If a caestus assault ram with its melta cannon fires at a target within range, but outside of melta range, and the blast scatters backwards to partially (template not hole) hits another vehicle, does that shot get its melta damage? Ie str 4 + 2d6?

Potentially, Melta is dependent on the distance between the vehicle being hit and the model firing. If the vehicle being hit is within half range of the firer you'll get 2d6 penetration. The final position of the template is actually irrelevant to melta, only the locations of the vehicles hit matter.

It can lead to the illogical situation where the center of the blast scatters off the rear of the vehicle and while the rear isn't in half range the front is resulting in 2d6 penetration against rear armour (at half strength). But thems the breaks, and overall it works.

Wait, if a blast scatters to the rear, you still use the position of the firer to determine the armour facing, not the blast marker. You might be thinking of barrage weapons, though.

Actually, all blast markers do that for vehicles, not just barrage.

If the hole is not on the vehicles, the hole determines the facing.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

As JIdmah said - have a reread of blasts and vehicles.

Isn't barrage always side armour or is that only when the hole is positioned over the vehicle?

I misread - I thought he was talking about when the centre of the blast is still over the vehicle. For some reason I totally failed to read to "at half strength" comment.

Carry on

Barrage is always side armour when the hole is over the vehicle, otherwise as per normal blasts.
