I found a 2m by 1m piece of sanded and strong wood which has a hinge seperating it into two 1 by 1 pieces. I would like to develop this into a gaming board to put it atop a large existing tabl. For making the scenery, terain, hills, valleys, and anything else i might possibly need to make, can anyone give me an idea about how to tackle this through scratch-build methods, as cheap as possible. Thanks

Treat the board first. PVA mixed with emulsion. You can add texture at the same time. Sand, cat litter, grit, etc.
Use polystyrene reinforced with plasticard for buildings. or just polystyrene for geographic features. Use a PVA paint mixture to seal those after.
