Absolutely. Challenges are a great defensive tool against big, nasty characters. Especially ones that run alone or on monsters, or are not with unit champions.

Let's say Nasty Lord on a Dragon charges your unit. While he is doomed, you can have your unit champion issue a challenge. Since the Lord has no ranks to hide behind, and no one to take the challenge in his place, he must accept. But he cannot bring all his power against the unit, and you have a decent chance of winning through combat resolution.

Say a fast lord is mounted in something scary but you have 3 ranks and a banner. Challenge him out and beat him with combat res!

Only an idiot is going to charge a solo character into a ranked unit without the crown of command.

Challenges are pretty much all about the shenanigans. Trying to lock your disposable character into combat with his best character, and protect your mid-range characters. On the other hand, if you have powerful characters then working challenges is all about making sure your most powerful character doesn't get stuck in combat slaughtering some unit champion.

I think it's a bigger mistake to assume that you always get to do exactly what you want and use your units in their most ideal circumstance. Sometimes the best situation for your army, may require you to use units in what would be, according to the all knowing internet, a sub-optimal use of that unit.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

If you put a character/champion out on the corner of your unit and then get him into a challenge, your opponent can lose attacks against you- if they're only in base to base with a model in a challenge, then they cannot attack at all.

Although slaughtering a unit champion is going to be more effective for combat rez then beating rank and file, The great unclean one with bale sword for example.

For a ridden monster challenge is usually a bad deal. Doubly so when fighting a 1-wound unit champion.

Most of the time the rider will hit before his mount, and there's a pretty good chance the champ is dead before the monster's turn comes up. This equals to less combat resolution and a greater chance for the (Crown of Command -less) mighty hero to run off chased by goblins or whatever.

Had it happen to my Carnosaur-riding Saurus Oldblood:
Charged a unit of Empire's Inner Circle Knights in the flank after they had charged my Stegadon in their turn, got challenged by the champ and managed to deal exactly one wound on him with my Oldblood. The remaining Skinks failed to do anything, Knights hacked them down for easy combat ress, Stegadon whiffed and my mighty Carnosaur couldn't do anything because of the challenge.

Lost by two, I think, and my Carno-lord broke. Lucky for me the Stubborn and now Skink-less Steggie stayed put and kept the Knights in place long enough for my Carnosaur to rally and come back for another round
