Subject: How are the new Necrons?

I've always had a small thing for the Necrons, as I have a love of Ancient Egytian culture and I play TK in Warhammer Fantasy. Now that a new codex is out and there are some cool new models, I'm wondering if it's worth investing into a Necron force. What does Dakka think?

They are an outstanding, arguably top-tier competitive army which isn't space marines, they have a lot of unique and fun special rules, tricks, and units. They're also one of the only really competitive armies which doesn't default to mechanized builds.

I only know from playing my mates necrons. They are extremely difficult to kill. High toughness and constant resurection against all weapons is a huge advantage. Combined with lords equiped with resurrection orbs and ever-living; they can do this on a 4+ n if the lord stands the whole squad may stand even if wiped out.
Armed with warsyches they truly are fearsome, pratorians are str7 power wepaons, t5 and gain an extra D6 against tanks. Their main disadvantage, low I can be offset by combining them with wraiths whose whips reduce your enemies I to 1.
I'd say they can put out average amounts of firepower, both anti-tank and infantry; it their combination with incredible survivability and neat abilities that makes them killing machines. I can easily say that Necrons are the most effective army I have seen my friend use.

I'd say the new Necrons are really good. I just got in three games with them today, and won all three relatively easy. Actually surprised me. I'm liking the update more and more, and say they're worth investing in.

Lychguard come with the S7 power weapons, not praetorians.
And you are wrong about the whole squad being able to stand up if the lord survives. The RP rules specifically state that characters do not count as part of the squad for the purposes of resurrection, if the squad was wiped out.

One of the best things right now about necrons is that almost all of our stuff is in production now! All we're missing now thanks to the Scythes just being released is 2(3) HQs.

Could you clarify that? I'm not sure I'm following.
But yes, Newcrons are sexy and competitive. I think they might be next army.

I would definitely use two Triarch Stalkers, because they can TL your entire army.
But yes, a silver tide is a very viable list. Here's how I would do it:
10x Immortals w/ Tesla Carbines
1x Lord w/ Hyperphase Sword, MSS, Rezorb
... points = 250
10x Immortals w/ Tesla Carbines
1x Lord w/ Hyperphase Sword, MSS, Rezorb
... points = 250
10x Immortals w/ Tesla Carbines
1x Lord w/ Hyperphase Sword, MSS, Rezorb
... points = 250
10x Immortals w/ Gauss Blasters
1x Overlord w/ Hyperphase Sword, Phaeron, MSS, Rezorb
1x Harbinger of Destruction w/ Eldritch Staff & Solar Pulse
... points = 380
10x Immortals w/ Gauss Blasters
1x Overlord w/ Hyperphase Sword, Phaeron, MSS, Rezorb
1x Harbinger of Destruction w/ Eldritch Staff & Solar Pulse
... points = 380
1x Triach Stalker
... points = 150
1x Triarch Stalker
... points = 150
1x Monolith
... points = 200
I think that's 2k

This. This this this.
They're not as easy to grasp as some (mainly MeQ) armies, but are a balanced Codex with lots of viable units (and several weak units) that can perform at a high level, competitively. Without, As Mannahnin said, needing to be mechanised.

I think the bottom line is that they are indeed a viable playing option. If you want to start (or restart) a Necron army, you should be just fine.

They are pretty good...definately competitive...not top tier. They do come back alot and have some decent shooting. Aside from the wraiths with their whip coils, they go last against most armies and are pretty squishy. As mentioned above though, they do have some nice tricks (mindshackle scarabs and labrynth are cheap and if you get lucky, do a ton of damage) among some other trickery.
If you play someone who isn't familiar with them, you have a nice advantage.....they have a particular weakness vs.Space Wolf RP's just because of JOTWW, which removes them 66% of them time.
They have some fun concept builds though and I think the new models are pretty incredible.

I accidentally blundered into Necrons when picking an army (the whole Terminator thing) but am very happy I ended up with them. Lots of choices, easy to paint models, lots of variety in units and builds.
@azazel, well coordinated list, nice synergy with the stalkers. Have to say, though, that the monolith would be better as 3 annihilation barges. After all, this is the NEW necron codex . (it's just a little bit of mech - less than 10% - less than the Monolith )

necrons look cool, incredibly hard to kill, their vehicles are weak defensively when they suffer a penetrating hit but dish out a lot of damge, cept they are really slow and a low range can stuff them up against a long range army like Tau or fast army like the DE and Eldar.
