I know, I know, there's a couple of threads on here already about wargame creation. But it was posting on one of those that kinda got my creative juices flowing, and I thought I'd see if other people thought my idea had merit

Basically, the setting is a Victorian era world, and the contest is between classical monsters and their henchmen, and monster hunters. Possible factions would be religious witch-hunters, the league of scientists, mad scientists, vampires, mummies, swamp things, mercenaries, wolf men, government agents, the alchemists guild, etc.

Think jolly old fellows in waistcoats, with monocles and top hats with steampunk weapons hunting down a mad scientist and his creations through an old dungeon, or London bobbies chasing vampires across a misty moor, or Alchemists stalking through an Egyptian tomb to defeat the Mummy and steal his secrets to eternal "life".

Some attached images should show you the kind of imagery I'm looking for.

The game would be in 28mm, with a group of individual models on each side operating as a team. It would be D6 based, with aspects of resource management involved (think Might from LotR or Focus from Warmachine and you're on the right track.) I'd probably use alternating model activation with cards, similar to the old Confrontation system. Dungeon games would probably use floor tiles like Space Hulk. The rest of the nuts and bolts can be figured out as time goes on, but there's no point worrying about it if the setting doesn't appeal to people

So, would people be interested in playing steampunk victoriana monster hunters?

Here's a steampunk specific ruleset that's coming out next year from Osprey.
http://www.ospreypublishing.com/blog/Osprey_Wargames_goes_Steampunk/

"In her Majesty's Name"

Rumor is that it may be based on the mechanics of "In The Emperor's Name", a free fan-made fast-play skirmish game set in the 40k world and written by the same author. A good thing in my book as that game's quite fun.

Also, quite a difference from Osprey's last published ruleset "Tomorrow's War" (by a different author) which is a fairly-crunchy, very-tactical hard-sci-fi ruleset.

Not that you should be dissuaded from pursuing you're own game, just be aware of what's out there or on the horizon.

I like this idea keep up with the fluff

Just an idea but what if the scientists make steampunk robots? also what about the classics of Gothic horror as special characters (such as Dracula, Frankenstein as well as van helsing and Sherlock Holmes, yes I know he isn't a Gothic horror type but it would be cool seeing him slay monsters ).

Night Lords (40k): 3500pts
Klan Zaw Klan: 4000pts

What is with all these steampunk styles going around? Is it a fad or is this like the new age of gaming?

Can't speak for others, but I've been a fan of the style since I first saw the Walt Disney version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea starring James Mason. I've recently got into Dystopian Wars (a great game from Spartan Games) and it got me thinking about the genre as it pertained to gaming

Ah it was just a curious thought, it feels as though a lot of people are getting into the style, even if it's not in war gaming.

Meh I think It always was there with its potential, it just never got the chance to shine until warmachine came out...

Im still waiting for a proper staempunk film to come out (with war involved of course).

Also I think its the fact the its potential has never really been exploited (as it dosnt have a strong figure or anything to base itself of, an example of which sci-fi has quite a few strong figures such as star wars and Ailens, predator for examples, and people are now starting to "sniff around" the idea).

Just my two cents ...

Chaos in Cairo and Chaos in Carpathia both have elements of what the OP proposed as well.

Steampunk has been around for quite some time, but it is becoming a good deal more popular in wargaming circles lately.

Its time has come. Like everything else, what was once old, is new again.

For some good comedy about steam punk, check out "The Guild". THAT stuff was funny!!!

Like I said, though- You'd better hurry and get on the clockwork bandwagon. There are a metric !@#ton of steampunk themed games out there right about .... now.

Don't be mad, but for my game, which is set 100 years in the future, has a similar style... not precisely steampunk, but just the fashion in general. My thought process is that fashion is cyclical, but we've slowly but surely become more casual, and that fashion in 2100AD could be retro, like we dressed in the late 19-teens and 20's. Three piece suits, top hats... but not steampunk... still current technology.
