Obama ad calls Mitt Romney’s Bain Capital firm a ‘vampire’
President Obama’s campaign is out with a tough new ad, “Steel,” attacking former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney’s record on job creation.
The two-minute ad focuses on GS Technologies, a steel mill in Kansas City, Mo., that was bought by Romney’s private equity firm Bain Capital and went bankrupt soon after.
The ad paints Romney as out of touch with the needs of the local workers and concerned only with Bain’s own profits.
“We view Mitt Romney as a job destroyer,” says one former mill worker in the ad. Another calls Bain “a vampire. They came in and sucked the life out of us.” The spot will air in five key states: Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Iowa and Colorado. It will run for only one day, May 16, on the evening news. The campaign has also launched a Web site, RomneyEconomics.com, with a six-minute version of the ad.
The Obama campaign has launched a $25 million ad buy this month.
“Mitt Romney helped create more jobs in his private sector experience and more jobs as Governor of Massachusetts than President Obama has for the entire nation,” said Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul.
Bain bought GST in 1993. According to a January profile of the takeover by Reuters, less than a decade later, the plant closed, and 750 workers lost their jobs. The workers were denied their severance and health insurance, and their pensions were cut. A federal pension agency had to bail out the underfunded pension plan. Yet Bain profited.
“Bain Capital invested in many businesses,” Romney spokesman Ryan Williams told Reuters. “While not every business was successful, the firm had an excellent overall track record and created jobs with well-known companies like Staples, Dominos Pizza and Sports Authority.”
Romney co-founded Bain, but he left in 1999 to run the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. The steel company went bankrupt in 2001. “He set this in motion,” argued Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter on a conference call with reporters.
The ad is Obama’s first to attack Romney’s business record, but it’s not the first criticism of Romney’s Bain tenure during the presidential campaign. In the Republican primary race, former House speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Gov. Rick Perry took similar lines of attack.

That seems fairly irresponsible of them...

According to Obama's buddies 'he set it in motion'
Leaving the workers in the lurch is still an irresponsible thing to do...
Bain effectively became their employers after the take-over correct?

I have no idea. I'm more than familiar with Bain and don't need an Obama hit piece to tell me about it. I'm more interested in how Obama intends to get the vampire vote if he antognizes them like that.
Its does say 8 years difference though. Thats a long time in business, and the steel industry is crap in the US all around.

So your Presidential candidates may or may not be a vampire. Will this sway your vote? Why?

I tried looking up historical steel prices but couldn't really find anything for 20 years ago, so instead I pulled up US Steel Corp. to see what their share price did; their value basically fell by half from the early 90s into the early 00s, I'm guessing because increasing global steel production cut deeply into the margins of the US steel industry generally. A single plant in the middle of the US without a lot of access to port facilities/transportation in order to tap into a global market was probably not very efficient or competitive.
Bain likely profited because they were invested into a number of different equities, some of which did much better than a failing steel mill.
Quite frankly, although I understand how plant employees can misunderstand that shifting global economic models affect their business, I doubt this makes Bain a "vampire". If anything, maybe this steel mill would have gone under before it did, kept afloat by Bain's capital investment.

ISnt it the other way around?
Liberals are supposed to be the vampires who suck the country of money and stranger foreigners with odd accents?
While the GOP are supposed to be mindless zombies who do nothing but consume and follow the crowd?

Steve Rattner, the man President Obama chose to run the bailout of General Motors and Chrysler, does not think very highly of the Obama's new campaign to demonize Mitt Romney's record at Bain Capital.
Asked to defend the new two-minute ads featuring a steel worker who lost his job on Morning Joe, Rattner replied: "I think the ad is unfair. ... I do think to pick out an example of someone who lost their job unfortunately, this is part of capitalism. This is part of life. And I don't think there is anything Bain Capital did that they need to be embarrassed about."
Rattner knows a lot about job losses. As Obama's car czar he ordered the closings of hundreds of GM and Chrysler dealerships that, according to a TARP Inspector General's report, caused "tens of thousands of jobs were lost as a result."

I was interested in this ad because we had a huge steel company(Geneva Steel) go down the tubes here. I work with quite a few of the guys that used to be employed there and they blame other countries subsidizing there steel industries and selling their lower priced goods. They also pointed out higher tariffs for U.S. Steel as compared to foreign competitors.
As a result, Geneva Steel had its buildings dismantled and sent to China. The had been in business here since WW2.
The story of a steel company going bankrupt in this country is not unique or even new.
Here's a Washington Post review of the ad:
