Subject: Help with next purchases for Codex marines and tactics. Still getting my butt kicked

Alright, so, After getting my arse handed to me again, I decided to try and bump my list up to 1,500pts. I just dont know what to buy that will help my list at all.
Here is my list:
HQ: Vulkan-190pts
Elite 1: dreadnaught ( MM, DCCW)-105pts
Elite 2: Tactical Terminators (5-man, assault cannon/cyclone)230pts
Troop1: Tactical squad (10 man, combi-flamer, meltagun, power fist, rocket launcher, rhino)-245pts
Troop 2: Tactical squad (10 man, melta gun, combi-flamer, power fist, rhino)-245pts
Troop 3 Tactical squad (5 man, Razorback)-165pts
F/A 1: HF/ MM speeder-70pts
total: 1,250pts
This is all the things I have atm. I dont know what to use or do next, but my ideas are to use this list I made for 1,500pts (note I havnt used this list yet, but I got my arse handed to me with the one above)
HQ: Vulkan-190pts
Elite 1: dreadnaught ( MM, DCCW and heavy flamer, drop pod w/ locator beacon)-160pts
Elite 2: 7 Sternguard vet (5 combiguns, one meltagun and 1 heavy flamer Rhino)-250pts
Troop1: Tactical squad (10 man, combi-flamer, meltagun, powerfist, rocket launcher, rhino)-245pts
Troop 2: Tactical squad (10 man, melta gun, combi-flamer, powerfist, rhino)-245pts
Troop 3: Tactical squad (5 man, Razorback)-165pts
F/A 1: HF/ MM speeder-70pts
F/A 2: HF/MM speeder-70pts
H/S1: Maverick predator (Twin linked lascannon, )-105pts
total-1,500pts
Bolded are the things I do not have, And I need advice on them so I dont waste money.
One thing I would like to defend is my sternguard's loadout. the squad is 7 vets with 5 guys using combi-meltas and one has a melta gun, while the other has a heavy flamer. I really want to make the most out of vulkan with these guys, and the heavy flamer seems pretty scary to me, especially if I get vulkan in the squad, as a template full of re-rollable wounds can add even more wounds to 5 bolters with hellfire rounds. (please note that heavy flamers are assault)
last game I killed some assault terminators by getting 4 under vulkan's template and 3 with the speeder's one, getting 7 wounds in total and frying a terminator and dealing a wound to my opponent's HQ (lysander) and then assaulted with vulkan and a tactical squad, almost killing lysander (one power fist hit from him going splat) and knocking the terminators down to one. I really like the heavy flamer's ability, especially with vulkan's re-rolls
So, any tips on what I should get and what I should get rid of? thanks.

Not sure what is the local played armies where you are, however, a thunderfire cannon or two would not hurt. I have rarely seen a game where one of those is wasted points. 60 inch range, good choices in munitions, and, a techmarine to go along with it. I play orcs and I fear seeing one of those.

^Why havn't I thought of that?
really though, what should I get? The drop pod for my dreadnaught (never used one) the 7 sternguard guys (have the models but planning on making my own) or the HF/ MM speeder (never used more than one before) Or should I break down and buy assault terminators?
And what should I get rid of, if anything? troop 3, the 5 men in a razorback? (planning on using them to get 5 more guys and a plasma cannon) theTactical terminators? (planning on it anyway ) The predator? please help me out with advice that is more helpfull then the usual spam of "assault terminators". A thing I really am thinking of getting is two vindicators or something.

2 vindicators would be sicks, having only 1 would be ineffective though. I think the predator and the tactical terminators are the two things to drop. Get some vindi's or 85 point dakka preds, which I think are highly underrated. GL man it took me awhile to figure out marines also before i started winning with em.

Thanks man, i need the luck x-x lost every game in the 5 months of playing. some of the games I played are worst than others (low bloodsugar) but it's a learning process i guess. Vanilla marines arnt the best, but I guess thats when you need to learn good tactics to combat their mediocre troops.
I was playing around with 3 vindicators spam, but I think that might not be fun to play against But, I might need to break down and get the assault terminator/land raider combo, or just take a regular land raider in place of the predator.
The predator I have should have filled the long-range tank hunter unit along with the razorback, but thus far the razorback took down more things than that.
Also, do you think the 7 sternguard and vulkan squad is killy?
Sorry this is so all over the place

If you are running a Vulkan list, you want:
Assault Terminators to go with Vulkan, since he is a close combat hero. *With Thunder Hammers, since, Vulkan makes them Master Crafted.
A Land Raider Redeemer w/ Multi Melta
Other things that use Flamers/Meltas >.>

Right firstly the drop pod dread - you don't need the locator beacon. Also 1 'in your face' threat isn't going to apply much pressure although otherwise the dread is going to be too slow.
You could go for 5 sternguard + vulkan in a razorback. The 2nd tac squad could take a missile launcher to camp home objectives.
Long range you could take a dakka pred, dakka dred (2x TL Autocannon) or a 3missile/1 lascannon devistator squad.
Also seconded for the redeemer and some TH/SS termies. Just remmeber vulkans rules dont apply to the incinerator cannons on the redeemer only the Multimelta
Any source of cheap melta is good:
Attack bikes, land speeders, sternguard etc.
I myself tend to run:
Vulkan
5 sternguard w/4 combi weapons in pod
2 dread w/MM, CCW+flamer in a pod
2 x 10 man tac squads, in razorback. Pfist + combi-melt, meltagun and either missile launcher or MM
2 vindicators - dozer blade, sometimes a HKM
5 missile devistators.
It tends to do pretty well.

thanks! I had the plan before to use the locator beacon for a deepstrikeing speeder. now I two meltas in the back field!
What do you think of the sternguard squad I have thought up? worth while? do you think it will give out a lot of wounds? (the heavy flamer is assault)
And for the last few games I tried out the multi-melta. my guys not moving kinda made them sitting ducks when a dreadnaught with a plasma cannon came trudeging up, but finally destroyed it with the MM after 2 turns.
Do you think I have too many tactical marines? I can get rid of troop 3, but that lascannon really helps. maybe add 5 more guys with a plasma cannon or something in place of the points from the las cannon predator?
Thanks again!

The answer to getting better at 40k and not getting your 'butt kicked' does not lie in buying more models, but improving your game. Increasing the point value of your games will not address the issue either. I know that is not the answer your looking for, but it's the truth.
Instead I suggest the following
* Find and read strategy/tactics guides
* Watch battle reports on youtube.
* When your done playing people ask what they would have done differently if they were you
* Take pictures of your games using your smart phone. Look at them later and reflect what you could have done differently.
* Make battle reports and post them on dakka. People will give you suggestions on how you could have done better
* Ask yourself the following questions after each game
--- Could I have deployed in a better fashion?
--- What did I encounter that gave me big problems?
--- What did I have that worked exceptionally well?
--- What could I have done differently?
I cannot stress this enough. Changing out some of the models will not give a different result. You need to look at the core of your playing skill to get batter.
An experienced, skilled player can take the Vulcan army you have and stomp all of a moderate GK player. The trick is to get to that level yourself.

One: I love dreads in pods. I find them to be fun on a bun.
Two: Before you make you purchase sit down and seriously consider your basic tactics.
What are you trying to do?
How would your opponent counter this?
How can you counter the counter?
How can you deploy Better?
Three: Get what you want! If you aren't enjoying the game there is no point.

Actually I was looking for an answer like that I guess I was collapsing under the mountain of "play higher point games" that comes from the TFG. My original plan was to wait off on buying something until I win a game, just to bump the points up a little bit more.
Now, I just need to make a checklist thats similar to your thing, and ask myself this after every game. Thanks for the advice, I couldnt ask for better
And in response to collius, Thanks for the help with that too. So, as an example, my sternguard:
They are trying to kill infantry and be flexible to blow up tanks, the two special weapons taking advantage of the twin-linked rule.
The counter to this unit is blowing up the transport they are in and drowning them in fire, since they are still 3+ saves and no invuln. They can also be folded in half by CC units.
Counters to the counters is to screen their rhino with other rhinos from the tactical squad or vindicators, Getting cover saves as they try to move up. Putting vulcan in the squad to add an extra flamer and
to take extra saves with his 2+ save, and to make them a little bit better in CCW, and give the sergeant a lightning claw or power fist.
Deployment is to put them behind other rhino's and dreadnaught, giving them cover and helping them survive the first round. General deployment will try to be refused flank, putting 1,250 on their 600pts or something like that.
[Like that? ]

Labmouse is right. You never get too experienced or too veteran to stop analyzing and improving your game. He has you on the right track.
Furthermore, I lost a lot of games (I mean a lot) before I ever turned the corner when I started playing this game (back in '96). There is a significant learning curve. You have to learn the basic rules of the game, from which all strategies are founded. On top of that, a player has to learn his own codex (what works well with your personal play style, etc.). On top of all that, you have to start building a familiarity with all the other codexes. There really are a mountain of special rules for all the 'other' armies which can take you by surprise if you are not familiar with them.
Try to stay patient and keep working to improve your game. I second all the reflection oriented advice Labmouse has given you. I would like to emphasize watching battle reports on youtube.com. It will supplement your own in game experiences.

Yea with Vulkan assault terminators would be best, and with a LR to take them to assault, you have a strong center piece for your army.

If your looking where to grow you army, this is one of the better Vulcan lists I've seen. Its a good place to start for what to shift to.
Try poxy'ing some models in a few games to see if this list works for you.
While not a fun list, it works quite well, and I have used it to great success. Vulkan goes with the Termies. They charge across the board while the Sternguard(yes, there are ten. Combat squadding after drop is beautiful) sow havoc in the rear.

Still way to many tac squads IMO. Did you try and run any of the lists I built for you? Its seems like you're never staying on a list long enough to learn its uses (and a strange fascination with tactical squads).

Whoops I sometimes just plain forget about the lists v-v sorry about that. One part stubborness, one part idiocy On my part. I do think I'll try the multi-sternguard list though. Again I am really sorry about that I completely forgot until you reminded my. Next game I will try it out. Although it's worth noting that I dont have a ton of rhinos or drop pods like you listed :( And the tactical squads.... no clue really, just thought it would be a good idea

Hey, good for you. Trying stuff out on the cheap before investing is just plain smart. If peopel are giving you crap, ignore them... now if you play for 9 months with a paper vindicator, that's a different story. Also, I don't know how your locals do with this, but ask to borrow things from the more approachable guys. Most gamers should be thrilled to shepard a new gamer.... especially if they're running the same codex.

I played for 3 games with one, and then the store manager said I couldnt. guess GW is kinda strict on that. and I was thinking about that for the list you sent, borrowing some things like rhinos and just having fun

I was in my GW one day, and one guy was using wolves from some other game as units in his space wolves army (this was the week after the release) and one of the workers came over and made him take his models of. He said, "Only Games Workshop models are allowed for use in the store." GW is kind of strict, but it is for sales purposes not to be cheese heads.
