hey everyone
A bit of a side project from my Ogre army, I'm painting these Chaos Space Marines in an old, brassy fashion.
Looking for advice on my first go at verdigris.
here it is:
thanks

It needs to be thicker(pigment wise, not consistency wise). It's a bit dark to me, but I may just be used to the exaggerated verdigris that GW has been slopping over damn near every model lately.

thanks for the comment!
I agree that I might have underdone it, but I was going for a muted kinda look. I will definitely work on the technique though.
If anyone's interested, the recipe is the following:
basecoat of Brassy brass
4 for 1 mix of Gnarls Green and Asurmen Blue
Thin it down

If i can recall, brass develops dark spots as it tarnishes. So if you want a weathered brass look I would sponge on dark spots. It develops green spots too, just check out a urinal fixture or something make sure it's not copper, they weather differently.

I personally use a 4:2:1 mixture of Livery Green:Electric Blue: Skull White, thinned with Magic Water (10:1 mix of Water:Flow Aid).
This gives you a more strong and vibrant patina, which you then can control by applying multiple thin washes.

I love the current look, specifically because it's a bit understated. While verdigris certainly can be bright and vivid, the usual turquoise wash represents an extreme (either of age or abuse). Copper goes through a subtle "greening" after it starts darkening, with the pale, bluish-green film only appearing after years of normal exposure*. What you have could definitely be achieved in real life with a partial polish of brass (which weathers similarly to pure copper, though the base metal is far more yellow) after roughly five years of normal weathering.
I say keep it as-is. It's perfectly defensible in terms of realism, it's different than the usual interpretation, and the darker appearance suits the menacing feel of the models (in my opinion, at least).

I'd leave them as-is; I think they look great. my first thought when I saw the photos was "wow, awesome statue!". the fun part, though, will be making all the other details look just as weathered. I look forward to seeing the final results
