Title pretty much says it all. im asking this mainly because i collect cryx and want to do a pirate themed force but i dont want to have to use only the amphibious helljacks (though im still having a harrower) and i dont also want to be limited to what solos i want as i still want to use a warwitch siren.

this question has probably been asked a million times but i just wanted to see a good discussion on this to see what people think about it

It sounds like you probably want to take mortenbra's tierd list if you're willing to forgo piratey things

Her theme list is that you need to take 2 warwitch sirens and 4+ helljacks and then you get 1 point off all your helljacks. So you can have a list for 35 that is

Mortenbra,
Deryliss
2 Warwitches
7 slayers!

To be honest that tiered list is the only one i know that is actually worth doing for cryx.

We love what we love. Reason does not enter into it. In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That's as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.

Theme forces are worth doing if YOU think they are or the benefits of taking it outweigh the cons of limited selection(such as eKreoss' theme).

Most of them, however, don't do that.

If you have an idea for a list and it doesn't fit a theme, don't force yourself to do it.

i think that the pirate queens selection is way too limited and i still want to use some of the fun things like slayers and mecanithralls for her ability to kill models and gain focus

Skarre's tier lists are very focused. As someone said earlier, the Morty tiers may be more to your general liking.

That said, yes, a lot of tier lists are worth taking. However, some are not. I find pdenny's tier list depressing. Same with Easphyxious and his Cephalyx.

In the same way I've seen Scaverous Tier 4 lists do ridiculous things to people. As well as a Witch Coven tier lists that I loathe for it's ability to beat my head in.

It's all just extra flavor. Better off looking into the lists to see what fits you best.

No wargames these days, more DM/Painting.

I paint things occasionally. Some things you may even like!

Try out the theme lists if you fancy it but don't expect something awesome just because a few benefits are given out to you.

Asphyxious1 has a theme list and I wouldn't recommend it to people as it can't hit high defense. But I have played it and it works great as long as I recognize the weaknesses and compensate. I would love to try out all the theme lists possible for cryx but I feel like I won't have time.

If Cryx Theme Forces generally aren't worth doing, how should you go about building a Cryx army?

I mostly pick a warcaster and then choose things that go well with them. Or have an idea for a unit and build around the idea.

Theme forces are something to have fun with, sometimes competitively. If somebody is new to the game they shouldn't restrict themselves to this or that, they should be able to play what they want as they experiment.

Well it depends on if you want stuff that is competitive or not if not just get what you like the look of.

One thing that Cryx need IMO are Mechanithralls, they're cheap and pretty powerful and hard to kill if you keep them with a Necrosurgeon who can bring back 3 dead Mechanithralls at a time. Plus when you do bring them back you can do it in such a way that the will be in a position to charge when their unit activates. Also they have a unit attachment option of a brute thrall. They only cost 1 point and have 8 damage boxes and hit like a warjack. also they can keep your Mechanithralls counting as still there so you can keep bringing back Mechanithralls.

I always take the Deathjack as I love it. Very versatile and can’t really be stopped by disruption and can cast the warcasters spells. However at 12 points its expensive.

Seethers are good they're mat 8 get a focus for free, run and charge for free, have 3 melee attacks and can make a power attack for free if it hits with its attacks. Cant take much damage though

pDeneghra is a very good caster while fragile, she can take a unit out of the game fairly well unless her upkeep spell can be removed. All you need to do is cast crippling grasp and they can't run or charge or make special attacks and all stats bar RAT are -2. Her Feat will do the same but to everyone but will do RAT and also FOCUS. So it can be good for hitting hard or if things get on top of you it will limit damage for a turn. She can also debuff armour, make your units ghostly and has a AOE knockdown spell. plus she has stealth so all in all a pretty useful caster.

Skarlocks are good to as they can cast 1 spell from your caster costing up to 3 focusfor nothing.

You'll need bonejacks as they have an arc node something that is very useful for keeping your caster safe they're hard to hit but will die quickly when the blows connect.

No Cryx advice from me. I'm playing Cygnar, Trollbloods and Blindwater and so far haven't tried out any of the lists. I do want to though. The theme forces you can field and how they complement each other is one of the things I like about Warmahordes so much. Even if some of them have weird exceptions (I can't take Cygnar's one cavalry unit with their one cavalry caster?)

Tier forces generally are fluffy alternatives to list construction.

Sometimes the benefits outweigh the contraints of the Tier requirements, sometimes its not worth it.

Feel free to play in or out of tier with ANY caster no matter how good the tier lists are. Sometimes the tiers can make a caster feel too constricted and thus less enjoyable to play.

If you play Legion, I'd recommend checking out Abby's tier (fun, but has issues with lack of range) and eVayls tier 4 (Amazingly good, the only way I play her ) Rhyas' Rearguard alternate tier from the No Quarter Magazine seems pretty fun as well, but I haven't tried it quite yet.

I play Khador and eButcher's theme force is awesome. I get a 1 point discount on all my Doomreaver units and they become FA-Unlimited. It is an excellent list that only slows down when facing a shooty list like Retribution and Cygnar. Others it pretty much just mows down......

That being said, most theme lists are fun to try out but will not really work in tournament environments. Really in this game it all boils down to exactly how competative you want to be. Convention tournament player, Local God, or have fun and enjoy the game with friends type player.

One of the winning armies at Lock and Load was a PDoomy Runes of War theme force.

I know, because I run the exact same list, only not as well.

I really feel that the later the force book came out, the better the theme lists are. There was some serious codex creep there, but thankfully they are nonessential. If you don't believe me take a look at the retribution and cygnar theme forces: many duplicates required and less synergy between the caster and required units.
