I just purchased a Malagor model (Metal, not Fail Cast) and I actually like how the model it self looks.

The rule set does not seem horrible for 350 points(Though he is still expensive IMHO)

But I am considering putting him to use.

What is the general consensus on him from the members of this forum.

I'm thinking of trying him in a game this weekend. His downfall is really the lack of any save, which makes him a character that shouldn't see close combat unless theres no other choice.

One idea that i've heard is that he can travel in a unit to protect him then fly out and blast away with spells from the side where he can't be targeted.

For his special rules to really be beneficial, he needs to be close to friends/foes. His toughness isn't amazing and again, with the lack of saves, it's kind of risky.

He's definitely a skilled caster and does look awesome.

Well the lack of save is a consideration, but it is clear he is not intended to go toe to toe with enemy heros. I am going fluffy with him any way so he will be doing battle along with Khazrak the one eye who is very much intended to go toe to toe with enemy champions.

Judging by his rule set, it is clear that he is intended to be delegated to a support role.

The model for him is fantastic, but the lack of save does scare me; looks like a PROS only caster.

I have the model but have always ran him as a Great Bray. But I've always wanted to use him. Just never got around to it.

I've sold so many armies. :(

Support role? His abilities are 6". He's got to be very close to the enemy and very close to this front line troops who are rolling primal fury. That said, he still gets LOS if in units and he can pass a lot of stat-tests for uber spells. I don't think he's worth the points unless you really synergize them with like some terror bombing or other LD tests and/or have a whole lot of guys nearby to frenzy.

Finally got to try him in a game. Won't lie, it didn't go great. He stayed in his bestigor bunker until he took off and jumped behind 2 enemy units and tried to throw a purple sun across a dwarven horde. He failed to cast, then stood there until a giant rock landed on him.

It's really tough to justify his 350 points when he can't even dodge a big rock coming towards him. With no armour or even a ward, hes too risky to even let loose later in the game because of the large amount of warmachines that certain armies can take.

LOL! You did it wrong!

I got to use him yesterday. I went with a fluffy army(for fun mostly) Malagor is currently working with Khazrak the one eye.

I put Malagor in a group group of 20 Gors, and took lore of Beasts. Khazrak and his Bestigor Bunker marched infront(with another gor herd next to him, my outflankers threw the enemy formation into disarray THANKS TO RE ROLLS) Malagor litirally DOMINATED the magic phase, with the enemy wizard unable to stop him, amd Malagor using lore of beasts to buff units, and hit the enemy with offensive and debuff spells(I took lore of beasts).

So he works very well. I don't think i'd have cut him loose into the open unless I was very confident.

PS

I ended up charging a unit of flanking men at arms(had a lord embedded with them or something) They issued Challenge, Malagor giggled and went to the back of the formation, and buffed his unit to victory.

This character is no warrior, but an underhanded dangler punch.

Did they change the challenge rules? Last I played your opponent gets to choose who is sent to the back. Unless you didn't have a champion or your opponent chose poorly.

Also can you buff units while hiding in the back of a unit after declining a challenge?

The unit is only prohibited from using his Ld(unless you're skaven)

Other abilities will still work.

And if you only have 1 character in the unit, he has to be the one sent back if he refuses a challange.

Right. Champs can't be sent to the rear... Unwise to challenge if there's only a caster who will clearly refuse.

Thanks for the clarifications. Definitely a mistake to issue the challenge.
