What is the Most commonly played army? I'm guessing tyranids and Space Marines.

"Archon Yulliptidon sat apon a throne made of polished glass, which gleamed with magnificence in the rays of the dying suns, beautifully suspended above the the many razor sharp peaks that where Commorragh. The archon held within his hands a a delicate pyramid of sculpted crystal, from which emitted a faint glow, an echo of the soundless screams of pain belonging to countless tortured souls forever trapped within. The room in which the archon sat in was something like a throne room, but displayed apon the walls where helm of every color, but all the same in size and shape. Some bore eagles on their foreheads, and others still contained the decapitated heads of their previous owners. Two huge, beautifully carved iron double doors, engraved with intricate runes of pain and suffering, opened at the far end of the room, to reveal a tall, elegant dark eldar warrior, clad in armor made from bone and flesh. "lord Yulliptidon, you asked for my presence?" Said the arrival, " to what do I owe the pleasure?". The archon raised his elongated head, skin as pale as a full moon, eyes as vivid as a horrible nightmare. " I did not ask for you, Thrayon, I ordered your presence. Do not think to much for your self, for truly, you are not much past a feral that one would find on the streets. As for why I have ordered you to my palace, it is because their is a task that I wish you to preform. I wish you and you kabal to cleanse the imperial out fort of Sargosain Gastienagan." Thrayon was both aghast and interested at what the archon had just said. "Such a task would stretch my kabal to its limits, only a great reward would be enough to do a deed like this." Yulliptidon was outraged by the the proposal of a "great reward" by Thrayon, but did not let his anger show, hiding it with a cold smile that hid his evil intentions surprisingly well. The archon was was famous for never telling a lie in his life, but was very fond of veiled double speak, and this was no exception. "Do not worry, Thrayon, you shall receive what you deserve." Thrayon, happy with this outcome, left to carry out Yulliptidons task. Little did he know what was coming. Thrayon had done a thousand evil deeds, and what he deserved was a horrible death equal to to all those he had caused. Yulliptidons smiled. He was going to have fun."

Tyranids aren't terribly common. Space Marines are by and large the most common army in the game.

If you aren't talking Codex, but rather army (as in, fluff specific army) then I think it might be a little murkier. There are indeed oodles and oodles of Space Marine armies, but there are almost as many Chapters as there are players, DiY Chapters being as prevalent as they are. In our area, loyalist Tau tie with Necrons for most populous army.

Just a heads up, the mods do NOT appreciate thinly veiled Tau hate threads, and will lock them so fast it'll make your head spin, so if that was your intent, might want to back out now

As for most played, it is without a doubt space marines. Which specific codex tends to vary on which ones are the newest, but to a guy like me, they're all the same, they just have slightly different abilities or points costs. Right now, I'd say space wolves, but in my area we have a lot extremely competitive players, so I doubt I play in a "normal" player group. In most areas I'm sure it'd be just plain old vanilla marines, with them being a starter set and all.

Close second would be IG. With GW's prices increases and just the general ease of understanding how the army works (they're dudes with tanks, pretty straightfoward) They make for an easy army to grasp as well as get cheap models for. I've been picking up IG tanks for dirt cheap all over the place, but that's because my club of roughly 15 people already has SIX IG players, not counting me. Plus, it doesn't hurt that with the strength of transport hammer right now, that IG will do very well, as they've got both great transports and about a million and one ways to kill them.

3rd would probably be orks. However, my area is wierd about this. I'm the first dedicated ork player to appear at my club in several years, and before that we just get a couple of guys who come in rarely and are jerks. I've played against orks very rarely, but I know they're out there. I'm sure at other clubs they're a dime a dozen, but a good ork player out here is VERY hard to find.

If we are talking about fluff sort of raised hand, if we are talking about play style not raised at all. I very seriously considered playing Tau, but eventually decided on IG simply because I really do not like walkers or battlesuits and battlesuits are pretty important for a Tau army.

Blood Angels seem to be the most common. Every single player at my FLGS has a BA army.....cept me. They have other armies as well, but they ALL have BA. Plus, BA seem to be the most common topic of threads on dakka....so there it is.

BA are a SM army with really nice models, and a lot of flexibility in how you can build/play them. There are two major common ways, but at least a half dozen other viable themes. I love my Chaos, but BA keeps me building and experimenting and trying new things like crazy.

I think globally you've got Eldar, IG, and Orks as the competitors for the second spot. Currently, I'd say Eldar have a low presence simply because it's the least playable codex of the three, but there's a lot of people who own an Eldar army and are waiting for a functional codex*.

Personally, I'd bunch all Space Marine codexes together since there's less difference between them than between the Codex: Craftworld (3e) craftworlds, with Grey Knights as the only one being distinct.

* Being able to play with a codex does not mean it's functional. Functional implies that there's several choices and that particular types of scenario do not inherently handicap you. Orks are very functional, but not necessarily top tier. Tau and Eldar have too few viable choices for all-comer set ups to be called functional.

I really need to stay away from the 40K forums.

Well if you think about it, there's probably more space marine players alone than there LOtR players. Add in the fact that it takes very little effort to "codex hop" between each of their 8 or so codexes, and sadly, this isn't surprising at all.

Yeah, I get that space marines are their bread and butter, but having half of your codexes be from the "rarest" faction in the game is still rediculous however you spin it.

But that's an arguement for another time.

So, SM are the most played army. Therefore, I will get sisters of battle as my next army, just to be different.
