I'm sorry. What the feth was that you said?
Gypsies...
That's probably not a particularly nice way to refer to them actually...
But yeah, i'd lay odds on it being down to 'travelers'

In England they call 'em gypsies, they don't mean the same as the Roma Gypsies, they mean Irish Travellers, or as we call 'em, Knackers or Tinkers.
Deal with them for an extended period, and I reckon you'd find the appellation of "scum" often (though not always) fits.
When I worked down the port I used to have to deal with them. Horrible. They'd chuck rubbish in over the counter at me, beat their wives in public, attack anyone who criticised them. When they moved their vans in, we'd give them a skip to dump stuff in. They ignored it and dumped everything from rotten meat to full nappies to car parts on the ground for someone else to pick up.
Travellers in the UK were recently convicted for keeping slaves in their camp.
I've had hundreds of interactions with travellers and I can count on the fingers of one hand the number that were pleasant. I could go on listing outrageous anecdotes all day.
The really depressing part is that they actually do have horrible lives full of deprivation and a forced outsider status, but it is a lifestyle choice for them. There are plenty of programs to help them settle or to help them receive education.
In short Auston, until you've lived it, don't assume you know what's going on.

America seems like a better environment for that culture in a way- less densely populated, more places for them to go where they're not right up on top of other people.

However Americans, in general, are far more protective of their land. If gypsies set up camp on an Englishmans land he'll complain to the police who will do very little whereas half the Americans on this forum would pull out their arsenal and kick them out.

Well in Mels case I would fully expect gunfire. Just for being within 20 miles.

My paternal grandfather was a traveller, he spoke the cant and on more than one occasion when we needed help "cousins" I'd never met showed up from Texas to help. I know exactly who and what you are talking about. Luckily my family didn't have to live the life, and neither did you. Your dealings with the travellers doesn't excuse your own bigotry and racism. I've had less than congenial dealings with people of very stripe including Brits, that wouldn't allow me to refer to them as scum and be acceptable; except apparently on Dakka.

Looking at the state of some of the CV's that get handed into my workplace, they are probably helping out in the English Language department....
