Is an honor guard just cannon fodder/insurance for the HQ? When I field them or an opponent fields them they are gone by the second turn. I was wondering if the honor guard is worth it's points or if I would be better off choosing to take scouts with bolt pistols as more souls to die a nameless death for my HQ.

What book are you playing out of?

I have a nice little CC honor guard squad for my BA army. Sure, points are better spent elsewhere, but my Reclusiarch deserves to fight with the best!

What? It's a blue ultramarine head which is normal SM codex. Vulcan Legion is my own chapter.

They are bad assault termies. In a raider if you have elite choices full.

Command squads can do the other jobs better. As in it can be quite useful not to have a raider with a cc unit. Or you may need a drop pod or another razorback, so they are bought just to get transport.

Honor Guard? They're a massive point sink. Skip them.

Yeah, it's sad how much worse honor guard are than command squads. Were I looking for an HQ dude with a retinue, I'd downgrade the chapter master to a captain so that I could take the better retinue. Orbital bombardment is a small price to pay for the apothecary and ability to take combi/special weapons, and storm shields.

You're not the only person, but they are somewhat weak at their designated role. You invest in elite melee troops so they can beat other people's elite melee troops (or at least hold them up). Against elite melee troops (like Incubi) Honour Guard die just as easily as normal marines. If you take honour guard and assault terminators then it has to be asked, why not just take more assault terminators?
