Expansions on Sale & The Future of Kingdom Death:

We are at a very interesting time and place with Kingdom Death. The kickstarter is nearly behind us, the game is sold out, and all that is ahead of us is the horizon. stretching out like a big empty canvas. I admit, this is sort of a new and difficult place. I've never worked like I did these past 4 years.

We (myself and the team) took every challenge head on, locked horns with any issue, and generally learned not to compromise! All that effort and all those crazy decisions we made... have now been validated. The ambition, as ludicrous as it felt, has been reached.

Putting aside my concerns and embracing a very pure desire to create is what lead to Kingdom Death and our eventual kickstarter in the first place. Our very first release, the White Speaker, was priced so that the investment would break even.

So! In the vein of embracing the insanity, Here are some things I am excited to see on the horizon of Kingdom Death. Consider it a soft-announcement of the things that inspire me to work every morning.

KDM - Nightmare Ram Expansion
KDM - Ringtail Fox Expansion
KDM - Black Knight Expansion
KDM - Gryphon Expansion
KDM - Frogdog Expansion
KDM - Lantern Festival (being reworked from the ground up, might focus on towns instead of settlements)
KDM - Storm Knight Expansion (how a survivor can become a hero)
KDM - Custom Campaign Book (for mixing our current expansions, supported with new story events)
KDM - Rust Ocean (area where Architects are from)
KD:Q - Kingdom Death Quest, a PVC game for mass market (gonna try distro with this!)
KD:T - Titan, a deck building game, its perspective far pulled far back to the greater entity level.
KD:L - Labyrinth, the game that highlights Twilight Knights, White Speakers and other hero level classes.
KD:2D - A retro cinematic platformer, with GORGEOUS hand made sprite animation.
MALE PINUPS

Of course these are the far off projects that loom large and don't include the resin releases that I have the pleasure of working on everyday!

Will all of this see the light of day? Will the team rebel and overthrow me first? I certainly can't say for now, but it should be a lot of fun either way!

In any case, having the ability to add more stuff through the pledge manager now benefits all parties; the ones that didn't have enough during the kickstarter to grab all they wanted; and Adam because he gets more money. Those that backed out or never pledged because they wouldn't be able to add more later, can, hopefully, find a friend or sponsor willing to help out so they can piggyback on their pledge.

It's unfortunate that we couldn't know beforehand that this would be an option and had to operate under the assumption that it wouldn't - I believe we were told it was a possibility but not to count on it (ie. "No adding funds later."). Even suspecting this outcome as inevitable, I still went mostly all-in just in case.

Kingdom Death wrote:Heya Guys,

Hard at work over here! Looks like I might be going to china real soon to visit some factories! I've also been learning a lot about dice making, what is and what isn't possible etc. I've spoken to Chessex, Koplow and a few places in china. Much greater detail is possible by doing silk screen printing on die but... I dunno. I really feel like they need to be engraved, which drastically changes what can and can't be done.

Adam Poots wrote:The way the game would be introduced to people, and the way you will interact with it as a player is by experience. Every monster will have three short folk tales that encompass its personality and place in the world. Story is important, but not in a literary, linear sense. The story is about you the player, interacting with this world and experiencing it with your friends as everything unfolds. To me the way I want to show the world to people is through the little folk stories and the events that are in the game, including the major story events and smaller hunt events. You’ll get little descriptions and slices of the world from the perspective of the people in it. I don’t want to just give people a full history and map of this world. I want to have everything separated into small digestible pieces. The more you play, the more familiar you’ll be with the world and the more it’ll all fit together. When you start the game, the player’s knowledge is zero, and the survivor’s knowledge is zero. You get introduced to everything slowly and organically as you play. Because of that perspective, you’ll see things different from the way they might actually be.

Very eager to experience this first hand.

Hmm. Looking closer at the Lion Knight artwork, does anyone else see it and think "Pimp Slap!" ?

Really? Those look like pretty awesome paint jobs to me.

The quality is fine and kudos to the artist for making them look good. But the eyes look kinda derp to me. So seeing as a professional and, more importantly, skilled painter did that and the eyes still came out derpy, then what hope have I to paint non-derpy eyes?! There is no hope! It's hopeless!

Plus I'm thinking that some kind of basic (read: low skill requirement) paint job to get them to look like statues may be a nice alternative.

Is it really a complaint? I think you're reading too much into it.

[snip]

or maybe a pinup of the archivist class associated with the twilight knight order (again it would fit with the books)

no idea on the bottom one though

I definitely believe they're concept work but probably for things we haven't seen. The first thing that came to mind was one of the Lion Knight's girls. Especially when I saw the picture linked below. It could the a render of the preacher pin-up, though. In any case, we definitely need the opportunity to toss money at Adam again.

Already posted in the other thread, but updating here as well.

Update #75 (Aug 5th)
Schedule & Plastic Manufacturing Update
Nothing new to report on plastic manufacturing yet. Still collecting samples so I can have a nice little show and tell for an update. Initially I was planning for this to be mid august, but it might slip to end of august. In september I will be pulling the trigger on production, so if we are facing any delays I will know by then.

Shipping Update
So far we have sat down in meetings with, USPS, DHL and Fedex. Things are looking much brighter there then I had anticipated. Fedex offers a service that we are currently discussing in greater detail, wherein packages would be picked up and then shipped from a single international point of origin [via comments: It would be EU based, as the majority if international backers are in the EU]. What customs taxes people can expect from shipping within Europe using this method still remains to be seen but it's a promising option. The suit & tie fedex reps, were not prepared for our warehouse and the hoards of tiny men that presented them. They kept talking about how different it was for them.

Game Dev Update
After much agonizing, we decided on the final dimensions of the game book. It will be 11"x8.5" landscape format. There were many design considerations that went into this, but here are the ones that really matter to us. Wide format art looks way more awesome! By going landscape we make the book a little easier to fit on a busy table with lots of gaming pieces. Finally, for future online content we really wanted consistent look and feel to be possible from anyone's home printer.

That begs the question if we'll see these new models (and other existing figures) make an appearance in any future Kickstarter Adam might have for Kingdom Death: Heroes. Probably.

Confirmation that the WoK twilight Knight must be bought with a starter minimum

Leif Paulson 1 minute ago

We have gotten a ton of questions about the Kingdom Death crossover miniatures. To be perfectly clear they are tied to starters, If you want one you have to purchase a faction starter. If you were a KD backer, you can access an additional one. It is tied directly to the number of faction starters you get, so if you are pledging at the Ancient King level, you can buy 5 if you really want. Hopefully that makes sense. So no a la carte menu, you cannot buy them individually. Been working this out for a while now, soonest I could get the info to you.

Boo!

I don't really understand that decision. Heck, I'd buy a faction starter if any of them appealed to me. The Hadross are nice but not enough *cough* Kingdom Death flavor for my taste.

Consider my pledge cancelled, good sirs!

Aspirant Tech-Adept

No, I figured that's what they're doing. It's not hard to see why they would.

The reason I said I don't really understand it is because even if someone were just picking up the Twilight Knight (which was my intention), they're still contributing to the kickstarter campaign. It's not a big contribution especially when you factor in shipping costs, but I'd imagine that there'd still be a profit to be had even from a single model: it's no different than a sale at that point and plenty of miniatures sell for as much or lower than the asking price of the promo figure.

So, again, I don't really understand it even though I can comprehend why they'd do it.
Made in us
Aspirant Tech-Adept

That's entirely possible, Alpharius.

Obviously, I don't know what the actual costs will be for CMON. The margin probably just isn't as large as they'd like it to be. And no, I'm not calling them greedy. I'm just saying that while I believe it would (could?) still contribute - aside from the publicity gained simply by having a Kingdom Death tie-in - that contribution might not be enough for them logistically to bother with the effort. Basically, sell thousands of Twilight Knights and end up with $100 left over for WoK or whathaveyou.

It's main value, however, is simply in getting people to look at their new KS. I certainly did when I saw that a Twilight Knight was offered. While most of the models aren't to my taste, my lack of contribution wasn't for lack of wanting to. Tried to find somewhere to drop $50 but there's not enough appeal for me personally. I'm sure that was not the case for others that happily forked over money. Kickstraq would probably agree, too.

Update #78 is up!

Hello everyone! It's been over a month since our last update where we finally unveiled the material miniatures will be produced in and discussed our delay. For us it's been intense! Long 18-hour days, constant play testing groups, copy editing and pushing ourselves to further tweak and refine every aspect of the project.

Initially I had planned on keeping everyone up to date with smaller weekly updates, but there wasn't anything significant to share and I really don't want to spam peoples inboxes! This will shift in the upcoming months as milestones are reached and there's more to share. Things definitely aren't quite but we're working through a big stretch which will yield lots of news soon.

Pledge Manager Upgrade!
You can update your shipping address directly from the pledge manager now! Here is the direct link: https://kingdomdeath.com/address/address_change.php

Production Update
We've had a pretty big change in the workflow. Originally, I was delivering files and resin masters to the factory and they were responsible for fully preparing the parts for plastic production. However, once production started and we spent countless hours going back and forth over details, we decided it would be best to make a major shift. The KDM project has now invested a significant chunk into a special software license so that I can personally review and tweak miniatures with the KD sculpting team before they are committed to production. The new workflow gives myself and our artists much greater quality control.

Here is an image showing some of the armor kit mastering, its a long detailed oriented process me and the KD team is now handling.

Then the talented engineers can focus on what they do best, which is preparing the figures for molding. This part of the process is very much like a puzzle, since with hard plastic molds there is no tolerance for undercuts at all. In some cases details need to be changed to meet the requirements of the draft angle and make production a reality.

Graphical Evolution
Anna is gonna kill me If I keep upgrading designs… but so long as there is time I just can't help myself! You can see here the mood / trait cards are now much easier to identify.

Oh my! I don't think I've shown you guys what one of the hit location cards looks like!

Effects of the Delay!

Upgraded Tokens - Originally the positive and negative attribute tokens had a simple text design. Since there's time Lokman illustrated a unique piece of art that embodies each attribute! I don't wanna spoil them all, so here are a couple of em.

Monster Crests - Here are some of the other monster Crests that the delay allowed us to include!

Mask Miniatures for the Core Game - Hector has wrapped up all the masks and they will now be included in the core game as a big thanks to everyone. There will be one of each in the core set, not exactly sure which sprue they will end up on yet tho.

Lion Knight Expansion Upgrade - Just another little detail the delay has allowed us to include, The Lion Knight expansion will now include a male and female armor kit compatible head and corresponding holy mask gear card.

Core game rulebook upgrades - We've added a section to the rulebook that talks about KDM's unique game play concepts. I loved this section… so we went back in and added more art to it! We also fleshed out a few more things and are up to oh… 40ish story events? This means the rulebook is pushing around 140+ pages now!

Quick Playtest Highlights

- Survivor spends 13 survival points in a single turn, attempting to flurry the Butcher to death. On the very last attack, his axe breaks and the Butcher ends up wiping the party a few rounds later.

- A Lvl 2 lion seemed to have an affinity for pulling the legs off its victims! Two dismembered legs later, it faced down its final target, a dual katar wielding survivor that managed to hold out and bring it down to its last 2 wounds before dying heroically.

- A settlement reduced to a single person decided to play it out, luckily they drew "Stranger in the Dark", which increased their population by one! This boon however, was met with instant tragedy as one of the two survivors discovered that the lanterns could be used to produce heat and badly burned their body! Mistaken for a flesh monster, the survivor was banished… reducing the population to 1 again!

- Hunting party critically injures an antelope causing it to constantly vomit blood from its large under maw. The effect of this is actually good, it gives bonus insanity to every survivor it passes over (vomiting blood on them of course) and due to the way the AI cards landed, it ended up running over the group several times before they broke out of its combo! Now officially the insane-est party to date.

Worldwide Shipping Stuff
No update yet and there will not be a firm update until we know the exact dimensions and weight of every package. We do not and cannot be expected to control the policies of every unique region and we must meet certain legal requirements to protect ourselves. Once we have isolated the exact fulfillment procedure that we will be using, we will let everyone know. Until then, all I can do is assure you were are exploring every option that comes our way.

Finally, to answer a recurring question.
KDM hired a professional copy editor and no, she doesn't check these updates (she might die after reading one). She's busy checking hundreds and hundreds of cards.

... Gonna sneak in some extra content now!!!!!!!!!!

Aya Origin Comic!
Lokman and I are having a blast working on this!

This Armor Kit mastering image came in while I was writing the update. It shows one of the many methods we are using to check all the sockets with as much scrutiny as possible.

Dragon KIng!?
I think the Dragon King is the most asked about expansion. I do very much like him, but he is not my personal favorite. (I just don't understand why the Dung Beetle Knight isn't everyones favorite like mine! ) Anyway, his sculpt... honestly? I am just not fully satisfied with it. This Dragon has had quite the legacy and I will share the whole story once I do have a version I am totally in love with and feel GREAT committing the huge amount of resources such a large kit will require. But until then, until I have something I am totally proud of to share. He will remain out of the spotlight.

I actually had Danny Cruz do a little art pass and we are incorporating some of his vision into the new final. Which I will share when its ready.

I also got the resin Sunstalker Dancer!

Adam did mention a while back the company in China were using Kingdom Death as a showcase of their abilities. But I'm just not certain what makes these models looks so dang good. Is it Adam's commitment (read: obsession) with quality or the skill from the manufacturer? The world may never know.

Clearly both are skilled. I'd wager Adam's passion and exacting standards couple well with WGF's work ethic and skill.

With the ability to adjust pledges, I might toss more money Adam's way. These miniatures will probably be the best in my, admittedly limited, collection.

Also, I need to purchase new brushes. Adam, any chance of KD branded hobby tools? The name is becoming synonymous with quality.

The effort and commitment shown to both the project and the backers has always been apparent (and appreciated!), Adam. I don't think many will disagree with that.

Hands down Kingdom Death is my most anticipated kickstarter, the best I've backed. Delays, even when done for the best reasons, are still delays. But the blow is softened considerably in the case of KD because of the reason for those delays.

Thanks for all your (and your teams) work so far. Looking forward to buying more of your products. /thumbs up

Being a 'late backer' on this has been increasingly painful as more and more about the project is revealed, and I know that I'll never be able to have any add-ons! We're still not sure if/how much of this will ever see retail release, right?

Full (retail) release is the plan -- edit: KS promo/exclusives not withstanding. But with the slow and limited quantities of the resins before Adam launched KD:M, many of us are banking on a similar pace of retail product waves. I believe Mr. Poots himself has said that he doesn't want things just sitting around in a warehouse.

Also, Daaaayum. Went ahead and purchased the $80 Pinup box and since Adam was nice enough to give us a $20 discount, I was nice enough to spend it on a resin White Speaker Nico. The elation at long last being able to procure one, it is neat.
