Update #80 - http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/poots/kingdom-death-monster/posts/704361

Happy Holidays! Christmas Day Update!

Dearest backers, I come with a pair of upgrades and a gift!
( in a super duper rush, did not spell check this one, anna is asleep and I beg you for forgiveness! )

I am happy to be spending another holiday season with you all! It has been a truly special year and I gotta admit its actually really hard to stop working for a few days. Until the new years I will be dialing my time down to just 2 hours of work a day, so i can keep ontop of key communication with the plastic production team and a few of the freelancers that aren't taking time off.

Upgrades

The forsakers mask, a piece of gear you can earn from defeating the butcher is also now represented in miniature form. It was just too cool to pass up! The original skull helm has had another art pass. The original was interesting but the new one feels much better. In addition they will also be represented in miniature form for all those budding bone warriors out there!

Gift
This is my gift to everyone for being awesome. I spent some time with our digital sculptor working on some more elaborate hair styles. These were initially a creative exploration, but they turned out so well we have decided to share them! These extra heads will be included in every core game box.

I am rolling all the other updates I have at this point into a larger update which should be around... the second week in January. ( maybe end of first week?) I am expecting a lot of plastics so it would be nice to have a little time to assemble everything, take photos and then just share it all at once.

I just wanted to say again, thank you so very much for being part of this kickstarter and part of my life for the last year. We are so much closer now to bringing this truly titanic project into reality and all of this simply would not be possible without you. Although there was a certain comfort in taking it slow, this push is worth it and I just can't wait until we are all playing KD:M together!

!!!!!!!!

More free stuff? Adam sure likes to pile it on which is fine by me - and most everyone else, I'm sure. Thank you, Mr. Poots.

Really like the Skull Helms.

Yeah, well - I didn't initially pledge because:

1) My only prior experience with KD miniatures had been the genitalia/vomiting/mammary-focused stuff

2) I thought the pinups were the primary focus of the game (when they were actually just a primary focus of the latter part of the Kickstarter).

3) It looked like I had to spend an additional $200 or so to get a "complete" version of the game with decent enemy variety.

4) I had my doubts about a one-man operation delivering on that number of models to that many customers.

I later did pledge on the recent Black Friday Survivor-level (despite a further premium for doing so) because everything I've been hearing about this project has been positive, and I've seen nothing but love and care in the recent project updates.

But I'm still a bit worried, honestly. There's still so many things that can go wrong, especially when China's involved!

Reasons TO have pledged.

1) Poots does stellar work and showed the figures (at least renders/art) during the kickstarter.

2) Poots has stellar customer service and actually gives more than half a damn about the people he sells to.

3) CMoN, McVey, Mantic, and Romeo aren't involved.

4) Oh, did I mention Poots?

I'll be honest. I really don't care a whole lot about the game. I'm basically in it for the models. I've got six of his resins already and they are among the best models I've seen.

I'm really hoping to be able to buy more of the basic survivor sprues.

I'll end up having them as multi player games, and might need more then the four basic food groups.

So you basically didn't look at the actual project at all, eh?

Not entirely true! I watched the KS video, read the latest update, went through the pledge levels, and scrolled a fair way down the title page - there's rather a lot on there!

Even after subsequently looking into the project in a great deal of detail, I still think that the base game lacks monster variety, given the price point and the focus of gameplay. I still think that, however excellent the models and production values, it is going to be a very expensive prospect to own the 'whole' game, especially at retail. And while I think that Poots is a truly excellent human being, I still very much think that large projects from one-men teams have an inherently higher risk factor, which is definitely a deterrent to some pledgers.

But all of the above was simply an attempted explanation of why some people, who might be the ideal audience for this game, may not have initially pledged.

Incidentally to the massive success of the Kickstarter, I think the amount of goodwill and discussion the project has generated during development is going to translate into a very strong retail demand for those that missed out. I get the impression that this is certainly not universally the case, which is presumably why you still see brand new £20 copies of Sedition Wars floating around...

Keep in mind that each individual monster isn't like a random encounter that you'd find in your average RPG. Each one is a mind-flaying, soul-raping, nightmare-fueling hellbeast that exists for the purpose of destroying you and everyone you love.

Each fight is a carefully crafted boss-level encounter. With that focus in mind, the variety isn't actually that bad.

So more like Dark Souls, then.

Anyway, is this even going to have a retail release? I remember there being some uncertainty with that before.

It's probably going to be a limited retail release- I think he mentioned wanting to work solely with brick and mortar stores. He didn't want to deal with online discounters, and undercuts. I doubt it will be widely available, but you never know.

I've been to the factory in China where these are being made (see this thread) and can say with confidence that the terms that they have together, the skills and niceness of the people in that factory and the sizes of the teams involved, both at the factory and on poot's end give me absolutely no concern about the project delivering. I've spoken to poots on a number of occasions and while things were pretty crazy at the start due to the immensity of the kickstarter, things now look very good and there will certainly be a very high quality product delivered at the end, in line with people's expectations.

Cool Mini Or Not. Check out their website at coolminiornot.com.

As I understand it, they underwrite a lot of Kickstarters as publishers - Zombicide, Wrath of Kings, Cadwallon, etc. There's a slew of opinions on how they're handling Kickstarters, so I won't rehash them here.

Just saw this over on Thomas David's blog, originally posted on Nov. 15th apparently.

Hello everyone!
New article in Kingdom Death serie. Today here's a very detailed miniature; the Storm Knight!
This impressive boss have been very fun to do, and his style his close to the famous Flower Knight!
It is 65 mm tall and have been made with Fimo and Magic sculpt putty, as usual.
Stay tuned!

More angles on the actual blog.

An interesting tidbit here:

@Everyone. Yes we are behind the original estimated delivery date. And you are all backers, not customers. Starting fulfillment in march is not likely, as all of February the factories in china will be shut down for Chinese new year. It also takes on the average 6 weeks for a shipment to travel across the sea and clear customs.

Aaand he's lost me as a future customer. Good going.

It also cements my resolution to auction off all of my "pledge rewards" save the resin Phoenix, once they arrive, that is. If I manage to get back what I spent, I'll be happy.
