My dad has been running for congress (As a Democrat) in the 5th District in Virginia, as his son I have been to number of his rallies.
Now let me outline the 5th district for you, it runs all the way from North Virginia down to the North Carolina Border.
This district has been fethed over so hard by the Tea Party it's not even funny, the current congressman is the son of the very wealthy owner of a Uranium Mine, as trust fund baby. Never had a real job in his life and he is to the right of Rick Santroum.
Several of the counties have less than a 50% high school graduation rate, some below even 40%.
And the thing is, the people just are fine wallowing in poverty and failure, they continue to support people who have no interest in helping them.
Even worse is that the Civil Right acts might not even have been passed down there, everything is still so segregated, if your black and go to the wrong place you will be harassed or beaten. My dad needs to attend Black Churchs simply because you can never get a bigger gathering of them because the white people are so abusive.
Then you have the holocaust junkies. I was at a rally were a lady was telling everyone that gay people needed to be put into camps so they cannot breed to create more gay people. Looking past this already ridiculous idea that gay people are produced from gay people, this lady was basically supporting concentration camps.
I swear, this is just horrifying. How the hell can we call our selves the land of opportunity when we are so freaking fethed up like this?
"The Imperium is nothing if not willing to go to any lengths necessary. So the Trekkies are zipping around at warp speed taking small chucks out of an nigh-on infinite amount of ships, with the Imperium being unable to strike back. feth it, says central command, and detonates every vortex warhead in the fleet, plunging the entire sector into the Warp. Enjoy tentacle-rape, Kirk, we know Sulu will." -Terminus
"This great fortress was a gift to the Blood Ravens from the legendary Imperial Fists. When asked about it Chapter Master Pugh was reported to say: "THEY TOOK WHAT!?""
Just one point, how do gay people breed? I'm not a biologist but i'm pretty sure that doesn't work.
Exactly, the population in Southern Virginia has very very bad education, not to mention the fact they have been fed lies by the Tea Party for several years now.
It get even worse when people talk about how we need to revolt if Obama gets elected again.

I am revolted by them, but it's not quite the same thing.
Robert Hurt pretty much defines career politician, not that being a successful officer is much different, but one of them is laudable and the other is the bane of honest people everywhere. I only remember him because I was genuinely surprised that he beat that other guy who was backed by the NRA and the VFW.

Pretty much this. Hopefully he can manage to get in and metaphorically beat the stupid out of them. The cruel reality though is the current will probably find a way to buy himself back in again and continue to slowly feth the area more. I'm not sure if they exist anywhere, but they should be made to do an exam to prove they are capable of running something properly before being allowed to run. No more idiots with money, winning cause they managed to trick more idiots into voting for them...

QFT.
The Tea party really surprise me when they get any kind of support, they seems like complete children when in debates and even letting them do what they do by themselves.
i feel really sorry for you having to live with them in charge but hopefully your dad wins his election.
Currently debating whether to study for my exams or paint some Deathwing

You live near the Shenandoah Valley, its not really the country its just that you live in backwoods Virginia, trust me there is a vast change in diversity the farther west you go in Virginia and once you reach the Blue Ridge mountains you really don't see anymore minorities.

Yeah it's a bit like that in Arkansas. (not the racism part, but the radical conservative Obama-haters part. Luckily it is slightly more liberal where I live.)
I wish your dad luck, we need more people in the government who actually care.
May the the blessings of His Grace the Emperor tumble down upon you like a golden fog. (Only a VERY select few will get this reference. And it's not from 40k. )

Well, except for all the Appalachians of course.
Eh, its rather tough to say all together because I haven't found much of any minority out there. Although I did find a service station owned by somebody with the same last name as me.
Its depressing, i love the republican idea of less government, less taxes, more freedom but its hard to like that idea when you've got candidates like that, however i'm no fan of that public healthcare noise, or the current state of welfare. Based on what your telling us though, i wish your father luck and hope everything turns out alright for everyone down there.

Was it this woman?
Also: yeah, I agree; West Virginia is the worst place in America.

Thats a big part of the problem though. Some of the people that DO care and get elected get caught up in all the political garbage and end up not being able to get anything productive done. A old gov't teacher of mine got elected to State Legislature a couple of years back and found out right quick like there was no quick and easy way of helping his voters out. To much back scratching 'if you vote for this we will vote for young idea' junk going around. Nothing much will change unless we have more of an overhaul than just a couple of new faces going in every now and then.
GalacticDefender wrote:I wish your dad luck, we need more people in the government who actually care.
What if the people don't want a government to take care of them? What if they are happy with their life and don't care about more welfare benefits, or getting free health care, or any of the other promised benefits?

Don't be silly biccat. Some people, like the uneducated backwards Appalachians need smart people like the ones in the government to make these important decisions for them. They simply don't know what's best for them, so someone else needs to step in and protect them from themselves!

I'd rather vote for Nyarlathotep or Cthugha. Cthulu just seems lazy.
The squamos and rugose ticket... I like it

It is sarcasm, but at its heart its true viewpoint of others espousing control over the progs.
