I was at work the other day and a nurse was throwing out a whole heap of packing foam things that were one layer of plaster of paris away from being sweet bunkers/bridges/hills/what have you. Cue nonononono! and running (I didn't want her to throw it in the bin, I ain't diving in there to get it out...). In the end I saved most of it from a messy end and afterwards she asked me what I was using it for. I replied terrain for a game that I play and straight away got 'Ohh with models and dice and all that?' I sighed in expectation of a chuckle, but instead...'I used to play those games with my friends, but we played more small band games like D&D and I was always a dwarf and since I was the smallest character they would throw me down a hallway to set off any traps...'
I lolled, we talked about gaming for a bit, and then I went back to work much happier and chuckling a bit to myself for the next hour or so.

Another was at poker with me and my mates, they know I play but have sworn never to touch it. All of a sudden one of them asks me if we can set up a game, apparently he's picked up Tau and wants to have a crack at it. I was pleasantly surprised.

Anyone have any other occasions where you randomly found a gamer who you wouldn't have expected?

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

A few years ago I was at a GW store tournament that ended w/a big mega-battle. I wasn't able to make the tournament.(work) I did make the mega-battle. Being this hobby has lots of younger players, parents were showing up to pick up their kids. A loud Harly pulls up outside a 6'6" biker guy in leather holding his bikes saddle bags over his shoulder stomps in, looks over to the store manager & says "am I too late". The manager says" no your over on that side". Out of his saddle bag he pulls out the most amazing painted obliterators I've ever saw

My job interview for the job I've proudly held for the last 4 months. My resume says "commission miniatures painter" and the art director brought it up to me. The conversation went as follows:
"Warhams?"
"Warhams."
And now that he's moving nearby I'm hoping I can game after work with him.

Flew to Chicago for GT with my army in a carry-on. I didn't have ID and had to go through the screening process (bank teller forgot to give me my license back). I was really nervous the TSA folks would break my stuff inspecting it. They wouldn't let me near the bag but I tried to tell them it was all veeeery fragile from 10' away.

The guard pulls out my first clear plastic storage box and says "are these Tyranids?"

I don't know if it's the weirdest place but I have been going to the same Goth / Industrial alternative club in London for the last 20 years or so, but only recently found that about 50% of the male regulars all play 40K, needless to say we now have a sizeable gaming group.

I think the best 40K thing that's happened to me recently though was going to see Rammstein at the O2 in London.

Because I had to go straight from work, and because British weather is crap I was wearing my GW hoodie with a bloody great Imperial Aquilla on it.

As the tickets we had were seating I was just taking it off and sorting my bag out when I noticed the guy and his girlfriend a couple of seats along the row were giving me and my mate funny looks, then I realised it was Mark Harrison from GW design studio.

So I guess we just get everywhere!!

I was on a plane to turkey and in the row infront of me was a young child and his dad reading a verry battered tyranid codex, after an amount of time (and reasons i cannot remember) we struck up a conversation and at this point i was new to playing tau and had an aweful lot to learn and to boot had not as little as herd about the tyranids so the three of us were passing the codex back and forwards for about 2 hours, it turned out that the young kid was the tyranid player and the father was an IG player, this naturaly led to the debate about which was better. but thats what you expect from being sealed in a flying tin can

I truly find gamers everywhere.

Sometimes I wonder if the whole "weirdest place I found a gamer" is just a showing of our own stereotypes towards ourselves as socially awkward gamers on the fringe of society.

It doesn't have to be the fringe of society, I was more going for the stories like random nurse lady happens to have been a madly keen D&D player, a whole mess of people at the goth bar are keen warhammer players, someone's job interviewer played 'warhams'. The entertaining ones.

They'd be odd places to find most hobby similarities, like if I found out a nurse at work was heavily into bodybuilding as a youth, that half the men at the goth bar were into ponies (not saying you are person who posted that one), or that the job interviewer...I dunno, I'm tired, but some other hobby similarity that a poster has with them.

I have a cousin that I have not seen since Thanksgiving, and at that time I talked about the warhams and warmachine, etc... So a few days ago, he made a post on facebook about that horrible live action Dragon Ball movie, we were going back and forth about why he would watch it if he knew it was terrible going into it, etc... His friend chimes in and my cousin asks him how the army is coming (I assumed said friend had enlisted, because that's the normal thing to do). His friend says that he just needs to paint and get used to playing.

I was like, "Army?? You've piqued my interest, especially when you said, 'paint'"

Turns out since Thanksgiving (not by my hand lol) my cousin and a friend or two have picked up 40k... They play Space Wolves (or Grey Knights... I don't think he's chosen an army) and Chaos... So they immediately say we need to play and they asked me what army I play...

Turns out, I have waaaaaay too many armies for a game I haven't played seriously in almost a year...

So yeah, that was the oddest place I've found gamers... I didn't even initiate the conversation lol...

yes...Yes...YES!!!!

The plan is almost complete! In a few more decades we shall overthrow all governments and war gamers around the globe shall rise up and conquer the planet!!

*Ahem*

Not really a strange place...but I was just wandering past my local park, a mere 2 minutes from my house, and saw a poster with the Imperial Aquila on it...after close inspection it was for a wargaming club, only a mere 2 minutes from where I live
And after spending a year thinking that the failing hobby store in town was the only place that Warhammer existed in my local area (WELL before I found dakka etc) This was a godsend.
I suppose sitting in a Catholic chapel in a university and realizing 5-6 people sitting around you play as well is odd...

*I apologize for any offence caused by the last bit, my dad hates religion, therefore my idea of Catholics is a little...stereotypical*

A new day, a new time zone.

In an onsen in Japan. Fortunately, it was in the lounge where you go after you're done soaking to get food, booze, watch TV, take a nap, so everyone was mostly dressed again, because hanging around naked in a hot spring talking gaming with strangers would've been just a little weird.

I wanna go back to New Jersey

I was sitting outside this beach side restaurant in South Carolina while waiting for a table.

I was reading the 5th ed rulebook to kill time and to finally clear some things on transports. This guy walks by and says "hello" (I think) and we get into a nice discussion about 5th ed.
