Hi,
Here is an Imperial Guard Chimera I have completely scratch built from paper, cardboard and a chop-stick (and lots of super glue!).
What do you think?

Perhaps because paper models cost about fifty pence, and plasticard ones perhaps four pounds. I've seen people build an entire armoured company for less than the price of a single Leman Russ
Some also do it for the pleasure and challenge of crafting the model, there are a few chaps like that on the net and their selfbuilds are indistinguishable from a GW model.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.
"Your society's broken, so who should we blame? Should we blame the rich, powerful people who caused it? No, lets blame the people with no power and no money and those immigrants who don't even have the vote. Yea, it must be their fething fault." - Iain M Banks

"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal |

Colour me impressed. Amongst an army I doubt the casual observer would notice it was any different from any other Chimera. Nice one!

Thanks!
@ victor.IG- Yodhrin hit the nail right on the head! I could afford one, maybe even two Chimeras, but that leaves me with no money and a rather unimpressive army. However if I scratch build them I could essentially have as many tanks as I like!
I do also really enjoy building them, though the lazy side of me would much rather just skip the work and pick up a GW plastic kit. Unfortunately my wallet thinks otherwise.

I have done more scratch building since I lost my job, and only work part time now. It allows for a much more diverse army. At least it does for orks.. Good job on the scratch build..

Pretty good job, although the corners on the sides look a bit messy. I would personally use paper cylinders instead of chopsticks for the rotating mount
how sturdy is it?
maybe try an infantry model next? (it is possible, at least for necrons)

Well, I have tried making a Broadside and Crisis suit, in my opinion though they weren't really that good. I think I'll stick to tanks for a while.
It's a pretty tough Chimera, even though it's a paper model. It's very sturdy and takes hits/knocks/drops very well (it got dropped loads while under construction!). One of my main goals while making this was to make it strong, so I reinforced almost everything with extra cardboard and superglue!
@ruff- Thanks, I completely agree!

Also, depending on the time invested in building one of these, it would be quite the item when your vehicle gets wrecked you can just smash it right on the board,

unless you're building simple cardboard cut-out proxies, it takes way too much time to build one that looks good to just smash it.
I didnt keep track of how long my monolith has taken so far, but it cant be less than 10-20 hours

I'd actually recommend PVA glue for joining large surfaces (just be careful of warping from the glue shrinking while drying) and either PVA or something like Tacky Glue for the smaller surfaces/edges

Amazing work! It looks just as good, although the turret looks like someone has sat on on it! Only kidding lol
But the problem with paper models, is you may not be able to use them in GW.

Imperial guard: Because quantity has a quality of it's own.
Sisters of Battle can be used in any game, with the exception of chess, Monopoly and of course, Warhammer 40,000.
After 8 editions, you might have thought that GW could get fantasy right. |

Seconded. It took ages to make that tank, no one is going to smash my precious! Please post pics when you're done, I'm really interested to see how it turns out. I was thinking of making a Monolith myself (but then I've been thinking of making just about everything at this stage), it looks like a massive project!
EDIT: Sorry, didn't realise you already have uploaded pics!

No problems here, the nearest GW is 12 hours away! We've made our own unofficial gaming group which is more than happy with scratch built models and proxies. In fact, there are actually very few GW products in our 'club' so far.
