I play Blood Angels, and I've got a bunch of leftover marine models. I don't really have any need for tactical marines, since I can use assault marines as troops. I don't really want these drop pods anymore, since I'd rather use a stormraven(s) to deliver dreadnoughts. And I have plenty of assault terminators already, and don't think shooty terminators work well with the Blood Angels.

So... what can I do with them? I figure my options are:
1. Paint them as some other specialist codex.
2. Paint them up as codex marines, using some nifty chapter.
3. Sell/trade them.

I'd like your help deciding what to do. I clearly prefer 1 and 2, but I could be convinced to go to 3 if you can tell me why it's a bad idea.

So, the questions are:
* Which of the above options do you think I should go with?
* If 1 or 2, which chapter do you suggest?

In terms of potential chapters, I'm looking for one whose playstyle would be nice and distinct from both Blood Angels and my other 40k faction, the Tau.

To help you help me, here's a list of what I've got. This is everything I own that isn't already covered in Blood Angels iconography:
* 2 Drop Pods
* 10 Ordinary Tactical Marines
* 2 Tactical Marines w/Flamers
* 2 Tactical Marines w/Meltaguns
* 2 Tacitcal Marines w/Missile Launchers
* 1 Tacitcal Marine w/Plasma Pistol
* 5 Assault Terminators w/Lightning Claws
* 4 Shooty Terminators (PF/SB, CF/SB, PF/AC, and PS/SB)

This would be a side project, so I'd like to avoid spending money as much as possible. That said, I don't mind the idea of picking up a box or stalking eBay for a while. For example, I'm well aware that I need at least one more shooty terminator to put them on the field. That's not a problem I also actually like sculpting and converting and have a pretty extensive bits box. What won't do is start ripping apart Blood Angels models. They are and will remain my primary marine army. This could be fun... provided it isn't stupid.

How can you ever have too many Space Marines?

Just add them to your Blood Angels army and give yourself flexibility. Can always field your Blood Angels as Codex: Space Marines too if you need a change.

Heck, if I truly had extra Space Marines, I'd start whipping up objective markers with casualties, or vehicle crew members just because who cares. But in your case, I think the best thing to do, especially if they are already assembled, is add them to the army, and give yourself the option to play different styles in the future.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

Just paint them as Blood Angels. You never know when you might want to have a change from your usual list. If you don't have different units, you can't do that.

And, as someone said, if you ever find yourself in an Apocalyse game, you have some extra bodies to throw on the table.

Be creative. I dunno, try and convert 'em into CSM. Try and make cyborg robots. Make Blood Angel corpses to serve as objectives.

If you don't like that they aren't all Blood Angel-y, you could always paint them as some Blood Angel successor Chapter and use them when you really need the extra juice.

Paint them up and use them when you are short a few points.

"Archon Yulliptidon sat apon a throne made of polished glass, which gleamed with magnificence in the rays of the dying suns, beautifully suspended above the the many razor sharp peaks that where Commorragh. The archon held within his hands a a delicate pyramid of sculpted crystal, from which emitted a faint glow, an echo of the soundless screams of pain belonging to countless tortured souls forever trapped within. The room in which the archon sat in was something like a throne room, but displayed apon the walls where helm of every color, but all the same in size and shape. Some bore eagles on their foreheads, and others still contained the decapitated heads of their previous owners. Two huge, beautifully carved iron double doors, engraved with intricate runes of pain and suffering, opened at the far end of the room, to reveal a tall, elegant dark eldar warrior, clad in armor made from bone and flesh. "lord Yulliptidon, you asked for my presence?" Said the arrival, " to what do I owe the pleasure?". The archon raised his elongated head, skin as pale as a full moon, eyes as vivid as a horrible nightmare. " I did not ask for you, Thrayon, I ordered your presence. Do not think to much for your self, for truly, you are not much past a feral that one would find on the streets. As for why I have ordered you to my palace, it is because their is a task that I wish you to preform. I wish you and you kabal to cleanse the imperial out fort of Sargosain Gastienagan." Thrayon was both aghast and interested at what the archon had just said. "Such a task would stretch my kabal to its limits, only a great reward would be enough to do a deed like this." Yulliptidon was outraged by the the proposal of a "great reward" by Thrayon, but did not let his anger show, hiding it with a cold smile that hid his evil intentions surprisingly well. The archon was was famous for never telling a lie in his life, but was very fond of veiled double speak, and this was no exception. "Do not worry, Thrayon, you shall receive what you deserve." Thrayon, happy with this outcome, left to carry out Yulliptidons task. Little did he know what was coming. Thrayon had done a thousand evil deeds, and what he deserved was a horrible death equal to to all those he had caused. Yulliptidons smiled. He was going to have fun."

Paint them as Blood Angels. Who cares. If they are AOBR marines you could even use for a Codex Space Marines list since the AOBR marines don't have any specialized marking that make them different.

You can paint them as some chapter that is closely cooperating with Blood Angels. That way you could use them together in an apocalypse game.

Sounds like a perfect excuse to start an angry marines army...

This is actually a neat idea. I get a little variety in my paint schemes, and I can use them as allies to the Blood Angels (that is, as more Blood Angels) in big games, or field them on their own, or field them on their own and use some of my Blood Angels to back them up (since they are allies, after all). Which codex I use can vary depending on my mood. The BA codex for when I'm fielding mostly BA with these guys as backup, the standard codex when it's all the allies, or mostly the allies with a few Blood Angels as backup.

Does anyone know of any chapters that famously cooperate with the Blood Angels?

Step 1: Paint marines as necrons
Step 2: Buy necrons codex
Step 3: ????????
Step 4: Profit?

In all seriousness though, the idea of painting them as an ally chapter sounds like a really cool idea. I don't know much about marines, but I'd much rather play against a guy who had an "allied force" instead of just some guy who fielded 5,000pts of plain ol blood angels.

Sounds like a plan! Honestly, I was going to suggest just making them more BA; even if these units aren't optimal now (though I'm in the middle of building a BA list which will make heavy use of Tactical Terminators, and plan to add Tacticals at some point as well) they may well become optimal later- this has a strong tendency to happen when GW releases a new rules edition or a new version of a codex. Having a rounded collection of models and units for your army is the best way of adapting easily to such changes.

I would look first at their Successors. Fluff-wise they make perfect sense, and visually they also often make a nice compliment. I painted up some Flesh Tearers for our Adepticon Team Tournament armies this year, and wound up LOVING how they look and how they complement my regular BA. I'm using them alongside the regular BA pretty regularly now. Lamentors are another really dramatic contrast (the yellow and the checks can be gorgeous, and yellow's much easier to paint nowadays since they introduced the Foundation/Base paints).

Second choice would be to not worry about the fluff, and just pick a chapter whose color/s go well alongside red. I wouldn't go Salamanders as the Red/Green thing tends to look too Christmasy. But yellow (Imperial Fists), white (White Scars or other), black (Ravenguard) or even blue (Ultras?) can make a great visual contrast and a really striking force. One of the most gorgous armies I ever played against was a SM Crusade army at the 2001 Baltimore GT. The guy had Ultramarines, Storm Lords, and Red Scorpions all in one army, with the same basing scheme and with Cresade markings/banners to tie them together. It was stunning and won best army.
