Subject: Angels Infernus - Tactical Squad Ready for Deployment

Secret Inquisitorial Eldar Xenexecutor

I've been posting up some of my new test marines in the P&M (and then the Showcase) pages lately to try and get a feel for how well they will be recieved, I have always wanted to make something with marines given that they have some of the widest variety of models and rules out of the 40K armies (I include chaos bits here since I do love the spikes). Having worked out a test buiid, then a test scheme I managed to complete 3 marines to what I feel is a good pre-finish status (no decals applied yet but painted). Having been thrilled with how they turned out I made the plunge and invested a whole £25 into some more bits to continue the project, anyone who follows my P&M may have noted that by now I have a number of traitor guard and Gorkamorka orks under way, but this army will full fill my "hero" need in the 40K universe.
Working name for the chapter thus far is the Angels Infernus, founded from a faction of the Dark Angels that were separated from Caliban after the Heresy, and suffered a battering at the hands of an Iron Warriors company whilst defending a shield world called Bastion. Despite suffering heavy loses and increasingly degraded equipment the Angels of Bastion managed to slaughter their traitorous brethren, holding the walls of the Bastion fort through courage and a stalwart defence. Wherever the stone wall fell battle brothers stood side by side to fill the void, techpriests forming makeshift defences around them to create a living wall that their traitorous brothers siege warfare failed to pierce. When the battle was done and the Angels of Bastion reunited with the tattered remnants of their legion they found their primarch dead, half their brothers turned traitor and the home world in ashes. For close a century the brothers rejoined their legion, facing animosity from those who had defended caliban for what was perceived as an intentional absent during the Fallens mutiny. Whilst unwaveringly loyal when the opportunity came to form a succession chapter to the Dark Angels the brothers of bastion welcomed it, their new armour a battered steel not needing the vanity of chapter colours, they instead adapted a lighter armour class formed in the forges of the Bastion fort. Blood red reinforced lower armour and shoulder pads would signify their battle on Bastion that had united them, waist deep in the blood of their brothers and traitors their bond was forged, never to be broken.
The Angels Infernus became renown for surviving battles against overwhelming odds, adapting unorthodox techniques to hold positions others had called unholdable and surviving on little to no supplies. They have however earned the ire of make other chapters for their rituals of scavenging fallen armour and weaponry from friendly and hostile marines alike, more so when they march to battle adorned in the armour of fallen marines adorned with traitor symbols. The Angels feel no shame for this practice, they would never have survived Bastion without taking from those that assaulted them, they tread one foot in the light and one in the dark, all too aware of what happened to their brothers who refused to perceive chaos as a constant threat.
Currently completed I have the follwing:
Tactical Sergeant Lorexan
Tactical Marine - Battle Brother Hasechan
Tactical Marine, Battle Brother Antilan
And then Needing painting:
Plasma Gunner:
Heavy Bolter
More to come soon, 3 more half armoured tacticals and then a 5 man veterans squad for sternguard.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
A freshly assembled Devastator Squad, having suffered at the hands of the Iron Warriors siege warfare, those that would become the Angels Infernus learnt to value the constant barrage of missiles to wear down their opponents, most commonly using a combination of these and heavy bolters to crush the enemies will to fight.
Brother Lexian utilises the prototype RBL (Remote Barrage Launcher), designed to allow a battle brother full use of both hands whilst maintaining fire support. In such early stages of field testing he utilises an auspex to constantly monitor the systems output and combat effectiveness, noting it as a worthy replacement for a missile launcher if it were to enter full production.

Update time: I've managed to prime all of the models shown above and get ready on painting them up. First up is Plasma Gunner Specialist Garak, a leader in his own right Garak has never ascended beyond the rank of battle brother. Instead he is content to guard his sergeant with his life, risking everything to ensure the mission succeeds. He wears a traitor mark shoulder pad, a symbol of honour within the chapter having ripped it from his first traitor kill.
Obviously still WIP.

Cheers, oddly enough I hadnt seen that scheme before despite the fact that baring a change of shoulder pad I'd managed to nearly replicate it (Not sure if I'm feeling thats good or bad but it'll do). Pretty happy with how the guys are coming out and its not taking a week for a miniature, so given the low model count for most marine armies it looks to be a relatively doable job.

I really like these. Also I imagine the way you have written the fluff these may easily serve as chaos marines as well if you decided you waned to play both.
I think the cypher model would look great as part of your chapter.

I had considered the chaos theme when I first picked my marines back up again. However having made up a traitor guard force I do feel the pull of the "heroic" marine aspect, albeit with a slightly tarnished shine. I intend the chapter to be a "by all means" survivalist chapter fighting for the imperium, their recruitment is performed by abduction and trial by fire, their manufacture is done by prototyping and scavenging from others. Whilst I haven't touched on vehicle yet (painting and converting them is the bane of my existence due to lack of experience), dwelling on them a little I considered a more battered "armoured" rhino covered in spare plating and ablative side doors designed to cover marines utilising it as a fire base upon disembarking.
That will take some trial and error though, I need it to look scavenged and well worn in without landing in orky or chaotic. Automatically Appended Next Post: Due to a long day at work I havent really been feeling it with painting this evening, as such I've painted about half the torso of Battle Brother Archer. Bearing the heavy bolter for his squad Archer is unfaltering in his loyalty to the chapter, ready to suppress any who would seek to stand against his faith, notable engagements include the suppression of Maerien, a hiveworld in the throes of rebellion. Archer personally supressed a key access route for 2 days and 3 nights, slaughtering untold thousands of cultists and buying his team the time they needed to set charges to rid the imperium of this blight.

Battle Brother Archer is now half completed thanks to a bank holiday weekend, I felt rather industrious so I spent an hour this morning painting the rest of his upper half, spent more time on the metals with this guy to try and make them stand out (alot more clothe and flesh was drowning him in skin/red and hiding the metals). Really happy with how he is turning out, though he is a tad more shiny than the rest of the squad it isnt noticable unless under a really bright light.
Hopefully he'll be done by the end of today/tomorrow depending on how distracted I get.

Cheers, I like the less rigid feel of the miniatures at the moment, the scout kit seems to pose the models a little better and the heavy bolter that comes with the scout kit just looks better than the standard marine one to me.

Yeah, they are kinda mammoth in the upper body supported by pretty average legs, but aslong as all the firepower hits them from the waist up everything's fine. Automatically Appended Next Post: WIP on my Devastator Sergeant. Though in use prior to their split from the Dark Angels it was only when they became independent that the Angels Infernus adapted full use of Power Mauls. Their initial engagements were all against their traitor brethren, and the power maul allowed them to harness their rage against their fallen kin without the grace that the swords had required, crushing through their opponents skulls with ease.

WIP Update:
Devastator Sergeant is now nearing completion, just a plasma pistol and backpack away from another marine safely scurried away into the painted pile. Unfortunately after reworking a list 4 or 5 times it doesnt look like his squad will make it into a 500 point patrol force. Sad times.
Anyways, for C&C:

Current update on the WIP, I have completely finished the Dev sarge and am thrilled with how he came out, he's currently doing the round in the Showcase forum for feedback before he enters a nice comfortable retirement.
The Tactical squad however is rolling on slowly, I have completed the 6 models that I liked the poses and build for, and because I liked them the painting went well, wasnt a chore and ultimately left me with a model I love. However now I am stuck on the 2 bolter marines than for some reason I posed as though they were the rigid 3rd ed marines, these are by far my least favourite marines assembled so far and this is unfortunately impacting on my ability to paint them.
I'll try and post a WIP photo of one when I get the stomach for it, unfortunately tonight I'm just not feeling them and the photos I took highlighted just how little I liked them. Still I dont call a project a total fail until I'm done painting it, so they have every chance to become average looking models still!
Once these two are done I will be sat on an 8 man tactical painted (2 more to be constructed come pay day), and a 5 man Dev with the Sarge painted.

Yeah, Sadly I set myself the target of getting 500 point patrol force painted prior to play, largely because my games are few and far between and the painting itself usually sustains me. These guys were however a "I need atleast two more bolters" addin that I didnt really think through during assembly, and as such are litterally just the backup cast to the main body of the tactical squad, when it comes time for someone to take a bullet from the unit I'll make sure its one of these.

Having attempted to power through my painters block I have successfully completed the marine was was giving me trouble, leaving just one assembled tactical marine to paint to bring the squad upto 8 (2 more to assemble next week). He turned out alright and other than the silvers getting a little brighter on the most recent marines as the scheme evolves he fits into the squad well enough.
Current squad to date pic, newest guy is back left:

Time for a quick WIP update on the force, thusfar I have managed to resist picking up any new kits until my current ones are painted, and as agonising as this ruse seems to be I have made slow progress. As posted in the Showcase a few days ago my tactical squad is currently standing at 8 painted, to be added to with my next kit, I have also completed the Dev Sarge, and now am two arms away from finishing painting the mobile missile deployment platform (MMDP) Operator, or in game terms the missile launcher Dev.
First up we have the MMDP Operator:
And then the finished Tactical Squad
So far I'm making OK time, though I a trying to pick up the pace a little.

I really like the use of scout legs! It actually looks more 'realistic' (if there is such a word in the 40k universe! ) than normal marines keep up the good work!

Well with my birthday having come and passed I have managed to scrounge together the money to come close to finishing my patrol force, in reality I could have done it cheaper but I wanted to do it my way, and as such I am a mere 1 thunderfire cannon away from a playable marine 500 point force.
Painting however can now commence full force, I had been idling with painting up my devastators to ensure consistency in my colour scheme but now I have usable models once more I've taken it as a chance to get some serious colours down. Ready for paint I have my master of the forge, 2 heavy bolter servitors and a 5 marine sniper scout squad, all of which I hope to have painted within the next month.
To kick things off I have been working on my Master of the Forge (techmarine model) most of today and have made reasonable progress. The servo harness is still unglued to let me paint as much of the model as possible as well as possible. He's currently looking a little bit like Iron Man but I wouldnt say that is the worst thing in the world.
C&C, advice always welcome.

I think he looks sweet as he is right now. Granted, your squad colour scheme is just like the Techmarine adeptus mechanicus colour scheme. Thus, it makes your techmarine a bit too rank-and-file. Perhaps add some crazy details on his harness and weapons. I have some some nicely done hazard stripes on the servo arms. :-)

CHeers, I know exactly what you mean with him blending in a little too well with the rest of the army. I had tried to lighten the red to make him more defined however it blends too well with the squad around him. The gold helm with differentiate him from any of the other techmarines in the army.
The current army so far is this:
Need add in 2 more tactical marines, 1 more devastator and a thunderfire cannon to be field legal (Devastators not being fielded but I need to finish the squad).

I think your paint scheme looks a little similar to Word Bearers but I still really like it. I am also in the middle of converting up a lot of chaos/loyalist marines using the BT and DA upgrade sprues. They look great but I havent started painting yet.
