Is there any way to minimize the cost for a noob who's still studying and presently jobless ? I have money, that's clear, but since it's kinda hard to find someone who ain't asking for a full time employee, and that I have the gym and my loan for university to pay, it is hard to find money for W40k. Seriously, it would rahter be easier for me to just finish my Menoth army (50 pts), but I've always like the W40k universe, and I know I will regret it if I die before having the chance to assemble a World Eater army and to scream BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD while playing against another player.

Buying secondhand units is the way to go I think. If you've got bitz and stuff to trade you can make deals that way as well.

By secondhand, do you already assembled and painted units ?

Yeah, ebay would be a good start. The Swap Shop on here may also be useful for you. There isn't a good way, that I know of, to re-assemble models without risking breaking something important, but stripping paint is fairly easy to do.

Also, learn how to use plasticard, greenstuff, and a hobby knife. 40k has a lot of room for DIY work, from kitbashing and bitz ordering all the way to scratchbuilding. Of course, you'll need time to learn the skills, and you'll need time to apply them. If you're a person who has a lot more time than money (like me), it's the best way to go.

buy from ebay. ebay is a buyers market and you can routinely buy armies for around half price if not less. usually for unpainted armies your looking at about 100 bucks for every thousand points. if you want a painted 2000pt army you will probably spend 300+ depending on what army and how it is painted, usually maxing at 500 as long as its not painted by a golden demon winner or some studio.

you could also try other games miniatures. mantic makes the equivalent of imperial guard, orks, and squats for their game called warpath. they are true 28 mm so they are a bit smaller then 28mm heroric that GW uses. but the good thing about them they are prices about 50 % less. just not as many options for poses and customization. IMO i think they look fine but you will get the hardcore GW people who are like BLASPHEMY n such. as long as your buddies dont care about you using other minis then its fine. you cant use other games minis at a GW store though, they will ask you to stop or leave.

there is also the buy and sell forums on here and bartertown, BUT i personally dont trust bartertown because i dont trust trading with people i dont know, if you get what im saying. bartertown doesnt have the same protection for trading as buying and selling on ebay with paypal and ebay buyer and seller protections.

hope this helps you out.

Keep in mind that some people may look askance at you if you are always buying off of Ebay, especially if you play at a location that sells 40k merchandise. I own secondhand models, so I'm not throwing rocks, but there are those out there who take a very negative view of always buying castoff armies off the internet and then using the gaming space down at the local store and never dropping so much as a nickel there. I think a modicum of 'pay where you play' should be used, provided you play in a store location. If you play in a private location then definitely cruise the internet and find secondhand armies on the cheap.

As well as learning the skills of modeling greenstuff and ect. you can also buy bits online on the cheap. It's a bit like buying booster packs for magic, you're never really sure what exactly you'll get, but it can be some really decent stuff for really cheap.

Well, let's take a moment to explain this :

Currently in Quebec, the High school drop out is kinda the typical kind of person you find. 2 on 3 people is a high school drop out. Plus, we have a load of immigrants. I am currently studying full time at university. Soooo. If 2 on 3 people is a high school drop out with no perspectives of future and we have a load of immigrants, why the hell would a business owner or a store hires me part time when there are thousands of guys just begin to have full time and that are ready to sell their soul to work for the rest of their lives at place like Wal-mart or Sears ? I had a job recently, at Barbie's Restaurant. But even then, I have a student loan to pay at Scotia Bank, plus the Gym (hey, ain't because I live in a shat hole country I must be a pile of crap physically). The reason why I was able to have a job as a dish washer was simple : universities are currently on their biggest strike ever against the government (the biggest strike ever in Quebec history) because our prime minister is an a-hole of the extreme right-wing (so this give me almost full-time liberties except for when I teach at a cegep near my house since I'm in an informal teaching program), and the current dish washer had just quit without warning the very same evening I applied to he place. I did 1 month, and after realizing my boss was an idiot, having being yelled at by these stupid Indians cooks (and yelling back), having being forced to do the job of almost everyone (since the boss is an idiot, he considered that a dish washer should also be the one to collect the plates from their dropping stations, to clean the whole kitchen area and even the one to help move things, rather than the boss boys), I realised I preferred to quit my job rather than being taken for a little piece of crap that was doing everyone job but yet looking with disregard since my job was ''dirty''. Hell, most of these people we're high school drop out, and they looked down on me like if I was some kind of third rate individual, while in actuality, I'm a university student with a general grade of A- . If this is the kinda hell I am supposed to endure to have a job, to hell with it.

Seriously, it was like being an Eldar surrounded by Orks who thought I was the dirty and stupid one.

If you can't cope with your boss being an idiot, your WH40k army will grow very, very slowly. You are not going to be admired for being a good student, quite the opposite. Unless you suck up a little bit of your pride and stop blaming everyone else for your faults, you simply will have to live with the fact that you won't be able to afford as much as someone who does.

Take that from someone who worked at McDonald's during college, that job blows just as much as the one you described.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

What is worse ? Being poor, or being another worker-consumer slave of idiots and corrupted politicians ? Anyway, I ain't really poor, since I'm still welcome in the home of my parents. It's just that I have limited options.
...
Oh yeah...
That means I'm poor.

Anyway, it's just that I don't like working hard while the boss boys are eating pizza and nachos in my face, and at the same time comparing the physical mensurations of the waitresses. Hard working isn't a problem with me. What is a problem with me is inequality of efforts and rewards. If I work hard, the others should also work hard. If I make alot of money, the others should also make alot of money, if they at least work as hard as me.

But to go back to the topic, I think the Blood God has heard my prayers :

Wow. So you live at home with your parents, go to a university, refuse to work for an "evil" corporation, and have given up on the job market because "stupid" people and immigrants will get the job anyways? Kids these days. Want everything handed to them (occupy?).

When I was in high school I worked in the fields with other immigrants and picked corn. I was able to buy my first car with that money.

Two days after I graduated from high school I joined the military and made far less than minimum wage. Six years later I got out and worked in factories and warehouses for minimum wage and no benefits. I refused to be unemployed and took any job I could get wether it was shoveling crap, loading trucks, working fast food, or everything in between. Eventually my hard work paid off and now I can afford things like hobbies.

Stop whining about not having money for 40k and get a damn job. And you don't know what poor is so stop being a little

Pretty much, this...

And if you have enough money for the gym, but don't have a job, why don't you have money for a hobby?

Well I made my money for the gym (300 for one year), and because it came first in my list of priority (when I don't exercice, I physically feel bad and tired :S)

As for the previous poster, I didn't intended any disrespect toward your previous achievements. I also worked before the last job I have just quitted, I ain't the lazy you might think I am. It is just that my studies are quite expensive, and because of them, few people want to hire me because I ain't capable of giving full-time. I have worked for wal-mart the last summer. I was doing 50 hours week, and when university started back, they kicked me out, siomply telling me they needed someone with more time to give them. It's the story of my minimum wage career : I get a job during summer, when school start back, I get kicked out. And when I start looking for a job during school, I ain't capable of giving full-time so people just don't hire me. Been like that since 2006. So in a way, the only thing that is really stopping me from making money is my studies, and seriously, should I stop going to university to find a work in a factory or warehouse to make money ? The reason why I still live with my parents are the same. I have to choose : get a job and get my own place, money and stuff, or study and stay with them, and work when someone accept me for summer. I ain't that easy as a choice, but I decided to go to university like that I could do a job I really like.

As far as this thread is going, I think I have offended to many people. Could someone please close/block this thread ?

If money is tight, the answer is don't. Just skip 40k until you get on your feet financially.

Witht the current state of things in Quebec (the strike of universities and cegep, the lack of employement, and our stupid Prime Minister Jean-Charest), I feel as if I'm never gonna be able to start this awesome hobby before I reach my 30's-35's :S. If only I had decided to become a drug dealer like my friend rather than choose to try to become a college teacher.

Sorry, you aren't trying hard enough. I've found my friends plenty of jobs at various Universities. Universities are hiring machines. They rarely advertise outside of the school's website, but there's never a shortage. They have dozens of positions up at any given moment, there's very little competition for them and they prefer hiring students. It's a no-brainer.

If you want a cheap way to play, just use Vassal. Just don't show up to a board with Lego figures and explain to the other players that its your Prime Minister's fault.
