from the back to give you an idea of what it looks like in the squad These two are the ones of the guy by himself In this one the guys with the helmet on the belt is the one thrid from the left in. Im looking for feedback on what this looks like, whether it needs changing or too out of proportion etc... Thanks again Young Logan

Looks fine to me my friend
i find the proportions aren't as bad as people make out if you use the parts creatively as you have above

Not a single model in my Space Wolves has a helmet on because I wanted them to stand out in my playgroup. I didn't want them to look like Blood Angels or Dark Angels painted light blue. The bare-headed look is a little more difficult to paint but it fits with the Wolves' feral berserker fluff.

As of right now, all my wolves have helmets (don't really like painting faces). Eventually though, I'm gonna go the non-helmet route when I do my mark of wulfen models.

Hey I am doing Bran Redmaw also! I have most bare headed in my army and maybe 1-2 per squad with helmet if that. I do like the guy with the helmet on his belt neat idea. I would do a couple but not all.

I have a 1000pts space wolves army on the shelf ready to be started as my next project. The whole idea behind the army is to be over the top space marines. I'm quiet pleased that I've managed to field the entire army without helmets. For the wolves this looks great. (and using the wolf guard kits you get plenty of heads to do it).
