Hello all,

I'm making a backstory for my IG, and I was going to use a heavy nordic/viking theme. But since they have modern cities, I was wondering if anyone had seen any concept art of what a modern nordic building would look like. Skyscrapers, factories, houses, whatever. I'm just looking for some inpsiration to start designing these.

Um, they'll pretty much look like regular buildings. Unless you mean a modernized version of a stylised viking longhouse?

Like normal buildings. Only tourist attractions have the pointed arches and steep roofs that the ye' old Nordic longhouses had.

Yeah, I meant specifically if the viking style of building had survived to modern day, what might that look like?

That shot from Thor looked interesting. Maybe that could be the central palace of the cities.

Consider that the stuff in Thor's movie is as nordic as I am an Astartes.

Now, while still not nordic, I consider Rohan's castle of Meduseld more approximate. Imagine this in different metals, and add some pipes on the sides and a chime on the back erupting a black smoke.

I would just take some design principals from Viking structures and translate it into modern materials and size.

Maybe the Azgard design from Stargate SG-1 would help, if maybe a little too high tech.


There would probably be alot of stone, or artifical stone, and wood with intricate carvings. Mixture of Runic writing and Artwork. Dark's example of Rohan from LotR is a good example of this.

Large public Murals depicting great battles, persons, etc... Probably carved in wood, purely decorative of course.

Statues of the Emperor, depected much as Odin was. Other heroes, possably the Primarchs, as great figures holding up arches and etc...

The stuff from the Thor movie came straight out of Jack Kirby's head, where he imagined a fevered mix of Norse myth, alien weirdness, and golden-age-of-comics superscience. It's fun stuff, but about 5% based on anything Norse (if that).

I was going to do the wiseacre thing of linking to pics of Stockholm or Oslo or Copenhagen too.

The shoddy furniture is made by little children in third-world countries, Swedes want too much pay. ;-)

As for the buildings, remember that looks often depend on what's needed and what's available. What materials do these people have to build with? Do they favor any (wood, for example) in ornamentation or finishing touches? Is the climate harsh enough that they have better isolated and heated buildings than you'd find in the warm places of the world? Do they waste resources on having heating pipes running overland or have they been digging them down? Is it dark often and long enough that there's lots of lighting around, and what form does it take in that case?

Needs more this. Scandinavian AND grimdark (it even has god lasers)
