my friend is starting dwarfs to play my skaven and he decided to make a fun close combat list
not sure how but it beat my skaven list
and he wants to know any changes he should put in to play in a tournament if any
so here it is

dwarf lord 273
shield, shield bearers, rune of cleaving, rune of striking, rune of fury, rune of resistance, master rune of spite

runelord 263
shield, master rune of balance, rune of fortitude, rune of iron, rune of stone

thane 145
battle standard bearer, Strollaz's rune

20 longbeards 290
shields, full command, rune of battle

20 longbeards 310
full command, shields, Rune of sanctuary x3

20 longbeards 290
shields, full command, rune of stoicism

20 dwarf warriors 205
shields, full command

20 dwarf warriors 205
shields, full command

this comes in at 1981 but unfortunately is illegal as he spent too much on lords for 2000
not sure what to do about that

3000
1500
1500
3000 Wood Elves
2000 High Elves

Not only was the lords illegal, but I'm fairly certain there can only be one unit of longbeards unless there is a special character in the army (don't quote me, I do not own an army book).

The book says you cannot have more longbeards than warriors.

Malifaux masters owned: Guild(Sans McCabe), Outcasts(Sans Misaki), Arcanists(Sans Marcus)

Can't you go one over if your army is led by a character with Royal Blood?

Yes you can. The list is legal.

However, it's pretty bad. 0 Warmachine support means he's gonna have to rely on WS5 S4 to win his fights. Which won't.

Without ANY great weapon units, this list has poor damage output and mediocre defensive capability.

Eldarain is correct re: Longbeards.

I think the easy fix here is to drop the Rune of Fortitude off of the Runelord. Should be healthily under the cap.

These twenties of warriors will be tricky to play with. They might do the trick, but I think it will take some really clever play. One (or even all) of the longbeard units can be traded out for hammerers, which might make it a little more viable.

There's also very little hitting power in here- heaviest bruiser is the 5 str 5 from the lord. Armored knights and monsters are going to be awful to fight against. I've been considering a combat build myself, but I think you need slayers, or the Dwarf Lord needs to be kitted out to down big stuff/tank hard stuff.

I would be interested in seeing what you come up with. I've always liked Dwarfs but between the model range being predominantly metal (at the time) and the seeming dependency on gunline style lists I've never started up a force.

I agree totally. But if you want a list that is a solid combat list (I did one before, even though it was only 1000 points), miners come in handy when fighting is thick, heck once I won a game with only 8 miners a Thane and three thunderers when playing Skaven. The best runes to take are either the Master rune of Gromril (1+ Save!) or the Master Rune of Alaric the Mad (no armour saves allowd to be taken). Have a Giant Slayer regiment as they'll chop up anything ugly enough. At least take a unit of thunderers or an organ gun as they are pretty damned useful.
You can only have 1 unit of Long Beards to 1 unit of Warriors, so take a hoarde of Warriors, with a small back up unit, then 2 units of Long Beards (I take 50 warriors as 1 unit and then a small 10-15 unit of Long Beards). Combat can be tricky and ugly for these little guys but there is plenty available. Ironbreakers, Miners, Hammerers, Slayers and many more. Dragon and Daemon Slayers with Runes are amazing!

If you have a Dwarf Lord, who is of Royal Blood, you can take 1 more unit of Longbeards than Warriors.

2 Warriors to 3 Longbeards with a Dwarf Lord is perfectly legal.

@Eldarain: I'm looking to put something together as a trial list- the sticking point is the anvil right now. Too include or not...

Baxter, there's some interesting (i.e. atypical) advice buried in there. 'Leech is (still) correct about Royal Blood, though.

I can appreciate Dragonslayers, but don't find Daemonslayers (or Giantslayers for that matter) to be especially good value, and am also surprised to see the Master Rune of Alaric recommended- but think you might be on to something in a combat list.

What kind of kit do you put on your Daemonslayers? How many Giantslayers do you take?

I usually take 10-15 Giant Slayers with the full command and for the Giant Slayer Rune of Alaric the Mad, and 2 Runes of Fury. That way you get 2+ Attack and the opponent get's no armour save. I use it against mainly Chaos and Vampire Counts. VS Elves I use Rune of Striking, that way the Elves are dead in a matter of seconds.

Needs Cannons at least. Failing that I guess Miners and Rangers. Also cant you just slide those warriors next to each other and make them hordes

Logans company 4000 pts
3000 pts
2500 pts
Dwarf 3000 pts
High Elf 2500 pts

I concur! "makes me feel smart saying that "

Dwarfs and Guns go together as, Oreos and Milk. but im sure there
are other ways to build an army of Stuntys.

Thunderers are +! they hit better then X-bows, but less range. but its up to you/or your friend.

I always had a love for the Dwarfs.

I don't see a small unit of thunderers doing anything. When playing against them, I always thank my opponent for the free victory points.
I'd love to see some Dwarf army lists that you guys play that work.

i've got a ton of dwarves in boxes, never built, cause i never had an army list I liked.

I think you need a cannon or something just to take out enemy artillary and large monsters etc.

I've never seen slayers played except for small units of 5 and they were pretty easy to beat, but having them played as wound makers to flank other units might work. Aren't they skirmishers mainly
?
