Hey guys,
I just recently stumbled across Mordheim and after looking into some more I began to like it more and more. Free rules, not a lot of miniatures and what seems like an almost cult following with the people who play. Now I want to start my warband but before I buy anything I have a few questions.

Since it is no longer a GW sponsored game do I need to use the mini's?
And if not could you gentlemen recommend some companies that make nice dwarf mini's, I was looking at Reaper Mini's but I compared the prices to the GW ones and they are the same price, the only difference is GW gives me a few more minis. So any input on which ones I should go with would really help.
Also is the dwarf treasure warband a good place to start?
And the only place that I can play would be at my local GW store, would I be allowed to play there even if I'm not using the GW minis or would they not care because they don't support it anymore.

Thanks for any help guys

Even if it was, you would not need to use them unless you planned to play at a GW store or event (or you are playing some people who want you to use GW models)

Not really into dwarves, but here are a few:

http://www.hfminis.co.uk/shop?category=miniatures~dwarves (should be able to get these from a US retailer easily enough)
http://www.shop.microartstudio.com/ (there are a few dwarves on there)

Otherwise check out http://www.thewarstore.com/cgi-thewarstore/sb/productsearch.cgi since they will have a few ranges in one place.

Some stores allow specialist games, some don't. Some will limit them to times when the store traffic is low. Check with your locals. However, it is unlikely any will let you play if you are using non-GW models though you may be able to sneak a couple through.

Getting into Mordheim is not to bad, seeing you can just start out with a standard warband of heroes, and add warriors as you go. If you have any warhammer fantasy figures use those. Most times they have more character than the actual Mordheim figures. Why not get a few friends involved in the game, create a 4x4 table with terrain at your house. Then you can field any figures you want. I have a small group I am getting excited about the game here locally. I am in the process of making the terrain and getting the board squared away. Also the great thing about terrain, you don't have to build a lot of expensive pieces, there is plenty of card stock terrain you print out and put together floating around on the net.

Thanks guys!

Now would the regular fantasy boxes work the same? Because those are cheaper and have more guys but I'm not sure if its going to have all of the guys I need.

I currently have a skaven battle box.. It will have everything I need to create a warband, separate from the rest of the guys in there.. You can piece maille it together from bits sites if you want.. Since all your heroes will have names you can just write it on there base.. I try and keep the WYSIWYG pretty spot on when I first set them up.. But try and make them unique in some way, with bits, or gs.. Dwarfs are really easy to convert and if you get a box of dwarf warriors and throw in there a special character, you can covert to your wildest dreams..

I definitely use "regular" GW miniatures as opposed to the limited selection Mordheim offers. None of my opponents have ever had a problem with this. We tend to run a league through the month of October each year and there are roughly 16 who play. It really is an excellent game, with a pretty neat rewards system.
The warbands tend to be pretty balanced. The word on the street tends to be that Skaven are broken and people cry about slings, but really those are the same sort of people that cry about any army. There are plenty of work arounds, you just have to learn the rules and how to work them. The one warband I've seen really destroy are the shadow warriors. Personally I run Carnival of Chaos, lots of Nurgly fun.
Veteran fantasy players tend to not lay down enough terrain. Essentially litter the entire mat with it, and you will still be fine. It is amazing what your little minis can do mobility wise in this game.

No madam, 40,000 is the year that this game is set in. Not how much it costs. Though you may have a point. - GW Fulchester

We play Mordheim at my local GW and most of us just bought a box of fantasy (Empire Militia for my Reiklanders).

We have a dedicated table for it with just one rule "Painted and Based".

Finally the dwarves are silly. their biggest weakness is speed but that is really just it (break through is very very silly).

Sorry for the bump gents but I have one last question.
Do you think it would alright if I used some of the Lord of the Rings miniatures for Mordheim? They are cheaper than fantasy and they are still GW so I could probably use them in my local GW store.
Thanks!

It should be fine, but the miniatures are much smaller than normal fantasy figures. I thought about doing dwarfs with LOTR figs, but compared it to a normal sized dwarf and thought against it. Try reaper mini's they have a excellent selection of dwarfs also..

In my area, a lot of players for mordheim won't play against the dwarf treasure hunter warband, as they can tend to be a bit overpowered.

Otherwise, just do like ruff said and buy a box of dwarf warriors. If you want to do a human warband at any point, the empire militia box is literally the exact sprues that came in the starter box for mordheim for the human side, and the skaven nightrunners is the other set of sprues that was in the starter box.

To answer one of your questions.

The Dwaf treasure hunters warband list is an Excellent way to play dwarfs officially. Using LOTR models or even warhammer fantasy models it all good too. If you really want to play in a GW find out if they play specialist games, if so, your going to have to get all Gw mini's unless your store allows non GW mini's (Very rare)

If your going to play at a FLGS i stick to my previous paragraph but you can remove the part about non-gw mini's. For the full listing of Mordhiem rules you can find them on the GW website or in this thread "Specialist Games PDF Links"

If the game is "unsupported" Store rules still apply unfortunatly. On the plus side, becuase all the rules are "free" and available, we can openly discuss the rulebook / rosters etc. So if you get stuck, feel free to post away

You can have a full size, WYSIWYG, good looking band with the new GW multipurpose boxes.

I made 90% of my Reiklanders (that you can see in my galery) with one box of 'Empire State Handgunners / Crossbowmen', one box of 'Empire State Troops' and one 'Empire General'. The rest of them were second-hands that I bought in a FLGS (metal minis).

40K - 2000 pts World Eaters
40K - 250 pts Khorne Daemons
Mordheim - one Reiklanders band
Mordheim - one Beastmen band
