Hi Dakka,

I'm painting a Valkyrie atm and I'd love to get the same chevron effect as you see on the roads of GB, on the back of various vans.

I want to get this on the back door of my Valk but I've a feeling this could ruin a paintjob if not perfect.

So how would you do this? Have you done it before? Then please share your secrets!

(I'm talking more about technique than colours, I need to achieve that clean triangular look and hope you have some tips!)

Thanks

Inboud...

I'll assume you mean the yellow and black chevrons (like at the top of Dakka).

Your best bet is masking in order to achieve a crisp edge.
Paint your yellow first, using whatever combination of layers suits you.
Then use masking tape (regular tape risks peeling of your paintjob) to cover the areas you want to remain yelow.
Layer black over the entire area (tape and all) until you're happy. Then, simply peel off the masking tape, and there you have it- crisp chevrons.
You can then use a rust effect on any areas which have 'bled' into the yellow.

I personally wouldn't paint the entire back doow of the Valk this way, but instead on the lips of the back ramp. Looks more realistic IMO.

good luck, and post pics!

Good idea - have no idea why the pics don't work!

Think I will go with just painting the area around the door in chevrons, it makes more sense when you think about it!

Thanks

There is a chevron transfer, you're correct. Trouble with that is that it's incredibly specific and not really suitable for my needs.

I'm also terrified of transfers, too much of a gamble in my hands!

Then id use masking tape as suggested by CadianXV. You MUST paint yellow first as it wont show up against black.

Or alternatively do a black undercoat and use the new cermite white foundation paint to get a nice smooth white to put the yellow over.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

I'll try and finish the entire Valk on Tuesday night, once my last 2 assignments are in.

I'll post the pics up on my blog (sig!) and hopefully it won't suck too much! I already goofed when I didn't blow dust off the thing before airbrushing - really need to clear away some space for these fething models.

I've use the paintshop and printer way.
Find or make the inage the sacle to the size you need, print on normal papar, glue on with PVA, glaze with 5050% PVA and water. let dry, wash with the base colour of you build than add a wash of black.
ie; like on this of one of my bits;
