Hello, my circle of board gamming friends have decided to get into 40k, and I like the style of Imperial Guard. My friends and I are all pretty competitive, so I've been trying to read up on what does and doesn't work from various sources on the interenet. I know that there is no substitute for actual game experience, but I'd rather not pay money for models that I end up not using after a couple of games. Anyway, here's what I came up with. Feel free to tear this list to pieces.

*Decided to just edit the OP, so people don't have to scroll down and search for the changes.*

Your HQ choice is mispriced. Change the Vets with Plasma to Melta and you'll be on the mark.

Standard list, nothing new here.

Netlist copied, netlist pasted.

What do you want from us, to reinvent the netlist for you?

I hadn't realized that. My bad, still new to this. So let's change things up a bit.

Lot more surprises, and the Astropath helps bring them in. Added the AC's to help with transports due to less ML's.There's a lot less armor now, though...

dont get me wrong, the majority of the web would suggest what you posted as the way to go and THE only way there is.

ive never used harker so i dont really know how would be the best to use him, but i have marbo and he is awesome. bring him in a few inches away from your enemy and throw that demo charge on them. he usually doesnt survive but if he gets into CC he is pretty good there too.

you have aot of AV12 which might help in saturation, but that lonely manticore can become a target real fast. if you decide to run this list make sure you have it in some sort of cover.
i would probablly suggest switching 1-2 of the vets back to meltas to save a few points like giving the maticore camo netting to help its survivablity.

think about keeping the heavy flamers on your chimeras, you have a lot of AT mostly at short range and not so much anti infantry aside from the blast and ML. the plasmas will help against meq, but you might have trouble with horde numbers so the tamplates are needed.

i really dont know where else to go, its a pretty standard mech list but not as much as your first one was. good luck and happy hunting!

First off I think you misunderstood us. When we said this list is nothing new, recycled, etc we're not saying that as a necessarily BAD thing. It's just a very common list and a lot of competitive veteran players have seen it and know how to deal with IG's AV12 spam in general. I think the changes to your list have made it more individual, but worse.

Harker is great for getting those rear armor shots or delaying enemy troops. Infiltrate him on an enemy's flank and the enemy either has to deal with him or has to suffer many turns of side/rear armor shots, thus Plasma's range mixed with an AC make him pretty great. Sit still in cover and you get that 24" range mixed with Stealth USR.... mmmm. If you face an army that goes full reserve he's still alright to put him midfield but not as great.

Plasma spam on vets makes them kill themselves too often and 15 points on a gun is pretty tough for a guardsmen. Unless you have a specific role for them (Like with Harker or in an outflanking Valkyrie) it's just not worth the points. I think Melta is better. +1 S, +1 on damage table, plus the melta rule (duh) is pretty good. I originally loved the idea of plasma over melta, but after putting into practice it isn't as good on paper as it is in practice. Plus melta IDs Nobs and Paladins, which in my metagame is VERY important (I can't wait to play the tyranid player who brings lots of Tyranid Warriors. It'll be glorious)

I agree that the lonely Manticore is gonna get nuked and that HF's on the Chimeras are probably still a better bet. It would be sensible to give it camo netting, though I'll rarely say that.
