It doesn't look like the sort of game I'd be interested in playing (I simply ordered a bunch of miniatures and the artbook), but I'd love to read other people's reports of their campaigns and the grisly / darkly amusing ends their settlements meet. Kind of like Let's Plays of Dwarf Fortress, which this seems very much like the board game equivalent of.

And as I look over the top of the turret and see twelve enemy tanks fifty yards away, someone hands me a cheese sandwich."

Glad to hear I'm not the only one planning a solo campaign (my friends never do anything outside of the weekend), but I do very much plan on keeping track of hilarious/ridiculous/gruesome happenings, I could actually see a whole thread dedicated to such things being pure gold. Let's remember to do that, okay?

But with one particular friend, I know he's going to meet a lot of hilarious ends. Kind of like how in our DnD campaign, he's nearly gotten us killed by failing to throw a rock. On three separate occasions!

Kingdom Death Fanatic. Dark Eldar: Kabal of the Fragile Breath. Dark Elves: Allegiance to the Black Crown. Also, Masons, Cygnar, and Legion of Everblight. All unnamed.

Holy gak that is an awesome username. Please tell me your army is called Kabal of the Fragile Breath. Morathi's Darkest Sin has some competition here for best handle, I think.

Update Time:
So if you can imagine things have been really crazy here! I've got some big news I can share once all the paper work is signed off etc etc...

I will be able to give the final word on fulfilling rewards from within the EU once I have a final box count and the final box weight and dimensions are set in stone. Until then I can't make any promises, just expect everything to be shipped from the states until you hear otherwise.

We are down to just 300 people that need to confirm their pledges! This is excellent news and is far less stragglers then I initially expected. Anna has been working diligently thru everyones emails and making sure she takes care of each backers issues as it comes up. Its a pretty exhausting workload and it would have been simply impossible to manage that + everything else all at once.

For the card stock, we will be going either purple or black core for the extra snap they provide. Its more costly, but its totally worth it! The custom dice included in the game will be made from urea, which has a much nicer feeling then acrylic dice. It was interesting learning about it, as its a much older way to manufacture dice but it results in a slight glass feeling die with way more heft.

I've been hustling all the artists like crazy! Trying to include as much art as humanly possible before the print deadline.

Before we go into art dump mode, on behalf of all the artists, Anna, and Joe whom has taken over orders and customer service, I want to thank you all so much for this opportunity. Everyone is throughly enjoying the work!

The full update is here on the KS page, loads of great images.

If you backed Hell Dorado in order to pick up the twilight knight cross over

The Backer Kit based surveys are now going out, (they are from Kain (at) cyper-studios.com if you need to green light the email address)

BUT some folk won't get an email as Kai says

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you did NOT choose a Pledge Level and chose No Reward, you will not have received a Survey.

There is no option for me to send you one.

My suspicion is many of you that did so wanted just the Twilight Knight. You must choose a pledge level to receive the Twilight Knight. I apologize if this was not clear in the Update, FAQ, and Comments section. What you will have to do is contact me at kain@cipher-studios.com and tell me which pledge level you would like and I can add you to the BackerKit system.

You can then increase your pledge amount to meet the level and add the Twilight Knight. You will have to pay the extra for the pledge level through the BackerKit system. I would highly recommend the Mercenary Level so you can receive the KS exclusive Anne Hale and avoid paying $5.00 additional shipping if you choose the Lemure level.

Update #73

Took two things away from this picture:

1. Need to work out.
2. Am probably just going to basecoat and wash the four survivor models.

Get those sleeves ready, boys!

That is exactly why I backed out of getting the core game/expansions and just picked up a few of my favorite minis. Sheer logistics. I was mildly interested in the game but then I started tallying up the card count ... And I was like "where the hell am I going to put all that stuff?"

** Also - the four core survivors are probably the KD:M minis you'll see the most, game-wise! You should put EXTRA effort into painting them nicely.

You're probably right about that. Seeing that professional paint job, however, just leaves me thinking how much better they looked unpainted.

lol - I dunno if I would have gone with the super-pale male survivor. But they look pretty darn nice to me.

I agree, but in a world that appears to exist without sunlight, probably a pretty 'accurate' look for them!

And, I'm the exact opposite of the opinion above - I backed this due to the sheer amount of stuff I *would* be getting!

And I'm quite happy to hear that it is "A LOT" of stuff!

Of course, it does remind me a bit in size and scale of OGRE, and we all know what happened (and is happening still!) to that one...

There was a lot more to that update than just painted figures!

We have dice!
Update #73 · May 17, 2013 · 56 comments

I have returned from china! The trip was a fantastical whirlwind with so much to see and do. All the food I was treated to was excellent. I also saw a giant duck!

As soon as things are wrapped up and I can ensure everything is in its place I will be sharing manufacturing details.

Boxed Game & Card Components
Everything is going well on this front, our print deadline looms ever menacingly overhead and all of the artists have been cranking out amazing piece of art after the next for it. I've narrowed down the card stock choice between a snappy grey core used for poker cards and a black core which might be too a little too thick and make storage an issue. I've decided against the purple core which had great memory but the card felt too physically thin for my personal tastes. There are 700+ cards in the core box so… storage and weight is something to consider. The box we are looking at is 20"x13"x5" and weighs around 12 lbs. This is HUGE by the way and we are trying to optimize it.

Dice
I got the samples of the ten sided dice today! These caused me so much anguish and I am pleased on how they finally turned out. I spoke to A LOT of dice companies and learned quite a bit about dice making techniques and the different processes people were using. Spheres and curved lines are generally easy to make on dice, its edges, especially tapered edges where things get really difficult. The engraving needs to be sturdy enough so the small edges don't break in the tumbling process so usually there is a size limit on how small a hard corner or small detail can be. The company I choose in the end actually engraves at a slight angle which allows them to get much shaper edges, which was essential since the KD font has tapered tails. I also opted for making the dice in urea instead of acrylic as it has more heft and has that old school dice rolling sound on a table. As far as mass production ready dice go, I feel these are as premium as we can get. The next step up for dice is CNC machining or laser engraving the surface of each die then hand painting it. I would love to make more "art" dice this way in the future. But I wanted to start with a strong set of simple and highly readable dice in the core game.

All still really nice looking, and the painted minis show some pretty cool extra detail.

I'm a bit surprised by some of the colors, though. In particular, the lion knight and the painted minis are way more colorful than I was expecting. The images during the campaign were decidedly in pretty narrow spectrums, each, compared to some more colorful stuff, here.

Hah, if there re 700+ cards for the core set alone, those of us that ordered beyond just the boxed set will have well over a thousand little card things to keep track of.

Dave,

1) Where'd you get them from?
2) Is that the confirmed 'official' card size? I missed that one...

Thanks!

Confirmed in the latest update comments:

Creator Kingdom Death about 12 hours ago

there are two game card sizes : 2"x2" and 2.25" x 3.5" ( the same size as the art cards in the current resin boxes ) dominion card sleeves seem to fit them nicely i think yu-gi-oh sized ones do too. magic card sleeves are too big tho

I got the Swanpanasia 2"x2" here http://www.boardgameextras.co.uk/item.php?id=1986&name=Swan+Card+Sleeves:+52x52+mm+-160+per+pack&cat=291&sub_cat=172#.UZZt68rhJ8E these are the difficult ones to get these aren't quite 2"x2" they are a tiny bit bigger but that's as close as I've found.

the other size is just regular USA sleeves http://www.boardgameextras.co.uk/item.php?id=996&name=50+Premium+USA+Card+Sleeves+%2856+MM+X+87+MM%29&cat=48&sub_cat=41#.UZZufMrhJ8E

Did the number of cards go up drastically or something?

I always assumed there would be a bunch of cards, but 700? And that's just in the base game!

Admittedly that's across a multitude of different deck types, but still! Between myself and my brother we've got all the gameplay expansions coming too! I don't think these cards are going to get sleeved in the end.

That paint job also reminds me that I can't paint worth crap. Nice. Way to stick it to me!

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

2" x 2" is a weird card size. That is going to require custom made sleeves.

The people that ordered all expansions are going to have allot of cards...

The art and sculpts are amazing... I wonder if they are planning on releasing things to the public and if they will expand the game even more.

I think they got a real winner product with KD:Monster :-)

Hmm. Looking closer at the Lion Knight artwork, does anyone else see it and think "Pimp Slap!" ?

Bossk_Hogg wrote:

The quality is fine and kudos to the artist for making them look good. But the eyes look kinda derp to me. So seeing as a professional and, more importantly, skilled painter did that and the eyes still came out derpy, then what hope have I to paint non-derpy eyes?! There is no hope! It's hopeless!

Plus I'm thinking that some kind of basic (read: low skill requirement) paint job to get them to look like statues may be a nice alternative.

To be fair, most of us already bought into the base game. These professional paintjobs seem unnecessary and superfluous for these Kickstarter campaigns.

Never thought I'd see a complaint about the use of professional painting in a kickstarter project. Dakka never ceases to amaze.

I agree breotan.
And keep in mind, the game will probably be sold after the kickstarter as well, so having nice pictures of the models being well painted may very well help the sales after the kickstarter.

I find those painted sculpts to be inspirational !

I really don't understand the logic lol, if you want to display a product, do you show of the best pieces or the worst?

I hope you never get hold of an Rackham Confrontation catalogue, those would kill you :(

I think KD have got this just about perfect

fist showing the unpainted figures (so I can come up with an idea of what I'd do with them, and so I can see any sculpted detail)

then show some outstandingly well painted examples to show how great they can look

If painted examples were all that were shown you're never certain what's detail on the sculpt and what's expert freehand painting

and I also find it a lot harder to think of what i'd do if the first I see of a mini is an uber-paintjob, I'm likely to just end up trying to replicate it (and failing)
