Well, I've been unusually productive as of recently (which is good!) but I've been mostly building Marines (which is less good, but still good!) and this week I got some of my primary army done (which is great!) in between playing Mass Effect 3 (which is... you know).
So, here we are. I already have 3 Necron Destroyers, which are pretty poorly painted. I wanted to see if I could do better. Also, although my Necrons still use trusty Boltgun Metal as the base coat (Who doesn't like a nice BM?) I have slowly been adding different colors to distinguish different roles. While my army now looks less like the deathbots they used to be and more like mechanized Skittles (+2 delicious save), so be it. Since "blue" in my army represents royalty, and "red" represents passionless killing, I went with red for my Destroyer Lord and 2 Heavy Destroyers.
The Lord's primary weapon is a Staff of Light or possibly a Warscythe, depending on what I need for that game and how closely my nephew read my army list if I get the drop on his armor. I modelled it to represent either option. I used a recast 1/8th rod in ruby red, which was a leftover from my similarly-minded Deathmarks. The dog hair I didn't notice until now does not, so far as I know, confer any in-game advantages. Perhaps if Allies really does come back in 6th.
He also has some LED's
up ins. Of course.
Wiring this was both simple and very tedious. I like wrapping wire for it's thin gauge, as the other wire I use has too much girth (that's not what she said) but it's like... plated with chrome or something. So I needed to scrape the ends of the wire with my hobby knife, which went well - only one serious wound. If I do this again I'll see if I can find wire in the same gauge that's not chromed out or whatever that is.
I'm not too thrilled with the final effect, the SMD LED's I used were very small but just not bright enough at all. Along with different wire, I might just use regular LED's next time, there really is lots of space in here anyway. I'm also consider clamping the body sidewise and filling the voids with clear resin... we'll see. It might be good enough now. I still have such a giant mountain of grey plastic it's pretty hard to motivate me to make minor tweaks to already finished models which could ruin them if there is a leak somewhere...
So, the heavy destroyers.
All of them have the same color scheme, of course. Not only are they, as I said, like-minded as relentless professional killers, an added bonus is that the Necron Destroyer Lord can be swapped to a regular Destroyer I'd I'd prefer that instead. In fact, they are super heavily magnetized to allow whatever configuration might be most handy:
HOW DO THEY WORK?
The guns are scratchbuilt. I got a bag of brass...
junk from Michaels. It was full of all sorts of rods and tubes and stuff. It took half an hour while they tried to figure out the price on it, and eventually I rather thing someone just made up the price - $10 even - but I think it was worth it. Anyway, I made it by wrapping some heavy wire around a 3/32 brass rod, and then gluing some brass bits to the sides. The middle tan part is 1/8th Tamiya tape. I then made a mold of it and cast a pair. Here is the master below:
I hope these guys do well on the battlefield. I've been doing pretty poorly with my Necrons vs Guard, and a large part of that is because I literally have zero anti-armor units. This should help somewhat. I also have a barge and an Ark which are both pending, along with all the new stuff I ordered from Wave 2 the other day... but that's a future thread.
The Ends!
