I love how people, all from a different country, feel they have carte blanche to infer the OP is lazy and would get a job if only he wasn't. He asked how to collect 40k on the cheap, not what people thought about the unemployed. If people feel the need to vent their ignorances there is an Off Topic section, you can make a thread if you like, it won't seem like quite such a personal attack if you do that.

To answer the OP you should try getting really badly painted stuff on ebay, and strip it back, but remember the best thing to have on ebay is patience. Also, what army do you collect? You'll find armies that aren't flavour of the month can be got a bit cheaper.

B. Warhammer is expensive. Gyms are expensive. Why don't you stop going to the gym, start playing warhammer and do exercises at home? Floor space is free, and pushups/pullups/situps are the bread and butter of working out.

C. Compared to the Orks, Eldar are stupid. The Orks didn't create a Chaos god. Which race is still doing well after 20,000 years, and which race is barely surviving on spaceships with a demon god waiting to eat their souls?

D. Your seriously complaining about not getting to start the hobby before you hit 30's? Really?

Well I ain't really good at waiting, and it wasn't my intention to troll :S Anyway, the Blood God smiled on me today, just about an hour ago, a grocerie store that's ready to employ me, so anyway, don't really care anymore. Thx to those that answered me kindly, as for the others, burn in the warp.
Oh, and I was prefviously training at home, and the results are nowhere near to those I've gain when training at the gym. One week and I've lost 10 lbs and feel way better physically. Ain't saying working-out at home is useless and training at a gym will make me Hercules. It's just that for some people home training isn't enough. Plus, my family hate it when I train at home.

You seriously think people should respect you for being a student? No-one cares. Right now you don't know anything about anything. This attitude is why I've always looked down on most students, even when I was a student. Those high school drop outs have more work experience and life experience than you do. Sort the attitude and get some decent work experience (even if you have to work for free) or you won't be getting a job when you graduate. Why should someone hire a university graduate with an entitlement attitude and no actual work skills over a high-school drop out that actually knows how get stuff done?

Why not look at some alternative games that are written by gamers for gamers.
Not by corperate influence for shareholder profit.

There are a load of great games that have free to down load rule sets.(And let you use minatures from various manufactureres.)

Most can provide a great gameing experiance for a fraction of the cost of GW s40lk and WHFB.

Well first off it depends what army you have. You have to buy firepower sometimes instead of pretty. If you collect irks this is easy. You can just add on weapons. I have recently built something called 'da black toof'. I bought loads of stuff off an eBay store really cheap: the blitz store.
Basically second hand or in pieces.

Oh and anybody out there looking for cheap firepower check out eBay within the next month and you might find my black toof up for sale. Oh and I'm selling all of my bosses and infantry. Brand new, unbuilt just spray painted rady for assembly and painting.
Figures include
Ghazghkull thraka
Kaptin badrukk
Boss snickrot
Boss zagstrukk
A commandos squad
And a tank busters squad

All figures are metal and come with appropriate bases

I think a modicum of 'pay where you play' should be used, provided you play in a store location. If you play in a private location then definitely cruise the internet and find secondhand armies on the cheap.

i have an understanding at my GW. i but the paint/glue/books and the occasional unit there, but the bulk of my models come from ebay/another store that charges 75% of retail. i told him "listen i don't want the store to shut down so i'll spend here when i can but i just can't afford to pay 25% more just to help the store." he was understanding, which he should be since i've spent over $270 there in just paint and books in the last 2 months.

my advice with this hobby as with any other hobby is to find ways to save money, support your store but don't feel bad when you buy a $66 land raider for $50. money is money, if the store will match the price then give them the business, if not, do what you have to do

Two days after I graduated from high school I joined the military and made far less than minimum wage. Six years later I got out and worked in factories and warehouses for minimum wage and no benefits. I refused to be unemployed and took any job I could get wether it was shoveling crap, loading trucks, working fast food, or everything in between. Eventually my hard work paid off and now I can afford things like hobbies.

Stop whining about not having money for 40k and get a damn job. And you don't know what poor is so stop being a little

Reading comprehension fail. If you read his post again what he was angry about was the fact that he was made to do several different peoples jobs while everyone else sat about and done nothing but talk about the waitresses. But hey, I guess you would be happy to do work that you were NOT contractually hired to do and be paid for.

As for the previous poster, I didn't intended any disrespect toward your previous achievements. I also worked before the last job I have just quitted, I ain't the lazy you might think I am. It is just that my studies are quite expensive, and because of them, few people want to hire me because I ain't capable of giving full-time. I have worked for wal-mart the last summer. I was doing 50 hours week, and when university started back, they kicked me out, siomply telling me they needed someone with more time to give them. It's the story of my minimum wage career : I get a job during summer, when school start back, I get kicked out. And when I start looking for a job during school, I ain't capable of giving full-time so people just don't hire me. Been like that since 2006. So in a way, the only thing that is really stopping me from making money is my studies, and seriously, should I stop going to university to find a work in a factory or warehouse to make money ? The reason why I still live with my parents are the same. I have to choose : get a job and get my own place, money and stuff, or study and stay with them, and work when someone accept me for summer. I ain't that easy as a choice, but I decided to go to university like that I could do a job I really like.

As far as this thread is going, I think I have offended to many people. Could someone please close/block this thread ?

Don't worry about what other people tell you. Sounds to me like you made the right choice with that last employment. I wouldn't want to be hired to do a job and then find out I had to do everyone elses at the same time either.

What he was explaining was more than that. What he was explaining was an unethical practice at the place he worked. Why should workers be forced to do more than just their job and then also have to take on everybody elses responsibilites? And then of course they shout at him because he is unable to do the jobs of several people on his own and then people question him over why he quit? Get serious. I wouldn't put up with that crap either.

Erm no. Comprehension fail. He said those bosses showed him disrespect and that is tantamount to workplace bullying. Which is unethical and wrong. However please keep digging the hole further for yourself because I'm sure you'll be absolutely happy to work for an employer who makes you do everything that should take several people to do while they sit on their backside discussing the waitresses.

Unfortunately, that does kinda sound like the real world. At least from what I'm told. From my experience its about accurate.

Idiot boss. Check
Only one working, Check
Pointless job. Check
Hating life. Check
Nobody cares about the job. Check.

A full five stars.

Not that I can complain, I hated the jobs I've had so far, with one exception, and a lot of them are like that. The only real thing to do is to buckle down, swallow what decency you have, and get the money. I'm not saying sell yourself for money, if you get my drift, though that is kinda a similar premise isn't it?

Its rather pathetic that the 'entitlement' issue here seems to be a request for a decent job with decent people. Then again I'm only 21, what do I know?

Eye of Terra.

I feel for ya. It's tough out there and this isn't a cheap hobby.

Ebay is a decent option. So many people buy armies only to become disillusioned with their play and sell 'em off to buy the latest and greatest. Selling the miniatures at ridiculous prices. I picked up a few 1500 point armies for FWF's (Friends Without Funds) in my gaming group this way. Abuse these people... and reap a good harvest of miniatures.

A good gaming group is also a great resource. I know they're really hard to find, but worth the effort. Good friends are the best resource in this type of hobby in my experience.

I've found myself in a similar situation. I am employed but bills tend to eat up most of the money I have. Many previous posters are correct in saying that this hobby is not cheap by any means. However, don't let this stop you from playing! you can build up a decent 500 pt list and expand from there! Who cares if it isn't internet approved. It is your army. Ebay is a great resource and there is an excellent model stripping tutorial on this very site. Beyond that patience is an excellent trait to have. Buy what you can when you can. This game isn't going anywhere and it will still be here when you can afford to play it. See you on the field and for the Emprah!

I got mine from friends that quit, or from ebay. Minus the flaws with ebay stuff I usually just take apart the models anyway. Except if they are well painted like my razorback, (which I have incorporated as a primary color for their urban warfare forces)

I'm in the same situation you are. Little cash, but currently not going to school, i'm trying to get enrolled at a college for a chef's course. I am however currently working on 2 Warmahorde armies. Both are gonna be 35 points.

Your best bet, unless GW get's their act together is buy second hand, you can buy tons of discounted NIB stuff on ebay. I think I will make a Dark Eldar or a Chaos Marine army when I reach satisfaction with my Warmahordes.

Personally, i have a good amount of store bought models to satisfy those kind of people. However, i largely buy from ebay and strip the paint. If im playing really unprofessional like with a good friend i might use a wellish made cardboard model, now thats cheap.

Well, let's take a moment to explain this :

Currently in Quebec, the High school drop out is kinda the typical kind of person you find. 2 on 3 people is a high school drop out. Plus, we have a load of immigrants. I am currently studying full time at university. Soooo. If 2 on 3 people is a high school drop out with no perspectives of future and we have a load of immigrants, why the hell would a business owner or a store hires me part time when there are thousands of guys just begin to have full time and that are ready to sell their soul to work for the rest of their lives at place like Wal-mart or Sears ? I had a job recently, at Barbie's Restaurant. But even then, I have a student loan to pay at Scotia Bank, plus the Gym (hey, ain't because I live in a shat hole country I must be a pile of crap physically). The reason why I was able to have a job as a dish washer was simple : universities are currently on their biggest strike ever against the government (the biggest strike ever in Quebec history) because our prime minister is an a-hole of the extreme right-wing (so this give me almost full-time liberties except for when I teach at a cegep near my house since I'm in an informal teaching program), and the current dish washer had just quit without warning the very same evening I applied to he place. I did 1 month, and after realizing my boss was an idiot, having being yelled at by these stupid Indians cooks (and yelling back), having being forced to do the job of almost everyone (since the boss is an idiot, he considered that a dish washer should also be the one to collect the plates from their dropping stations, to clean the whole kitchen area and even the one to help move things, rather than the boss boys), I realised I preferred to quit my job rather than being taken for a little piece of crap that was doing everyone job but yet looking with disregard since my job was ''dirty''. Hell, most of these people we're high school drop out, and they looked down on me like if I was some kind of third rate individual, while in actuality, I'm a university student with a general grade of A- . If this is the kinda hell I am supposed to endure to have a job, to hell with it.

Seriously, it was like being an Eldar surrounded by Orks who thought I was the dirty and stupid one.

I like you. Elitist misanthropist ftw.

But to be on topic, the cheapest sure way to start any army is via the starter set. But this also means that you're stuck to just two choices for a long time. Well, luckily for you, CSM is heavily rumored to be the next starter set army.
Starter set squads sell for 10$ on ebay versus say, $33 for a retail price squad. Your options are kinda limited since you only usually get 4-5 unique unit types in a set but they're often core units you can't really go without.
My best advice would be to wait until the next starter set comes out. It will be after the summer break though but hey, if you're a student, there's always other ways to occupy your time as you wait to have some of the most fun you've ever had in your life followed by the most fun things you've ever done in your life up to now.
